Review of Last Week: Last week was a lot of fun. We have a wonderful new student, Samantha. She's from the Columbus and has been working hard and making friends. Welcome Samantha! We've also got new pods: The Mysterious Mondays: Gavin, Marisabel, Izzy, Olivia, and Almir. The Tootie Taco Tuesdays: Pete, Jade, Anna, and Chase. The Waffle Monster Working Wednesdays: Aidan, Savvy, Gabe, and Jenna. The Thrift Shop Thursdays: Fitzy, Josh, Rose, Ricky, and The Fun French Fry Fridays: Ben, Stefan, Samantha, Maya, and Lauren. Students wrote and illustrated step-by-step directions for a task, such as making a sandwich or cleaning your room. I'll be posting some highlighted work on the Student Work page. To the right you can see we had a writing share session. Gavin, Fitzy, Josh, Anna, and Leah volunteered to share their instructions. Great job guys! We had a trivia game on Friday based on our reading about explorers, particularly Ferdinand Magellan. The Tootie Taco Tuesdays and the Fun French Fry Friday's tied for first. In math we've learned how to determine the value of, how to compare, and how to round decimals. We didn't get to adding them yet. Here's the plan for this week: Reading: Informational Reading. We will continue reading about European explorers in A History of Us by Joy Hakim. We'll learn how to quote from a text accurately when explaining it's meaning, how to draw inferences, and how to summarize informational text. Writing: Informational Writing. We'll continue learning how to compare and contrast characters, real people, and historical figures. We'll use Venn diagrams as an outline. We'll focus on analyzing character traits, using specific examples, and transitional words and phrases. Math: We'll learn how to add and subtract decimals using models as well as simply lining up the decimals on paper. We'll also learn how to estimate sums and differences of decimals.
