What If...?
Check out student work from the What If...? homework project. Students had to choose a story premise from a list of outrageous ideas and then envision what would happen by writing a story and creating a piece of artwork. October 2012
If Sammy Could Talk by Paige
From the "What If..?" Homework Project, Oct 2012
If my cat Sammy could talk the first thing I would do I’d scream so loud until my lungs wore out. Once I’d settled down I’d probably mutter “y-you t-talk”? I can picture her having an old British accent. I know the first thing she would ask for – A nice long scratch behind the ear. Then maybe pat her back for a little while. Once I got used to the fact that my cat could talk I would probably get her a booster seat or high chair so she could eat with me. When I got home from school I would eat my snack and have a nice long conversation with her. What I would find really useful would be if she could communicate with the other animals and tell them what I was saying to them and what they were saying back to me. Since my cat is pretty much in her hundreds I would get her a baby walker since she is obviously too small to get a real old lady one.
When we went on vacation I could just dress her up as a toddler and make her say a few words to convince the security that she is not a cat. I would only dress her up because of the extra fee you get when you bring an animal on the plane. It’s a lot of money and I’m pretty cheap. Maybe I would even try to train her to go to the bathroom on the toilet and flush. If she was not smart I would have to school her but hopefully she is smart. On vacation I would take her to the beach to play in the sand but not the water because, of course, most cats hate water. Maybe if I go to Disney Land in California Sammy and I could ride the tea cups, nothing too extreme, since she is old.
We are probably going to go to Turks and Caicos again so I will promise Sammy that we will not get another dog there. Rocky is from Turks and Caicos and Sammy is not a big fan of him. I would also ask her how she eats that smelly, wet, mushy cat food and somehow she seems like she’s enjoying it. I really hope she is pretending. Now that she could communicate with us and the animals one funny thing I would ask her is to ask Lily, my kitten, why she drools on the blanket. That is what I would do if my cat Sammy would talk.

My Day in Minecraft by Owen
From the "What If..?" Homework Project, Oct 2012
One sunny Saturday morning I woke up suddenly and looked at the clock. It was 5:00. Then I peeped out the door and saw my dad snoring in his bed. I closed the door and snuck downstairs and peered into the office. I jumped on the computer and logged into Minecraft but then something strange happened. The computer started to shake and gleaming spirals appeared on the screen. It looked kind of like one of those weird voodoo things! Then, suddenly, a long arm reached out and I knew exactly who it was. It was…Herobrine!
He grabbed my arm and pulled me into the computer! The shock was intense. So intense, I blacked out, and when I woke up I was in a cell in a dungeon. I thought I was trapped forever but then something strange happened. I found I had enough strength to literally punch a hole in the cell! I ducked under the roof and found myself in a long hallway.
“This must be Herobrine’s castle,” I thought to myself. There must be a way out. I checked hundreds of different doors but none of them went outside. Then finally I found the right door. I ran outside and jumped into a mine (which I believe gave Minecraft its name) and drove away on a mine cart. After the ride I settled in a large cavern and fell asleep.
When I awoke I was astonished. I was behind a defendant’s desk in a court martial! Then I heard the judge speak, “Will the lawyer of the defendant Eckert-JOE please stand up?” Then who I assumed to be my lawyer stood up, and as soon as he stood up I felt my stomach tingling. Then suddenly I plopped right in my seat in the office just in time for breakfast.

What If...? by Audrey

What if my stuffed animals and toys partied through the night? Well they do so let me tell you about it. You see they do things differently depending on the season or weather. On warm nights or in the summer they’re outside dancing, eating and rocking out all through the night, and in the winter they’re inside, in the warm and cozy basement.
Every summer night my stuffed animals and toys have fun. In the corner of the yard there’s a food and drinks table with chips and soda. Winding through every tree in the yard there are flowery garlands tied from branch to branch with Chinese lanterns hanging from them. This makes the yard look like a big Christmas tree with lots of Christmas lights on it. In the middle of the yard there are lots of speakers blaring out “Call me maybe” and “Moves like Jagger”with a stuffed animal named Blackie as the DJ. At the bottom of the yard near the patio you’ll find Bengie grilling hot dogs and hamburgers. Down near the driveway there’s a blow-up pool for the toys and stuffed animals to swim in, if they wanted to. If they did, then the toy firefighters would drag the hose to the pool and they would fill it up. That’s what my stuffed animals and toys do in the summer, but here’s the winter story.
In the winter all the toys and stuffed animals go down to the basement to hang out and have fun. They turn on the TV and they watch Qubo, PBS, Disney Channel, Nickelodeon and the Amazing Race. The music is turned up by Lily and the Lego people bring the dollhouse so they can play in it because it is a life size mansion to them. That’s what my stuffed animals and toys do in the winter.
That’s what my stuffed animals and toys do every night, they socialize and have fun.
