Plans Week of March 3, 2014

Field Trip: Thursday, March 6:
Commonwealth Museum
We'll be launching our study of the American Revolution with a visit to this excellent museum full of historical treasures, an immersive state timeline, and an interactive demonstration of the Boston Massacre. One or two chaperones needed. Email me if you are available.

Here is the plan for the week:

Reading: As part of our Early American Colonies project, we'll continue our related reading and research, learning how to integrate information from multiple texts and summarize.

Writing: We'll continue working on writing our Survival Guide for the colonies and how to incorporate specific examples to support main ideas.

Math: We'll finish up learning about decimal division and take an assessment on decimal multiplication and division either Wednesday or Friday. Here is what students are expected to demonstrate:

1. Multiply decimals by powers of ten (page 163)
   
2. Estimate the product of two decimals 
   
3. Draw diagrams with base-10 blocks or 100ths grids to model decimal multiplication (page 167, 185)
   
4. Multiply decimals by whole numbers and other decimals (page 171, 189, 193)
   
5. Place the decimal in the product correctly based on your estimate or on the number of decimals in your factors (see above)
   
6. Divide decimals by powers of ten (page 203)
   
7. Estimate the quotient of two decimals (page 211)
   
8. Recognize correct models of decimal division (page 207, 220)
   
9. Divide decimals by whole numbers and other decimals (page 215, 221, 225)
   
10. Add zeros to the dividend in order to get a quotient without a remainder (page 229)
    
11. Place the decimal in the quotient based on your estimate or on the number of decimals in your dividend compared to your divisor (see above)

In-Class Project: American Colonies

We'll be finishing our project on the early American colonies. Here is what we still need to accomplish:

• Research one of the 13 American colonies
  
• Create an informational poster that includes a map, important dates and historical figures, and special features of the colony
  
• Create a Survival Guide for living in the colonies.

Students will be working in cooperative groups and will be graded on: Amount of information, research quality, creativity, presentation quality, and teamwork.
