Last week, most of you wrote about a book you feel everyone should read by fifth grade. Some student still haven't responded, unfortunately. Nevertheless, we have a great list of books for you to consider:

Dear Class,

I read the first few chapters of The Lions of Little Rock, and agree that this is a must read book. The author gets right to the point, and doesn't spend to much time introducing the story, which I apreciate. I like the style of writing the author uses, and I like the overall plot of the book.

You said, "The author gets right to the point, and doesn't spend to much time introducing the story." What point does the author get to so quickly? Why do you think that's a good thing?

Also, do you have a sample or description of the style of writing the author uses that you like? Sounds like it's a fabulous book... I want to know more about it!

I agree that the author doesn't spend much time introducing the story. I like it because it gets right to the story, but it's hard at some points because I feel like I may have missed something. Do you feel that way?

I read the story The Happy Prince by Oscar Wilde. I do think that it is a must-read book. The story definately pulled me in. I was looking for the story online and found it. After I got to it, I looked at it to see how long it was. While looking I was scanning the story. I ended up just reading it. It was a really great story. I think that the story is appropriate for ages 8-11 readers. The thing is, I don't really know what reading level I think that it's at. The story is short, wich is good for younger readers, but the point of the story I think is a little more advanced.

I think that the point of the story was that the Swallow and the Happy prince did good and sacrificed a lot for others, so they got good in return. The story did teach the readers a lesson. The lesson is that if you do good than you will feel good and you should do good.

Dear Ms.Kimball
The book I chose was Operation Redwood. I read a chapter and thought it was alright.
Julian, the main character, was a kid who's life wasn't good. His dad died, and he doesn't see his mom much. No one likes him, and his uncle hates him. While in his Uncle Sibley's office, he see's a mysterious E-mail with his name on it. finally, I am curious to see what happens next. This was on page six. in most books I read the exciting part starts on at least page 4. So I feel the book is a little bit boring and I would not recommend it as a must read.
I feel its appropriate for ages 8-11. I would read the book for pleasure in third grade. Now that I'm in fifth grade, I feel there are better books to read than this.

I feel that if you read books that have exciting parts by page 4, the author is rushing the book. In my opinion, in a good book within 4 pages you have just been introduced to the setting of the story.

I've heard a lot about this book and just your short summary dragged me in wanting to know more. What is this mysterious email, why does his uncle hate him, how did his dad die, why doesn't he see his mom much? I think this book is definitely a must read.

Dear Danny,

Reading only the first chapter is not enough to determine if a book is a must-read or not. That's why I asked students to read the first few chapters. Of course, everyone has different preferences as a reader, but I know that if I ditched books after only the first chapter, I would have missed out on some of my favorite stories.

I feel the same way about ‘The Cricket in Times Square’. I think it takes a little longer than usual to get to the point. Also, I think that the book would be a must read for a younger grade. For example, fourth or fifth grade. I am more attracted to a book that is a page turner right from the beginning.

Dear Ms. Kimball,
I read the first few chapters of Operation Redwood. I feel that this is a very good book and it makes me want to read more. I wouldn't say it was a must-read yet, just because I have not read the whole book and do not know how the rest of the story goes.
I like the book because it has a very important message. The author was trying to get across that it is important to take good care of the environment, and not take advantage of nature to use for things that we might not necessarily need.
Also, I think that this book is good because it has very funny and interesting characters. For example, Danny is very wild, but humorous and a very loyal friend to Julian. Robin seems that she knows what she wants and can fight for it. For example, she sent an email to Julian's uncle saying that how would he feel if someone came to his yard and started destroying it.

Great job including so much information about Operation Redwood in just a paragraph. You addressed a theme of the book as well as important character traits of the main characters. I am definitely intrigued by your summary to read the book myself. Have you ever read the book, Hoot, by Carl Hiaasen? It has a strong environmental theme and a fun, humorous tone throughout the story. Your description of Operation Redwood reminded me of it.

Dear class,

I have been reading ‘because of Mr. Terupt’ . I definitely agree that it is a MUST read. The story really pulled me in. I will likely finish the book when I finish the second book of warriors. I also think it is appropriate for 8-11. I think it is quite relative to ‘Schooled’ and is a nice jump around perspectives. For example, when Peter sees Anna crying, he thinks he's a weirdo. But when you see Anna’s perspective, you see she actually did not want to kill the plant.

So yes, I would rate this book a must read. I recommend It too.

I am so glad you loved Because of Mr. Terupt. I agree, jumping around in the different characters' perspectives is very enlightening. Not many stories allow you to explicitly understand the perspectives of other characters, particularly the antagonists (the baddies).

I totally agree that "Because of Mr. Terupt" is a must - read book. When I first read it in book groups, I thought it was the best book of all time, and to me, it still is. It is definitely a great book for ages 8 - 11. Great response!

I read the first couple of chapters in Operation Redwood, and from what I have read so far, this could be considered a must read book. For example, the author pulls you in right from the first sentance with stem "mysteries". Also, I can relate to Julian, the main character, because he wants to know a lot of information about certain things. Also, the author wrote the book so the book does not start in the middle of a situation, which I like, and thankfully, it does not take too long to figure out what is happening.

Overall, if I were to continue reading this book, I'm pretty sure that I would enjoy it very much. Therefore, I might just read more of it!

I'm glad you enjoyed the beginning of Operation Redwood. It's great when you can relate to the main character. It makes you feel like you're there in the action. From your description, it sounds like the author starts the story in the middle of something and you have to figure out what is going on. That can be a fun way to dive into the world of a book. I was curious, what did you mean when you wrote, "stem 'mysteries'"?

Dear Class,
The book I chose to "test read" is The Cricket in Times Square by George Selden. Ms. Kimball spelled Selden is not Seldon. Anyway, the reason I chose this book is because it has the newbery medal. And the illustration seemed cool. I think the book definitely deserved the newbery medal because the book is just amazing. It has a conversational and humorous tone. I like it that way. It makes the book more intriguing. Love the first few chapters. Only 10 pages and it's completely amazing. The "suspense" makes me want to read more. The "suspense" was what Mario was going to do with the dirty cricket. The cricket is the main guy because it has "cricket" in the title. In already 10 pages. The book pulls me in so much that this book is not going to my blog "test book." I'm going to start reading this book as my independent reading book. You should try this book too. There are tons of copies of this. Hope you enjoy this review!

I read the first couple of chapters in rules and I think this definitely is a book that everybody should read by fifth grade. The word per page are a small amount, it's a fun sort of fast read. I was laughing and admiring just the way the author described the first couple of chapters. I love this book.

I read the first bit book Inside Out And Back Again. And I have to say I love love love love love it so far. I couldn’t stop reading it last night. It is so beautiful, it wasn’t just the story that was beautiful it was the way the story was "shaped". It blended poem with story uniquely. I am not surprised people put it as there favourite because it is sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo amassing and just WOW. That story really touched my hart so thank you for recommending it to the class because again, WOW! Thank you.

I can tell how much you enjoyed Inside Out and Back Again. Isn't it a touching story written in such a unique style? Try to find another, more formal way of expressing your pleasure with the book instead of repeating "O"s in "so." That's the easy was to put emphasis on something. I want to challenge you!

Dear Class,

I read the first 4 chapters of the book called, “Wonder” by R. J. Palacio. I think it is a must-read book because it is a very interesting and moving story. This book pulled me in a lot, especially when I read the part of the farting nurse, I was laughing so much. I also think that this story is appropriate for readers ages from 8 to 11, because like I said above, the story is interesting, funny, touching, and the storyteller himself is a 5th grade boy.

I read the first two chapters of Divergent. I agree with Marc that Divergent is a must read by fifth grade even though I only just started. The author describes scenes very well, like when the author wrote, "a large metal sculpture that the Dauntless climb after school, daring each to go higher and higher". Also it raises a lot of questions. Who are the Dauntless? How are the factions different? Why didn't her brother answer her question?

Dear Class,
I chose the book Inside Out and Back Again by THANHHA LAI. I read the first few chapters of the book and I think this is not for a 5th grade or lower book level. I think that because some of the language in the book is really hard to understand and some of it is in Chinese witch might make it really confusing to someone who isn't in 5th grade. Another reason why I think this book isn't for 5th grade or younger is the plot line, because the plot line might be very confusing to a reader who is younger than in 5th grade. I personaly don't like this book because the plot line isn't fun and exciting that I like books to be. I think this book would be a really good for a 5th grader of 6th grader to read if they like that style of writing. And that's why I don't think this book is good for anyone who is in a younger grade than 5th grade.

You raise a really good point. Inside Out and Back again is probably more appropriate for 5th grade and older because of the language, the complex plot, and some of the concepts. Dear Class,

I read Divergent to see if I agreed that is was a 5th grade book. I think this book might be in some kids reading level but for others I might think it would be a little too confusing. For me I didn't think it was a 5th grade book because it is a little intense. The main character had to decide to either live with her family or abandon them. She also had to take a test in her mind and for some people it might be confusing what is going on at times. I got a little confused but I just processed what happened in the book and made sense of it. I think all kids could handle it when they are in late middle school maybe 6th grade. I do like the book and I don't think the words are too hard but I think it is just the topic and what happened in the story that makes it confusing.

You make some really good points about the age-appropriateness of Divergent. Many people recommend the book for ages 12 and older. You did a nice job explaining some of the complex concepts of the plot, such as the main character choosing to abandon her family. That's pretty intense for a younger kid to comprehend. Dear Class,
I chose to read warriors - into the wild by_____. It seems like a great competitor in the best fifth grade "must - read" book list. I was drawn into it by the authors great descriptions in the beginning, and all of the action that starts right away. I think it is a great book for fourth grade through fifth grade. It is long but easy to follow along with. I would even recommend this book (out of what I've read so far) to anyone who is looking for a great book to read.

I read the first chapter of the book ‘The Cricket in Times Square’ by George Seldon. I disagree that it is a must read book by fifth grade. I think this because after I read the first chapter, I felt it was mostly about the concept of the family being poor and it kept repeating that concept. The book never really pulled me in. I think that the book doesn't give you a hint about the problem that occur later in the story in the first chapter.

I would be happy to know why other people think it is a must read. In my opinion I think it is a good book, but not a must read book by fifth grade.

It's interesting to compare your reaction to A Cricket in Times Square to, say, Alec's, who really loved the book from the beginning. I think your opinion needs a little more support, however. Reading only the first chapter is not enough to get a good impression of a book. It's only 6 pages. I asked that students read at least the first few chapters before expressing their opinions of the books. Please do that and then update us on your response.

Dear Ms.Kimball,

I read the first two chapters and I still think that ‘A Cricket in Times Square’ is not a must read for 8-11 year olds. I still think that the book takes longer than usual to hint at the main problem or climax of the story. The reason I think this is because the first chapter is all about Mario and introducing him from Tucker Mouse’s point of view. Then the second chapter is about Mario hearing the cricket and Tucker meeting the cricket when Mario decides to keep the cricket at his magazine stand. The book still doesn’t give a hint of what the climax could be in the story. I know some people like books that take a little longer to hint at the main problem. However, I am not one of those people, I like to read books that will hint at the main problem closer to the beginning of the book.

I started reading Lions Of Little Rock and I agree that its a must read book. I think the author pulls you in on the first page. I also that the author did a good job of not going on and on but still stretched the tension. The plot is also a very interesting one and it really hooks in the reader. I'm defiantly going to finish Lions Of Little Rock and recommend it.

Dear class,
I chose to do, Wonder by R.J Palacio. I chose this book because I haven't read it yet and I know a lot of people have. In Rheona's response she says, "even though August had a deformed face, doesn't mean he had a deformed personality. This means that even though his face was not the most pleasant to look at, his personality and life style was no different than any other regular kid's." I could not agree with Rheona more. August may have a deformed face that doesn't mean he's different from everyone else. In chapter one August describes himself as ordinary. He says he hates it how his sister, Via, has to protect him all the time. He also mentions that his parents find him extraordinary. This book is a wonderful book and I so recommend it to anyone! My favorite part in Rheona's response was when she said, "even though August had a deformed face, doesn't mean he had a deformed personality." This story did pull me in because it doesn't start off like any other stories I've read. I do think it's appropriate for ages 8-11.

I chose to read a few chapters in operation redwood. I think when Julia recommended this book it was a great chose. I think this is an important message, to take care of the environment, and people within ages 8-11 should definatley know that. I definatly think it is a must read because not many other stories carry this important message. I also think it is a must read because all of the characters are so different and interesting. Robin is tough and is'nt afraid to stand up to Julian's uncle, whereas Danny and Julian never have the guts to do so.

Dear class,

I read a few chapters in Operation Redwood. I think whoever recommended the book did a good choice. There is a very important message in the book to take care of nature. It's a great book for kids that are 8-10 years old. I like it so far and I'm going to read more.

Dear Ms. Kimball,

I forgot to say that there are 3 main character, well, that's what I think. The first character is Julian, the son of the antagonist. Robin, a boy who can see evil in the antagonist. Danny, Julians best friend.
