The weather is getting nicer and we're spending more time outdoors. I don't know about you, but I find it one of the best times of the year to get into a good book. There's nothing I love more than devouring a book amid the beautiful outdoors, whether it's by a pond, on the beach, or just overlooking my backyard.

I bet many of you are reading some great books. Some of you may also be in need of some book suggestions. Let's hear about your independent reading books and see what everyone is interested in right now.

This Week's Prompt:

Tell us about your independent reading book this week. Summarize the story so far. Make sure you are clear on who the main characters are, what the setting of the story is, and what the plot of the story is.

Try using modifying clauses in your summary to add more detail and clarify who is who and what is what. Modifying clauses, which are separated by commas, help your writing become clearer and more specific. Use them!

Class,
My story is The Death Cure by James Dashner. Basically, this is what happens.
Thomas, the main character, wakes up in a white room. Completely white except for a almost stainless steel toilet and a brown rickety desk. And an impossible door to open. People give him food through the door by opening it by just a bit so he can't escape. After 2 weeks of this process, the door finally opens and a man that Thomas calls the Rat Man, walks towards the desk with a chair and a folder of thick and messy files. He then gives him a long speech about the Trials, the thing that he is in right now, and WICKED, an organization of the reamaining govenorments of the world combining forces. Rat Man ends his speech and escortes him out of the white room and Thomas took a shower. Thomas sees his friends and when the Rat Man wasn't looking, they ran away and the guards tried to get them but Thomas and his friends got the guard's weapons. They got to the Bergs, flying things basically, and flew to Denver. They got a message from somebody suprising, Gally. Gally is a bully Thomas faced but he was with Thomas's friends. Same group. Thomas and his friends got in a cab and drove to Gally.

That's the part where I stopped. That's my summary.

Wow! What an exciting and detailed summary! Excellent use of modifying clauses. I especially like how you used one in this sentence: "They got to the Bergs, flying things basically, and flew to Denver." I would have had no idea what Bergs were, and you seamlessly weaved a simple explanation into the summary.

I also like all of the vivid details you included, such as the "stainless steel toilet and a brown rickety desk." Although they make the summary longer, the details help me see the setting clearer. Most importantly, you got the big ideas across. Well done!

this felt like a quick well summed up summary. I have already read the series and I can feel the excitement again through your summaries. When I read this I felt an interesting fast writing style, it was different but very affective in this way, can't wait to read more.

Dear Ms.Kimball
The book I am reading is Warriors, Into The Wild. In the first part of the book rusty a house cat has mysterious dreams of him trying to catch a mouse in the forrest. He wakes up and goes outside next to the garden, beyond the garden is a forrest his friend comes over and then he has the sudden urge to go into the forrest. He hears rustling of an animal in the forrest and he jumps in, it turns out to be a mouse while the tabby cat is hunting rusty encounters another cat they have a duel then the cats leader comes and asked the cat to join them. She said she has been watching them duel and she likes how he fights so he accepts. She leads him to there campus and the leader tells the tribe about him. The cats are not impressed they see his collar and they think he is a house cat, they think house cats are lazy. to earn there respect rusty attacks a cat that insulted him, red tail they fight and fight and rusty's collar fell off and the cats have accepted him into there tribe.

That seems to be a cool cat book! It makes me have the urge to read it and find out more about this cool cat adventure. Great response! Although the punctuation and capitalization is off, your response was clear and easy to read. The capitalization and punctuation made it a little hard to read, but other than that, great detailed response!

Dear Class,

I have recently finished How to Speak Dolphins by Ginny Rorby. The main sharacter, Lily, has a brother who is autistic, and a stepfather who refuses to give him the help he needs. Until Adam, Lilys brother, meets a dolphin. Lily has never seen Adam as happy as he is with Nori ever since their mother died. Don, Lily's stepfather also sees this and decides to put Adam in a preschool for autistic children. But, Lily and her new friend Zoe, who is blind, feel bad for Nori, the dolphin, and wishes she could go back to her mother after she was taken in while she was sick with cancer. The cancer is gone but Nori is still here helping Adam instead of being in the open ocfean where she belongs. Lily is torn, she loves to see her brother so happy when he's around Nori, but she also knows it's not fair for Nori to be confined in the Oceanarium. You will have ot read the book to find out whether Lily trys sets Nori free, or keeps her for the sake of her brother.

The stepfather married the mother before she died. The stepfather is in fact Adam and Lily's only guardian. Lastly, I am pretty sure Lily's real father died in the war.

The time of fetch is about this boy named Edward and he has a stone and its called the fetch and it controls the world/ dangerous.
The lost children is about a girl named Josephine and a boy named Fargus shows up at Josephine's garden so then he lives in a shack and his parents died so he choose its better to not speak.

Dear Ms. Kimball,
I am reading Mockingjay, by Suzanne Collins. So far, Katniss has been visiting her home's, District 12, ruins before she has to go to District 13. She is looking at the destruction that the bombs made. While she is doing this, Katniss is also thinking about how she has killed a lot of people. But she doesn't mean at The Hunger Games. Since she was rebellious at the first Games when she pulled out the poisonous berries for she and Peeta to eat, Katniss has been considered as a rebel, which leaded to being part of a plan to overthrow the Capitol. Because of this, the Capitol bombed her home. Many people died from the bombs, but Katniss's friend, Gale, saved her mother and sister, along with about 800 other people.
Additionally, Peeta is being tortured by the Capitol because they think that he knew all about the plan to overthrow the Capitol, which he didn't because he and Katniss didn't find out about the plan until after the Games.

I just started a new book called "Beneath" by Roland Smith.
Pat O'Tool, the main character, has always looked up to his older brother Coop. But one day Coop abandons him without telling Pat where he is going. One day short of exactly a year, Pat is in school and he gets a package. When Pat got this package I was scared for him because, one, he didn't order the package, and two, who orders a package to someone's school. When he opened it, it was a voice recorder, from Coop. To understand this next part you are going to need to know about Coop. Coop is...not very modern day. For example, he does not use technology. So, no email, no phone, no online chatting, no gaming, and not even radios. Anything with technology he would not use. Coop also only likes books from he 1800's, and I predict he likes to think he is somewhere around that time.
So, when Pat opens the package from Coop, he is shocked at the recorder. It was a big step for Coop! Pat thought he wouldn't do that in a million years. Coop, on the voice recorder, tells Pat to not show this to anyone, and he explained why he ran away, coop also wants to keep on communicating with Pat so he tells Pat his P.O box, and to record something back, and send it back to the P.O box.

That is where I am right now.

I am soon to be finished with the first Harry Potter book, which is written by J.K . Rowling. I am near the end of the book so all the action is happening right now. The main characters, Harry, Ron, and Hermoine, are attempting to see what see what a weird three headed dog is guarding. The dog has been guarding this vault for many years and Harry and his friends want to find out what it's really guarding.

Sam,
I'm confused why you didn't talk about the main ideas f the story. If I didn't read the book, how am I supposed to know why there is a three headed dog? How am I supposed to know about that vault? Keep this in mind. A summary is a quick retell of what is happening in the story from beginning to end. If you could just add a litlle bit more of what was happening in this story and what it's about, that would be great. That's all I'm asking.

Is someone controlling the dog to protect the vault? Why do they want to know what the dog is guarding? Are they looking for something they think might be in the vault? Or are they just curious?

Dear class,

The book I'm reading is Ghost of War: Lost at Khe Sahn. So this is my summary. A boy named Andrew finds a grenade and shows it to his friends. Then he hears a voice saying, "that looks like my lucky grenade." They become friends with this ghost that they need to save, so they try and make the ghost remember everything that happened to him. They know his name and contacted his wife and before that they went to the wall and figured out all that stuff. After they went to the wall they did some research. When they contacted Zords wife (Zord is the ghost) they figured out that Andrews best friend's dad was Zord's best friend in the Vietnam war. That's where I am right now.

Dear class,

I'm recently reading a book called "Tsunamis and Other Natural Disasters" by Mary Pope Osborne and Natalie Pope Boyce. In the book, there is a girl named Tilly Smith, a school-girl from England, who was on vacation with her family at the coast of Thailand. It was the day after Christmas in 2004. When she walked along the beach, she noticed the waves rolling in with foam that looked like it was sizzling in a frying pan. She knew it was the warning sign of a tsunami, the huge waves of water caused by an earthquake, because she learned in school just two weeks before. Then she rushed up and down the beach screaming for everyone to run. Minutes later, huge tsunami waves crashed onto the beach. Thanks to Tilly, many other people survived from tsunami.

Dear class,
I have been reading The Doll People. I am not very far threw but I will tell you what I know. The story is in the perspective of a girl-doll named Annabelle Doll and she is quite curious. She has a mom a dad a brother and an uncle but what is missing? Her aunt was lost and not found. Her owner was a nice girl who played with them nicely but there is a younger... SISTER. The owners sister brought her own weird dolls to play with the doll family and that was mean. She left the dolls in odd positions and that was annoying. The dolls didn't get to move around a lot because the only free time they got was when there owner was at school and asleep. Even though they could move around they couldn't go out of the house, that was how there aunt was lost. The last thing I read was that Annabelle's aunt had a diary that Annabelle kept a secret
so that no one would take it away because they didn't want Annabelle to learn the ways of someone who left the house because that was dangerous. Thank you for reading.

Teachers and classmates,
The story I am choosing to summarize is called Among The Thorns. When the main character, Eve, walks through the woods with her best friend, Echo, they meet an old lady in a cloak. She tells them that it's coming sooner than she expects. But Eve, nor Echo, knows what "it" is.

The Aphrodisiac Council is an ancient council with chosen people from the community, which contained 5 women, 5 men, and a "seer" who could be male or female. the "seer" could date not man but many at once.Every end of the year, the "seer" would send out envelopes telling all the 21-year-olds who their pair was, unless you got engaged before the pair was chosen. The main character, Eve, got her letter early, even though a character who is yet to be introduced, Milo, was supposedly going to propose to her.

Later, Eve has to move. But she doesn't want to leave her best friend, Echo, behind. She decides to run away with Echo to the forest behind their house, beyond where they are familiar with. They bring little food and water. 5 granola bars, and two bottles of water. They get lost when they want to turn around, and are left starving, alone, and lost. Eve believes she hears the trees almost whistling. Whistling two words. "love" and "Philippe". She sees a carving on a tree that says Evelyn+Echo+Philippe surrounded by a heart. Later, Eve passes out and wakes up in a home. The man who owns the house's name, is Philippe.

Wow, what an interesting story! Eve and Echo must have gone through a lot. Milo must have been devastated when he found out Eve had ran off. It kind of seems like one of those situations where Eve hasn't even thought twice about Milo but Milo is always trying to talk with her. Also I was wondering if the couples where chosen at random or were planned out.

This week I finnished the book The Mostly True Adventures of Homer P. Figg. It is about a boy named Homer who lives with his awful uncle. His uncle makes Homer's brother, Harold, enter the army. Harold isn't old enough to be in the army. It is the middle of the civil war, and Homer dosn't want Harold to get killed.
Homer runs away from his uncle's home in search of Harold. Homer runs into two cons and is talked into helping them. Finnally, the cons get scared away and Homer gets somebody to help him find Harold.
The person falls in love on their way to where Harold is. He leaves Homer on his own.
After lots of crazy adventures (pretending to be half pig, riding a hot air balloon to safety, and other crazy stuff), Homer finds his way to Harold. The bad thing is, Harold doesn't want to go home. But, Harold gets hurt, and while he is recovering, he gets dismissed from the army because of his young age. Woohoo!
That is basically the end of the book.

Wow! This sounds like a crazy book you read! I really liked how you listed all of the crazy adventures that Homer get's himself into, and that really pulled me into the story. This story sounds very interesting and funny at the same time. Do you know what time period this book is in? Did Homer and Harold ever have parents? Do you know why the uncle put Harold in the war? Why did the uncle only put Harold in the war, but not Homer? I hope you can answer these questions for me. Great response!

Dear Class,

This week I have been reading the book, The Lions of Little Rock by Kristin Levine. The main character in the book is a twelve-year-old girl who’s name is Marlee. This book is set back in 1958, which was a very hard time in Little Rock, Arkansas. This is the time that black people were being treated unfairly, and integration was also happening in schools. In the book the author shows how Marlee, the main character, has to live in these hard times. In the book I learn that the Marlee is very shy at school but she isn’t as shy at home. Marlee has a mean friend named, Sally, but Sally isn’t really her friend, anymore. Marlee meets this new girl at school Liz and they became friends. Marlee has to do a big presentation at school with Liz, but Liz couldn’t make it, you will find out the rest if you read, The Lions of Little Rock.

Dear Ms.Kimball,
I just finished the book "I even funnier" by James Patterson which is the sequel to the book 'I funny'. What happened was Jamie, the main character, had just won the Long Beach comedy club trophy in the last book, and he is going to the New York state finals. Once he gets there, his whole family is there to cheer him on. Right when he rolls himself onstage (he is in a wheelchair), he is very nervous. He is doing what he calls 'dying onstage' when he is forcing the words out of his mouth. "Hi, um.... I'm Jamie Grimm, and, uh....." his mind is blank. But then he looks out into the audience and sees his Uncle Frankie give him the 'thumbs up' sign, and then he remembers every single joke, every single line, every single word! He nails the audition and moves onto the semifinals in Las Vegas! But soon tragedy strikes and the worst possible scenario comes true! Jamie and Uncle Frankie are riding in Uncle Frankie's Mustang, and all of a sudden, Uncle Frankie passes out! Jamie digs his phone out of his pocket and immediately calls 911. So that means Jamie can't go to the semifinals in Las Vegas! Later, after Uncle Frankie heals, they give Jamie another chance to make it to the finals, and he does it! I think the Finals are in the third book, 'I Totally Funniest', and I am excited to find out if Jamie wins!

Also, I cant believe his uncle passed out, do you know why? It was a total twist in the story. I wonder what will happen in the finals? I have just started a book called Dead City by James Ponti. I got this book from the book fair last week and I am enjoying it very much.
In the story, the main character, Molly Bigelow’s mother died and every day since the death of her mother, Molly goes to her mother's workplace, a morgue. Molly is now an expert on zombies and meets up with her mother’s old colleagues, Dr.H and Natalie. Were I am right now, Molly, Dr.H, and Natalie have just left for a field trip to a crime scene, which is very rare because Dr.H doesn’t like to leave his office with the dead bodies.
I am enjoying this book very much and would recommend it to other people.

Dear Class,

I just started reading Brown Girl Dreaming, by Jacqueline Woodson. This book is about Jacqueline growing up.
Jacqueline was born in Ohio but when her parents split up her mom moves her, her sister, and brother to South Carolina were Jacqueline's grandparents live. Jacqueline makes many memories in South Carolina but her mom longs to move to Manhattan, so Jacqueline's mom, Mary Ann Irby, keeps going to New York yo find a place to live. When one time she comes back with a baby boy, Roman.
Finally after a while Mary Ann Irby finds a place and moves her family to Brooklyn. The thing is although Jacqueline loves Brooklyn she misses South Carolina. So she goes to visit in the summer, but right before they leave Roman, who although she really hated at first now loves, gets really sick. So they go to South Carolina without Roman and Mary Ann Irby.
Unfortunately thats all I've read so far. Can't wait to update you on this book, I strongly suggest it! :)

Dear class,
I am summarizing a book called smile. The main character in smile is Raina. When her friends mom drops her home after Girl Scouts they race to Raina's front door, Raina falls and knocks out her two front teeth. They take Raina to an orthodontist to look at her teeth and the orthodontist says she needs braces. An orthodontist is a type of dentist. Raina feels that people at her school won't like her because she's getting braces. It's going to be hard for Raina because she is about to graduate and move into high school. Raina had to get headgear, she is not happy about that but the orthodontist reassures her that she only has to wear it going to bed. I never really like comic books, but this one was a good book!

Dear Ms Kimball,

I am reading Bridge to Terabithia. The main characters in this story, Jess and Leslie, have a wild imagination.
Throughout the story Jess is one of the fastest runner in his grade. He raced against a girl named Leslie. Leslie beat Jess and that is how they became friends. They made a magical kingdom in the woods. They named it Terabithia. Jess and Leslie are King and Queen. Leslie also has another place that she hangs out, it is her Golden Room. It is an arch of trees with a golden carpet from the pines. There are also specks of light moving from the swaying trees. When they come back to Terabithia they get a prince. It is a dog. They keep him for protection because there are “monsters” and other made up creatures. Terabithia is a place to have made up wars, to talk, and to swing across the creek on a rope. Now Leslie brings Jess to the golden room. They walk down it and admire it as there secret. Jess loves it there. That is where I left off.

I have a prediction that something is going to happen to the golden room.

I like how clearly you summarized the story yet also included beautiful details of the setting. Bridge to Terabithia is famous for the special friendship between a boy and a girl. Many kids stick to their own genders for their friends, but Jess and Leslie don't, despite being made fun of for it. What did you think of their friendship? Also, what do you think of their wild imaginations?
