Dear Students,

Has there ever been a character in your reading that you love to hate? You know, a character that gets you mad or frustrated, but in a way that makes the story more interesting to read? Often, characters that we "love to hate" are mean, selfish, and try to do harm to the main character.

You may have heard these terms before: protagonist and antagonist. The protagonist is the main character that you cheer for throughout the story. The antagonist is the character who is an active "pain in the butt" to the main character. There is usually more than one protagonist and antagonist in a story. The antagonist often brings harm to the world of the story. In some stories, the antagonist can change his or her ways and learn a lesson. In other stories, the antagonist is pure evil and must be defeated.

This Week's Prompt:

Describe an antagonist in a story that you have read. What are some of his or her character traits? What does this character do to cause trouble in the story?

Also, try to answer this: Why do you think the author chose to have this character act the way he or she does?

Dear Class,

In the book Schooled by Gordan Korman, the character Zach is the antagonist. He thinks he is better than everyone else and is considered "popular." It's sad because he uses his popularity to bully people. I think the author had Zach act the way he does so Cap's life at C average Middle School is that much harder. Without this character the story might be boring and less entertaining.

It is a tradition at Zach's middle school to nominate the most unpopular student for eighth grade president each year. During Zach's eighth grade year he nominates Cap to be the president. Cap lived in a commune all his life with his Grandmother and has never been introduced to the new world. Basically Zach and his "gang" just prank Cap and trick him all the time.

I think Zach acted the way he did because he wanted to retain his reputation. He didn't want other kids thinking they were better than him and could stand up to him.

I try to avoid people like Zach, but I do remember some people in high school who were extremely concerned about their reputations. I've never met anyone who would lead such a terrible scheme to humiliate a person as Zach did to Cap. I hope you never meet anyone like that either!

Even when Zach is around his friends, he acts like the leader of the "gang". Also, he is one of those people who has "followers" instead of friends.

When Zach uses is popularity to bully people does his friends think that he is mean and don't hang out with him or do they cheer him on? since Cap is getting bullied. Will he fight back? If Cap is not there them how do you think the story would unfold? You did a great job!

The antagonist Jackson, "Braceface", is like the popularity king. Everyone loves him. Everyone adores him. Teachers give him good grades just because he's popular. He believes that a lot of people, such as people with glasses, people with inhalers, people with problems and stuff are nerds and weirdos. Everything was going great until he went to the dentist.
The dentist said that Jackson had sixty-four teeth, thirty-two on the top and thirty-two on the bottom. The dentist said some were sideways, some were crooked, some were upside-down, and he put braces into Jackson's mouth. To Jackson's surprise, he found out they were highly magnetic. A fork would just get stuck to his mouth, so he got plastic forks. When Jackson got back to school his popularity disappeared, because now people thought he was a nerd.
After 200 pages he figures out he was judging people by what they look like and not what they are inside. I have not got past that, but I think that Jackson will become the protagonist and not the antagonist.

Based on your excellently detailed description, Jackson doesn't sound like a bad guy at all! He actually seems like a very likable character. From what I understand of N.E.R.D.S, Jackson is a main character. Main characters are the protagonists. Protagonists can have faults and bad traits, too, even though they are the characters we side with. Rarely do antagonists switch to being protagonists in a story.

Does Jackson have an enemy? You know, some evil-doer he is trying to stop? That would be the antagonist.

Dear Class, the antagonist in my story is the goddess Gaea. She is the goddess of Earth. Gaea traits include sleeping and talking at the same time,(not sleep-talking!)which is really weird because Percy is basically going against the Earth itself. Since Juno,(another goddess) erased Percy's memory, Gaea thinks that if his memory is erased, she can inspire Percy to be on her side. I think the author made this character act this way is because it would make it more exciting. How? Well, you can be worried when the main character goes on the bad side. Everybody would be tensed up right? That's why the author made the character act this way.

I'm a little bit confused. So you say Gaea, the goddess of the earth, is Percy's enemy. How is she "bad"? You said she sleeps and talks at the same time, but those traits don't seem like bad traits. Being selfish, getting angry easily, wanting revenge, being greedy --those are bad traits. What is she trying to accomplish that is so evil? To be an antagonist, you have to be an enemy.

There have been so many books when I hate a character, but he makes the story so much more interesting. But today, I'm going to talk about Four. In the story Four, I hate Eric so much because he is selfish and just plain annoying. I think he is annoying because he always insults Four when he doesn't have to. He also doesn't like anybody else. That is why I hate Eric so much.

Just because you hate a character and think he's annoying, doesn't make him an antagonist. The antagonist tries to oppose the main character. Antagonists are enemies of the main character. How does Eric act like an enemy to Four? What does he do to cause trouble?

Eric try's to sabotage Fours life by either making him look bad in front of the leaders, he also insults Four. That results in them being mortal enemies.

Dear Ms.Kimball,
I read the book the Red Pyramid in the Kane Chronicles series by Rick Riordan. One of the antagonists in my story was an evil god named Set. He has an army of evil demons and is trying to destroy the world. Some of the things that Set does, a lot of the time is if one of his demons disagrees with him, he dissolves them into dust. He soon hopes to take over the world, but not if the heroes Carter and Sadie can stop him!

Yikes! Set sounds pretty evil. He is definitely a strong antagonist! I can't believe he even turns his minions into dust if they disagree with him. He has very little tolerance for dissent (great vocabulary word!).

Why does he want to destroy the world? There has to be a reason!

Dear Ms. Kimball,
The antagonist I chose to write about is Julian from the book Wonder by J.B.. You never really get to know a lot about Julian; he’s a mysterious character. But the author did just come out with a new version of the book where there’s a chapter at the end of the of the book on Julian. The few things you can infer, get, and prove from the chapters Julian’s in are that he bullies,lies, pranks and backtalks. I didn’t read the improved version of the book yet, but you never know, maybe Julian has a really sad background story or has had a horrid life ever since his young childhood. I know these are some crazy inferences but the author wants you intrigued and wondering about his story. Adding Julian into the book definitely flared it up and grasps you into the book, so putting Julian in the story was a good choice. For all I know, Julian could actually be a good kid and just have a hard past. Keep getting inspired!!!

Julian was definitely a character I loved to hate, and I agree, his motives were pretty mysterious. I always wondered how someone could be so mean. You may be right that he has a sad backstory that we don't know about (unless we read the extra chapter). If Julian wasn't in the story, it wouldn't be as powerful, I agree. What do you think was the worst act that Julian did?

Dear Ms. Kimball,
I read your responce and most likely the most menacing thing Julian has ever done is not by him, but one of his parents. Julian and his parents are both related, but yet the mean streak runs in him and his mom. When the class got the picture day photo back Julians mom decided to make edited copies of the class picture. A.K.A. photo shopping. When August finds out it's as if he just took a bullet to the heart He feels like a prisoner who's given up trying to escape the dreadful shaded lonelyness of his feelings. Luckily at the end August finds the right friendly group of friends. Even though for the longest time he felt shaded he learned to search for the light and keep trying.

In the book Where The Mountain Meets The Moon there is a character named Magistrate. He didn’t have any influence on Minis life in the book. Minli heard tales and legends about how greedy, unhappy and selfish the Magistrate was. Minli was very interested in all the tales that her father Ba told about the Magistrate. When Minli went on all of her journeys to get to the old Man of the Moon She heard many stories about the Magistrate I think all the stories that she was told were all vicious things that the Magistrate did. I think that Minli agrees with me on how the Magistrate is so mean! This is why I think that The Magistrate is a antagonist.

I agree that the Magistrate is the antagonist but I have to disagree that he didn't have an effect on Minli's life. The Magistrate did so many bad things and affected the lives of the characters that Minli encountered. Minli had to solve many of the problems that the Magistrate created for them. He was definitely greedy and selfish, for sure! What do you think is the worst thing that the Magistrate did?

I just started my MCBA book so I'm going to write about my book group book. Because of Mr.Terupt. One character that I don'y like in this book is Luke. I don't like Luke because in every one of his chapters he says (Dollar Word.) This annoys me so much because that project was in the beginning of the book. So Luke let it go.

Dear Amy,

Just because you don't like a character, it doesn't mean that they are an antagonist. An antagonist is someone who causes trouble for the main character. Because of Mr. Terupt is a difficult book because it has many main characters. Howeber, Luke is considered a main character and a protagonist.

Antagonists have many negative traits. They can be greedy, selfish, angry, hateful, mean, etc. In books about school, they are often the bullies. Here's a hint to the antagonists in Mr. Terupt: There are two main antagonists and readers get to see things from their perspectives.

We all know that Luke doesn't like trouble but, when the special day comes and they go outside. It wasn't only Peter's fault for throwing that snowball, It was everyones. One reason why it was Luke's fault is because he got peter angry by pushing him into the snow. That caused Peter to throw the snowball. I know that Luke didn't mean to hurt Mr. Terupt, or anyone. I understand that Luke didn't mean to put his teacher in the hospital. It was an accident, This is the only bad thing I can think of. Luke is not someone that would try to hurt anyone.

In Schooled, Hugh Winkleman is the antagonist and tries to make Cap unpopular, and tries to make Cap the center of bullying because if not, Hugh will be the "dorkiest" in the grade, and Hugh would be bullied. Hugh was once Cap's only friend, but in one chapter Hugh says "Not only could he be a hero, he had to be a heartthrob, too. I was done with this guy." And turned his back on Cap. Even in the end of Schooled, we never really find out if Hugh will be friends with cap again.

It's funny, at the beginning of Schooled, I thought Hugh was going to be a protagonist. Zach stood out as the main antagonist in the story, as Julia said above. However, I agree, Hugh does become an antagonist, which I found intriguing. The quote you chose does a good job of showing how Hugh turned against Cap and betrayed his trust. What do you think happens to Hugh after the book finishes?

In my opinion, almost anything could happen to Hugh. After he did something so unexpected to Cap, betrayed him, I don't have any guess as to what he'll do next. I think the author wrote Hugh to mess with reader's predictions in the book.

Hello Class,

I have always liked the antagonists in a story. But one character called Zach, from Schooled, is particularly special. When Zach attempts to bully Cap, Cap back-fires without meaning to. Cap becomes popular and Zach is looked down on by all the other kids. Zach tries to reclaim “his year”, But of course, this is a “happy-ever-after” book so, he fails. I find he is my most recent favorite antagonists. Zach is also, your casual middle schooler. (Well, casual for “C- Average”)

That is a character that is a “pain in the butt” to Cap (the main character)

In the book Because of Mr.Terupt, there is a really mean character named Alexia. I really like reading about Alexia in the story, but she is really mean to all of the other characters. Alexia acts like she’s the popular girl out of all the characters, but the truth is nobody likes Alexia. Alexia always says “like” in every sentence she says. Alexia causes some trouble in the book. She calls everybody mean names. Alexia also bosses everybody around in the story.

In the book Alexia was trying to tell Jessica who she could be friends with. Alexia was pushing Jessica who she could and couldn't be friends with. Also one time when Alexia was in a group doing a class project, she was bossing everybody around on what to do. Alexia bullied them because she use to be bullied and she never let that happen again, so she bullied other people to they couldn't bully her back. I hope that answers your questions.

I read the book Every Soul a Star by Wendy Mass. Bree and Ally's parents are all antagonists. Right now I am going to focus on Bree's parents. Bree's parents are sort of in their own world all of the time. Also, they don't even think about Bree and her life -only about themselves.
I think that Wendy Mass put them in the book because without them the book would be really boring and none of what happened in the book would have happened without Bree's parents.

A time that Bree's parents were agonists was when they told Bree and her sister that they were moving 3 days before they moved. That was the main time that they were agonists. They were agonists at other times too. But I'm really interested in the book that I am reading so I'm going to stop writing here.

In Taken I think the antagonist is Frank, because you hate what he did to all the people in the experiments, and what he plans to do when he has his army. Also the fact that he made an innocent man pay for something he did.

Dear Talia and Ms.Kimball,
Frank put people in experiments that he is "Shutting down" but really is making sure they keep going. He is doing this because he believes that he can create an army, so instead of only dictating part of the world he can get the East or West also (I forget). The thing is people got mad about the experiments and said that whoever started them should pay, and Frank did need to get revenge on someone named Harvey (I forget why), so he told everyone in his lame excuse for a country that Harvey was in charge of the experiments. The thing is every one in the country is poor and needs a ton more money and they think if they find Harvey they will get that money.

I read the book called, "Peter Pan" adapted by Eugene Bradley Coco. In this story, the antagonist was the evil Captain Hook, who was a really wicked and nasty pirate. At first, he kidnapped Indian Chief's daughter. Later he captured Tinker Bell, the Darlings, and the lost boys, and took them to the pirate ship. I think the reason why the author described Captain hook a very bad villain was to make Peter Pan look very brave.

What you said about Captain Hook making Peter Pan look brave makes lots of sense. I like how you used evidence from the book to explain how Captain Hook was the agonist. Have you finished the book yet? It seems like an interesting book from the way that you explained it(or at least Captain Hook and what he does).

Dear Amy,

Thanks! Peter Pan raced out to sea to rescue his friends who were captured by Captain Hook. Then Peter challenged Captain Hook to duel. Peter was so quick and brave that the nsty pirate fell into the water and he was chased by a ferocious crocodile.

Have you ever seen a movie about Peter Pan? There are so many of them out there, some old, some newer. One of my favorites is called "Hook" with Robin Williams in it.

In my book titled " The Lions of Little Rock" an antagonist in my story is named Sally. Sally is a big part in this story and the reason I love hating her is because she is always trying to harm the main character in any way possible. The reason for this is because she does not want Liz, the new girl, to become friends with Marlee, the main character. I think the reason the author described Sally as a mean character is to show how tough Marlee has to be.

Sally was mean to Marlee by embarrassing her multiple times in class and telling other kids facts that aren't true. She knows Marlee has no friends, this means Sally can do what ever she wants to Marlee and Marlee will still be her friend.Another way Sally is mean to Marlee is because once the school found out Liz had dark skin and banned her from school, Sally kept on making fun of Liz to Marlee knowing they are very close friends, or should I say were. These are just some of the ways Sally bullied her.

In The Trouble With Rules Owen is the antagonist. He is a joker and prankster who can take things WAY too far. He pikes fights with the new girl summer and they end up having a “who can be the grossest” competition. After Owen teases Summer the narrator Nadie ends up COVERED IN ROTTEN POTATOES. He never says sorry for any of his antics and something bad ALWAYS happens. If you want to know more about Owen in The Trouble With Rules!

Dear Ms.Kimball
Owen was involved with the rotten potatoes because they noticed a bad smell in the classroom. And it turned out to be Nadies food for her bug. Summer earlier in the story had a really gross lunch so Owen teased her that it was her lunch. He swung the bag back and forth and eventually it broke and splatted all over Nadie. Summer tries to stop the who can be the grossest competition but it backfires. And they pretty much just have to go along with Owens antics because they know they cant stop him.

Dear Ms. Kimball,
In the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series the antagonist is the main character, Greg. When Greg causes trouble, it is because of his personality sometimes. For example, he doesn't like to do work and is lazy. This leads to trouble. One time, he started a lawn-mowing business with his best friend, Rowley and he didn’t want to be the one who was actually mowing the lawns, so he made Rowley do it while he would count the money they made. Greg’s reason for this was if they were both mowing the lawns, when they went to count the money, the money would become all dirty and sweaty. Then, Rowley quit the lawn-mowing business and that left Greg all by himself to mow the lawns.

I thought that Greg was the main character in Diary of a Wimpy Kid? The main character can't be the antagonist. Even though Greg causes trouble for other characters in the story, he is still the protagonist --the main character. Isn't his brother Rodrick an antagonist? An antagonist is a character who tries to cause trouble for the main character, even if the main character make a lot of his own trouble.

Hi class,
Someone I love to hate is Luxa from Gregor The Overlander by Suzanne Collins. I love to hate her because inhte beginning of the book she is making fun of Gregor and Boots (gregor's little sister). Then she tells them that there is no hope to get home EVER. And after that she doesn't want to do anything with them. Even if they are the OVERLANDERS, which are very high up in hte royalty chain in the UNDERLAND. That is why I love to hate Luxa.

Is Luxa an antagonist? I couldn't tell from your description. Just because you hate a character, it doesn't make that character an antagonist. An antagonist is usually "the bad guy" (or girl). Who is Gregor's enemy throughout the book? He is trying to rescue his father, right? So who is he trying to rescue him from?

Rodrick is an antagonist for Greg, but Greg is an antagonist for other characters in the series, such as his friend Rowley. But if Greg weren't the main character in the series, I think he would be the antagonist.
