Captain Kirk and Spock

Characters make a story. The personalities and traits of the characters greatly influence the plot of the story. Some characters are shy. Some characters are bold. Some characters are selfish. Some characters sacrifice a lot for others. Some characters are indecisive. Some characters never give up no matter what. There are so many types of characters in the stories we read.

This Week's Prompt:

Describe a character in a book you have been reading.
Think about the character's personality and background. Describe some important traits about this character that influence how he or she acts in the story. Support your description with evidence from the text.

Dear classmates,
The main character is named Fireheart. He is very independent, but now that he has an apprentice, he loves to help hips little kitten. His inner personalities have changed from hunting by himself to hunting with friends or partners. This brings to a conclusion, that Fireheart had a great turning point, and that he makes friends along the way!

In what book is Fireheart the main character? I know the book, but the class may not.

Dear class,
Yes, Fireheart is the main character. When he was independent, he didn't really know how to work with others, so he was solo for his first act. But what really made him change is that he made a ton of friends along the way. This shows that Fireheart knew what it was like to have a partner with Graystripe. Then, he gets an apprentice, which is like a younger student that he teaches. Sadly, she I is injured and can't become a warrior. They are training a new kitten called Cloudkit.

I have a lot of questions for you. So be prepared. Who is Fireheart? Is he part of a war with other cats? Who is the cat who got injured? And how? What is the book about? And is there hot and cold. ( I mean is their like a war between 2 "nations." If they are in war, what caused them to fight? Finally Where do they live?

I am reading Harry Potter and the Sorccer's stone. Harry is brave and caring. The first reason Harry is brave is because he stayed with the Dusleys. The Dursleys are always mean to him and give him the hardest time possible, but Harry doesn't complain. Not everyone can put up with the Dusleys that long. Another reason Harry is brave is because he stands up for himself and his friends when Draco Malfoy makes fun of them. Draco Malfoy is very mean and makes fun of you and your background. Harry is caring because on the Hogwarts Express, he bought a lot of candy and noticed that Ron Weasley only had a sandwich, so Harry shared the candy with Ron. The final reason isn't for only being brave, and not only for being caring, but for both. Hermione was in the girls bathroom when a troll was lose and Harry and Ron went to save her. That is brave and caring.

He definitely shows bravery as he confronts many scary creatures and people throughout the series. I sure admire him! Dear 5K students,
I am reading a book called Nancy Drew and the fox hunt mystery. Nancy's friend Laura is great into riding horses she will get reared bucked off or stepped on but doesn't care. Laura relates to be because when horses do that to me I don't care but I just have to make sure I'm ok.Laura is a adventurous and outdoor girl she loves animals and caring for them.Laura loves to go on fox hunts and gallop through the wind and jump the jumps. Also Laura is really brave to ride in adult hunts because you never know what could happen in a blink.

Laura sounds like somewhat of a daring character. I like your word choice of "adventurous." I'm guessing this is an enjoyable book for you because you can relate to the main character so easily. One question I have is, What are "adult hunts"? From your description, they sound dangerous!

An adult hunt is for grown ups but Laura's mother is the leader and let her in it.Laura is a fearless rider and will probably never have any issues. Adult hunts are not dangerous there just for older people at least 16 and up.

Dear Class,
Rose from the book Out of My Mind is very kind. Rose went to sit with Melody even though she was made fun of a little for being friends with Melody. I think Rose knows how to make people feel nice and special. Rose is also very brave because when Rose, Melody and her family at the aquarium and saw Claire and Molly they who were both really mean to Melody. They we're mean to Melody only because of how she looked and because she couldn't talk. Claire and Molly asked Rose who she was with she said Melody and her family even though she knew that they were going to make fun of her. That took a lot of courage and also to know you would be made fun of took a lot of bravery but she liked Melody so she took her side because she told the truth and didn't lie to Claire and Molly and defended Melody.

I agree with you that it takes a lot of courage to proudly admit something that people might make fun of you for. Even though it sounds like having fun with Melody at the aquarium was a great thing to do, Rose might have been self-conscious about it because Melody is so unique and physically challenged. I like how you said Rose "defended" Melody. Why do you think Claire and Molly are so mean to Melody?

Dear Class,

In the book Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone by J.K. Rowling, Harry is brave. One reason Harry is brave is that Harry did not runaway from a mystic guy in a cloak in the Forbidden Forest when Draco Malfoy did. Another reason Harry is brave is that Harry does not runaway for Draco Malfoy ( the bully of the school) but stands up to Draco. The last reason Harry is brave is that Harry does not runaway for Voldemort ( the greatest evil wizard of all time) but faces Voldemort and try's to kill him. That is why Harry Potter is brave in the book Harry Potter and that Sorcerer's Stone by J.K. Rowling.

Standing up to a bully definitely takes bravery, but standing up to the greatest evil wizard of all time --wow! Harry seems to face scary, intimidating, dangerous people a lot! I said that your response is very organized because you used transition words and phrases such as, "One reason," "Another reason," and "The last reason" to organize what you wrote. I encourage students to organize their writing in a way that helps readers follow the ideas. Good job!

Don't you think Harry's survival against Voldemort's death curse was mostly luck? I don't know if you can be brave when you are only a baby in a crib. I think Harry is brave for other reasons though.

Hi class!
I am reading the book The One and Only Ivan by Katherine Applegate. The main character is Ivan and he is very creative and artistic. He loves to draw and paint pictures on his canvas. Art is a big part of Ivan's personality. Also he doesn't like loud people at his habitat, so that tells me that he is shy. He doesn't like people, except for Julia of
course! Julia is Ivan's best friend, because he enjoys her company and her drawings. He likes Julia because Julia figures out that Ivan's drawing is a beetle, when Mack and George, Julia's father, could not figure out what it was. Another characteristic of Ivan is that he is very smart, but everyone thinks he isn't, because he is a gorilla, so he doesn't have thoughts in his head. But in reality, he is really smart. He remembers all of his keepers and knows all of their names. To sum it all up, those are all of the characteristics of Ivan from the One and Only Ivan by Katherine Applegate.

I think it's amazing how the author created a gorilla that has all of those realistic qualities in a believable way. Ivan seems like a very thoughtful and sensitive gorilla too. Art helps him express himself. Why do you think Ivan doesn't really like people? Is it because he is supposed to be a wild animal but is kept in captivity or do you think it's something else?

I think Ivan doesn't like people because he thinks they don't really pay attention to what going on around them. In the book, Ivan says, "Humans waste words. They toss them like banana peels and leave them to rot." This sentence tells me that Ivan thinks poorly of humans. Also, he says,"Humans speak to much. They chatter like chimps, crowding the world with their noise even when they have nothing to say." I think Ivan believes that humans are loud and maybe even a little annoying to listen to? Also, he might not like humans because they don't think that Ivan has an imagination or thoughts in his head. Plus, humans can never figure out what Ivan is drawing(Except for Julia!), so that could be another reason that Ivan doesn't like humans.

I just finished The One and Only Ivan too. I noticed that Ivan is stuck in his domain (cage). How do you think Ivan feels about that? Ivan also loses his friend Stella the elaphant. Do you think that he is still thinking about that at the end or did he get over it? Also you did a fantastic job on explaining his personality.

Thank you for replying to my reading response! First, when you read the book, did you like it? I think that Katherine Applegate is a very talented author and I loved her book. I think that Ivan feels depressed that he lives in captivity, because he wishes to be a free roaming gorilla
and be out in the wild. I am inferring that maybe Ivan is jealous of Bob, though it never says that in the book. Ivan would be jealous of Bob because Bob is a free roaming dog. Ivan has never met another gorilla because he does not live in the wild. He's never even seen another gorilla, except on his old, broken TV. He might want not want to be in captivity so that he can meet another gorilla. Next, I think that by the end of the story, Ivan is sad that he lost Stella, but is getting over it because he has Ruby to keep him company now. I think he misses her, but has recovered, thanks to Ruby. And thank you for the compliment on explaining Ivan's personality!

This week I read the book El Deafo by Cece Bell. The main character is named Cece. She is very kind but sometimes worried about making friends since she wears a hearing aid. In first grade she makes a friend named Laura who brags a lot and says she is better that her to her face but shares her lunch with Cece. Cece gets really frustrated with her and most of her friends. Her Imagination is Cece's happy place since she is very shy. She doesn't even have the courage to speak up to her friends. At the end of the book Cece has enough courage to speak up and is no longer shy.

Cece's imagination lets her be herself and she imagines that she is a superhero named El Deafo. Cece's imagination doesn't always let her be happy . Just like in her real world she ends up losing a lot of friends because she is judged by the way she looks.

Dear class,

Im reading the Tale Of Despereaux. This book is about a mouse named Despereaux and Despereaux is the last child that will be born from his mother. Everyone thought that Despereaux was going to die because he was born with his eyes open and that is really bad for a mouse to be born with his eyes open. But Despereaux father and mother, brother ( Furlough), and sister ( Merlot) were wrong. But Despereaux was a strange mouse, like he didn't eat books he read them. One day Despereaux was listening to music and he was next to the kings foot. So the mouse council reported him to the dungeon. The dungeon was a filthy place with rats. It was a long walk to the a dungeon but Despereaux had 2 men on his side watching him so he didn't run away. One of the men on his side was his brother furlough.
I haven't got far in the book yet.

Dear Miss Kimball,

If I could give Despereaux a trait it would be curious. I would pick curious because Despereaux always is curious about thing such as when Despereaux heard the kings music he went to see what the magical sound was, and I think Despereaux was very curious to see what the sound he was so attracted from. I also think that Despereaux is brave. The reason I think that Despereaux is brave, is because Despereaux went down...down.......down.........to the dungeon to save princess Pea from the bittersweet Mig. I think that Mig is bittersweet because Mig tried hurting princess Pea but then she changed her mind and let her go. One last thing that Despereaux is, is he is not a follower he is a leader. 2 details to support my trait is Despereaux went down in the dungeon to save someone that he barely new but loved, and I don't thing any other mouse would have the guts to do that. Another thing Despereaux did that shows he is not a follower but a leader is Desperaux let the princess Pea hold Despereuax in her hand. Also Despereaux stood by the kings foot and no mouse would do that.

If you don't like the beginning of the book I would just read maybe 10 more pages, because I really liked the book (finished reading it) and I think if you read 10 more pages you might like the book but if you still don't like the book then I would switch.

I am reading Mockingjay by Suzanne Collins. The character I am going to describe is Haymitch Abernathy, Katniss's mentor. I think Haymitch has a lot of good information and everybody treats his ideas like they are trash. Without Haymitch's help, Katniss would be dead right now so no one should underestimate him. One word I would use to describe Haymitch is experienced. He has been a mentor for 25 years now, so he's got to know something.
Just like Katniss, Haymitch made the Capitol look dumb. So President Snow killed his loved ones, just as he was threatening to do with Katniss.

In the Hunger Games, when you win, you become a mentor for the new tributes. When you are a mentor and you have tributes in the arena, you can send them parachutes which have a package tied to them. Haymitch sent Katniss lifesaving gifts through parachutes, so that is why Katniss would be dead if it weren't for him.

Another reason that Donovan is sassy is he really disrespectful and rude in general. For example, look at Bradley Calkers. He says mean and sassy things to his sister, and his classmates. Also his best friend. That is basically what Donovan does! He is a jerk like Bradley! Another GREAT example of Donovan, Draco Malfoy. Also he is a jerk to everyone.

The main character is named Cass in THE NAME OF THIS BOOK IS A SECRET. Cass is a adventuress girl with horrible manners. In the book she never says thank you, please, excuse me and all other manners people should to say. She is always where's a backpack on because she wants to be prepared for any disaster possible. Cass always tells her friends that there is a ( any type of nature disaster.) She has pointy ears (like a elf) and turns bright red when she is unhappy. Like the time when Amber ( The nicest kid in school) gave here lip gloss and she had to accept it because she didn't want to be mean to Amber. Cass will be the bravest person you met in your entire life. Because she went to _____. She was dressed up as a ____ !

I am guessing you left those blanks in there because the author did, too (as part of his writing style).

Cass is such an amusing character to me. I agree she is very adventurous. One thing though: I thought you said Cass had "horrible manners." Why did she accept Amber's lip gloss if she didn't want it? If Cass really had bad manners, I imagine she would be blunt with Amber and say that she didn't want her stupid, icky lip gloss (and possibly throw it back in her face). Is there something more to Cass?

I want to draw in classmates to increase there curiosity about the book. For example if somebody says "This is a secret", pretty much all the time you want to know what the secret is. I wouldn't judge her as mean and horrible (Now that I read the rest of the second book). The reason why she accepted it is because One Amber is the nicest girl in school, two If she does refuse everybody will think she is a really bad person, and finally three She does not want to be picked on,(Partly because she already has to deal with Max Envrest).

I am reading Harry Potter and the Goblet of fire. I think Harry Potter is brave. One reason Harry is brave is because he had a past trauma that he is not affected by. Another reason Harry's brave is because he fights a Dragon! The last reason Harry is brave is because a reporter named Rita Scetter writes false information about him but Harry fights back.

Harry faces some tough challenges (especially a dragon! Yikes!) When you say that Harry is "not affected by" his past trauma, is that really true? Do you mean that it doesn't bother him at all?

Also, how does he fight back against the slimy reporter, Rita? Does he punch her in the face or something?

The book I'm reading is Percy Jackson Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan. My character is Percy he is the son of Poseidon god of the sea. Percy does not believe in gods. He is 12 years old and has ADHD and dyslexia. He's been kicked out of 6 schools in 6 years.

I think Percy does not mind getting kick out of 6 schools. Also the anther only gives two reasons. One of the reasons is in 4th grad he switched a wrong leaver and his class got a unexpected swim. He did not believe in gods because he did not now his dad was a god. Until he got to a special camp for half-bloods half human half god.

I am reading Scumble by Ingrid Law. The character I am describing is Ledger. Ledger is outgoing, scared, and powerful. Ledger is outgoing because he thinks he is going to get the "savvy" to run fast but he doesn't, and as a result he doesn't give up on running. Ledger is scared because at his Uncle Antry's ranch he finds out that it's not just small objects that Ledger can blow apart, it's the whole wide world. He is afraid that he will not be able to control his powers. Ledger is powerful because his savvy is so strong that he he destroyed a barn, a motorcycle, and a lot of other objects. In conclusion, Ledger is outgoing, scared, and immensely powerful.

Your response is very organized! I was curious about your use of "outgoing" to describe Ledger. When I think of someone who is outgoing, I think of a person who loves to talk and make friends. Someone who easily carries a conversation and enjoys being around other people. Is that what Ledger is like?

Also, being "scared" may not be a personality trait if it is only a temporary feeling. We all get scared sometimes. Is Ledger the type of person who is always fearful of danger and problems? Then you could say he is a "fearful" person.

I'm reading "The Name of This Book is a Secret". There are 2 main characters. Cassandra is one if the main characters. She is very curious, nice, active, has huge ears, and very suspicious. The second main character is Max-Ernest. He is a stand up comedian but is terrible, He is very annoying and such a blabber mouth. right now they are looking for a magicians house and see if he died from a smell that they think is around there school.

At home I am reading More Scary Story's To Tell In The Dark. The book does not explain the characters so I am writing about a book called There's A Boy In The Girls Bathroom. Bradly Chalkers is the main character. Bradly Chalkers is mean. For example he was trying to kick a girl . He is not honest for example he was lying to his mom about the A's on the wall.

Hi class I am reading a book called Bekle. A character is named Bekle is a white creature that is an imaginary friend. He is determined. For example, he never got chosen by a kid to be an imaginary friend. So he built a boat to sail from where imaginary friends are born to the real world.

To answer your question Beckle did make it to a city he was confused because no one as cheerful and it was not like he thought. And he found a play ground but he could still not find a friend. But then he herd a voice. It was a girl and they slowly then quickly became friends.

Ledger is the kind of person who likes to make friends. Evidence from the text is that Ledger becomes friends with a girl named Sarah Jane but Sarah ends up stealing from Ledger.

Ledger is the type of person who is always fearful of danger and problems and that is why I called Ledger scared.
