Student Work
June Play: "Kids in the House"
On a what should be an exciting field trip to the White House, five kids are bored. Their parent chaperones are trying to show them how much fun learning about the US Government can be, but the kids just aren't into it. They wander off from their distracted chaperones and end up in the Oval Office. Strangely, no one is around. The kids are in for the ultimate learning experience --from the ghosts of past politicians haunting the White House, the Capitol Building, and the Supreme Courthouse! From ghosts like George Washington, Ted Kennedy, and Thurgood Marshall, the students learn about the three branches of government and some famous men and women who served in them.
"Kid's in the House" was a fantastic hit! Students did a superb job teaching the audience about the US Government while making it an entertaining narrative. I have to say, this was my favorite play yet! Check out more pictures here.

Student Essays
Our last writing workshop project of the year was essay writing. Students learned how to write thesis statements that got at exactly what they wanted to say and then find support for their claims through interviews, personal stories, and research. Essay writing helped many students strengthen their voices and gave them an opportunity to write about an issue they felt strongly about. I hope you enjoy them!
Info Expo Reports
In this engaging report writing project, each student came up with a genuine question about science, math, technology, or society and researched the answer. They each wrote a report of their findings, organizing the information into headings and focusing on clear, easy to follow language. We hope you like (and learn from) our reports!
American Revolution Tavern Project
To recreate life of Revolutionary America in the classroom, student tavern groups work together to complete projects on the causes of the revolution, the revolutionary heroes, the important battles, and the meaning of the revolution. They compete for "Revolutionary Dollars" by producing high quality projects, demonstrating knowledge, wearing colonial attire, and using proper language and courtesy. Check out their work here.
Invention Convention
For this project, students became inventors! They brainstormed ideas to improve the lives of others and tried to create something new and useful that they think people would need and want. They created a prototype, promotional materials, and either an instruction manual or a customer satisfaction poem.
Student Narrative Writing from January
Check out students' second personal narratives. We worked hard on more refined writing concepts, such as bringing forth the internal story, focusing on a message or theme, and elaborating on the important parts. Hope you enjoy!
Persuasion: The Art of Getting Want You Want
In this fun homework project, students had to think of something outrageous they wanted from their parents and persuade them to get it. Students asked for almost anything, from a floating house (Sam) to a personal training from a professional hockey player (Jared). Check out some of the students' work here!
Exploring the Explorers
Here you'll find work from students' research on the European Explorers. Groups of students researched an explorer, created a wall display with a portrait, map, and illustrated highlights of the journey, and presented an interview to the class.
Explorers covered: Vasco da Gama, Ferdinand Magellan, Vasco Nunez de Balboa, Juan Ponce de Leon, and John Cabot.

December Class Play: "Game Over"
Santa's elves are overworked. They desperately need a vacation, but production for next year's Christmas toys is already in full swing. All those kids asking for so much from Santa --if only there weren't so many kids then the elves wouldn't have to make as many toys and could have some time off. Four devious elves have a plan. They create a videogame so addicting it will suck kids in --literally!
Students put on a fantastic production filled with their own set design, costumes, plot, characters, music, sound effects, background slides, and more. Check out some pictures of the production here!

Native American Project
Here you'll find work from our in-class project as well as our homework project on the Native Americans. Students researched a Native North American tribe. They created an informative magazine on their tribe, they wrote informational paragraphs on one aspect of their tribe, they wrote imaginative stories from the perspective of a tribe member, they created dioramas of their tribe's environment, and they presented an entertaining pitch to the class on the greatness of their tribe. Bravo students!
Student Personal Narrative Writing from November
Check out students' first published story about their own personal experiences. We focused on writing about small moments, writing in a step-by-step way, zooming in on the most important parts, and including true and exact details from the "movie in your mind".
A Week in the News
Check out student work from the A Week in the News homework project. Students had to read the news, summarize an interesting article, create a poster representing the news for the week, and write a song about an amusing article.
What If...?
Check out student work from the What If...? homework project. Students had to choose a story premise from a list of outrageous ideas and then envision what would happen by writing a story and creating a piece of artwork.
Perfect World
Cooperative groups of students answer the question: "What would a perfect world be like for you?" In this opening project, designed their Perfect Worlds by creating maps, laws, anthems, stories, and presentations. Click the image to check out more!
