 It's our last 3 school days of the year!
I hope students had a good year filled with fun, creativity, challenge, and lots of learning! Here is the plan for this last week: Monday: We'll work all day on creating a mini play that teaches an audience about the three branches of government and what they do. Students who have worked hard all year will have first choice on their roles. We'll pull together a small set design, some sound effects, and a PowerPoint background. We'll write our lines, make costumes, and rehearse. It's a lot to accomplish in one day, but we'll go for it anyway! Monday after school: Motivated and hard working students can stay after to help with production of the mini play. Pick up is at 4:00pm at the usual dismissal location. Tuesday: We'll rehearse our mini play. At 1:00pm we will perform it for an audience. You're invited! It will be about 30-45 minutes. We hope you can make it. Wednesday: The last day of school. We'll be cleaning out our desks and lockers, compiling the last items to put in our portfolios, and reflecting on the entire school year. We will have a class party after all of that work is done. Students can bring snacks, electronics, and games. If we are able to raise money, we may even go to CB Scoops for ice cream. Dismissal is at noon. It was a pleasure and honor to teach these students. I hope everyone has a fantastic summer!  Here's the plan for this fun-filled week: Activities Tuesday: 5th Grade Canobie Lake Park Field Trip in Salem, NH. Bring your courage and a strong stomach! Those roller coasters aren't going to ride themselves. Wednesday: 5th Grade Graduation Ceremony at 6:00pm followed by the 5th Grade Party. Friday: Brooks School Field Day. Academics With all of those activities, to work around, we've got a tight schedule this week. But here's what we'll focus on academically: Social Studies: We continue learning about the US Government. We'll be holding a mock Congress in class where students will run for the House of Representatives or the Senate, the rest of the class will vote, then students will learn what it's like to try to pass a bill and make it a law. We'll then learn more about the executive branch and what the president can and can't do. Then we'll learn about the judicial branch and hold a mock trial with the Supreme Court. Should be fun! After we learn how the three branches of government work, we'll then come up with a mini play to teach an audience about what we learned. For the remainder of the week we'll be rehearsing the mini play and create a small set design (like a scaled down version of our class play in December). On the last week of school, we'll present our play during the day, most likely on Tuesday, June 24 in the afternoon. Parents are welcome to attend! Math: We'll finish the year reviewing fraction addition, subtraction, and multiplication to make sure students are ready for middle school. Reading: We finish with our book groups this week. Students will discuss the endings of the books as a group and what the overall message is. Writing: Students are finishing up publishing their personal narratives, which we'll be posting online for your enjoyment. That's the very general plan for the week!  Highlights from Last Week: The Egg Drop Challenge was a ton of fun! Students watched as Mr. Allen threw their egg protection devices off the top of the school. We discussed the design successes and flaws afterward. During math, students took part in the Volume Challenge, a workshop I created where students measure the volume of a variety of rectangular prisms, like a crayon box or an aluminum foil box, using centimeter cubes. It was a great way to make math hands on. Reading: We'll be spending a lot of time in our Book Groups this week. Students continue to analyze the stories, discuss changes in characters, make inferences, and make sense of all the story components. We sure have had some lively discussions! We also finish our project on Animals. Students will present their posters to the class and we'll vote for our favorite. Some groups even have a skit to present to the class. Writing: We'll be publishing our personal narratives this week. Students focused on writing with lots of detail and figurative language. Students will also work more on their animal poems that they wrote for the Animal project. Math: We finish up with volume concepts and have a review of the year in math. Social Studies: This week we begin our study of the US Government. Students will be learning about the Constitution, the Bill of Rights, and the three branches of government through reading and fun videos. We'll then begin our last in-class project on teaching an audience about the US Government in a fun, engaging way. We'll hopefully be able to present that to parents during the last week of school.
