Reading Response #7

In our independent reading books, we often get to know characters who act very similar to how we would act. Sometimes it can be comforting to read a story in which the main character has a similar personality to you. Other times it can be intriguing to read a story in which the main character has a very different personality than you and acts very differently than how you would act in a given situation.

This Week's Prompt:
Choose a main character from your independent reading. Compare and contrast the character's personality and actions to your own using specific examples.

Remember, go deeper than comparisons that simply state gender, family make-up, and appearances. Focus on important character traits rather than things out of a character's control. Be specific and give examples to support!

Dear Ms.Kimball,
I am reading Starring Sally J. Freedman as Herself by Judy Blume. Sally J. Freedman, the main character, has a quick temper. So when her parents move her to Florida to help her brother who's sick, she gets mad, but she hides it. She kind of blames her brother for moving to Florida. That's where we contrast. I wouldn't blame him because I know that it's not his fault. But, we compare when she says "I don't know if I could survive this without the beach," I agree with her. Partly. Well, not the surviving without it, but I love the beach about as much as her. I also compare where she loves her parents so much and would do anything for them. I love my parents and would do anything for them. Thanks!

P.S The story takes place in 1945, so there is a lot of talk about Hitler and the liberation of the Jews.

Dear Whitney,

I feel like characters with quick tempers are common in literature. Because they anger so easily and often overreact to situations, they get in trouble, which usually makes for an interesting plot!

How did you know Sally "blamed" her brother for her parents moving? If you know it's not his fault, how come Sally doesn't?

Also, do you have a quick temper or do you differ from Sally in that sense?

I differ from Sally as I do not have as quick a temper as her. Also, I know that it's not his fault because I'm not angry. Anger can blind people sometimes, and that's what I think happened with Sally.

I have a question. Is Sally good at hiding her anger? If she is not good at hiding it do her parents find out that Sally is mad and blaming her brother. And is Sally a Jew? And why is Sally's brother in Florida? And where does Sally live before she goes to Florida? Your response makes me really want to the book.

Dear class,
I just finished the book, Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The battle of the labyrinth, by Rick Riordan. I am going to first contrast using the main character Percy Jackson and me. We are different because Percy is very adventurous while I am more easy going. For example, Percy goes on quests and fights monsters during his vacation, while I am going to a water park or something during my vacation. Another way we are different, is because I am more aware of my decisions and Percy, is not so aware. To prove my point, Percy sneaks away from his very, very, mean and strict camp director, and later on, gets in big trouble for breaking the rules. I would not dare to sneak out and get punished.
Percy and I are similar because we both are always looking out for our friends. For example, Percy went out looking for his friend Grover when he went missing. He also went looking for his other friend Annabeth when she went missing. I would also go looking for my friends if they ever went missing, or if they got hurt or just having an off day.
As you can see, Percy and I are very different, but also similar in many ways.

Dear Trisha,

I have to say, I think going to a water park is adventurous, too --maybe not as adventurous as fighting monsters and traveling across the country, but still exciting.

When you say Percy goes looking for his friends when they went missing, I imagine any person would seek out lost friends. Missing friends are something to worry about! Does Percy do other things for his friends that shows he's dedicated to them?

Yes, there are many other things Percy does to show that he always looks out for friends. For example, he helped his ENEMY, Clarisse, from a gigantic man eating cyclops.

Dear Class,
I am reading the book The BFG by Roald Dahl. I am going to compare and contrast me and Sophie.
Ways Sophie and I compare are Sophie is very polite to the BFG. I am very polite to my family, but not to a giant because I have never met a giant unlike Sophie.
Another reason Sophie and I are alike is Sophie wonders. For instances in the text it said "It couldn't be." Sophie is wondering what the big thing on her street is. I wonder to. I wonder about many things. For example, I wonder about what is out of our solar system.
Ways me and Sophie contrast are in the beginning of the book Sophie lives at an dormitory with other children. I live with my mom, dad, sister, and brother, at my house.
Sophie also corrects the BFG ALOT. And the BFG hates being corrected, but Sophie still corrects him. I do not mind people using bad grammar so I would not correct the BFG as much as Sophie.

Sophie sounds like a fun character to read about. When you say she "wonders," do you mean she is a very curious person? Most people wonder about things (such as who is the strange person on my street), but curious people constantly wonder and question things. Is Sophie like that? If so, can you give an example?

Also, why does Sophie correct the BFG a lot? Is she obnoxious about it or is she trying to be helpful to the BFG?

Sophie wonders what and who is the person on my street. I think Sophie corrects the BFG a lot because she is trying to help the BFG with his grammar. The BFG always says, when he gets corrects, "I never had a chance to go to school, giants do not go to school."

Dear Ms.Kimball,
I am reading The Giver by Lois Lowry. Jonas, the main character, wants everybody to have all the memories that the Giver gives him. But where Jonas and I contrast is that some memories I think people could live without some memories. For example, when Jonas says "Why don't they know about this? Why doesn't everyone feel pain and hunger?" I disagree with that.Where I do compare with Jonas is that everyone shouldn't be the same, but I don't think that we need to know hunger. In a perfect world no one would have to endure severe hunger. But that's really what this book is about. Sameness.But, to know happiness, you need to know sadness. So, once again, there's two sides to every compare and contrast argument. In conclusion, I compare Jonas because I don't think that everybody should be the same, and we contrast where he thinks that everybody should know everything including pain and hunger.

Hi Whitney,
I am a former student of Ms. Kimball. She's awesome, right?! I read the Giver, too. I really liked it. I agree with you that it's bad when everything is the same, exept I disagree that people shouldn't know about bad things, like pain and hunger. I think that if people don't know about bad things, than they wouldn't understand how lucky they are. Have you gotten to the part about the secret of release yet? That part is really memorable.

I like your argument that people should know what pain and hunger is so that they appreciate the fortunate life they live. It's also important for people to know that others are suffering in the world so that something can be done to help the sufferers. Empathy is so important to making the world a better place.

Dear class,
I am reading Every Soul a Star by Wendy Mass. I will be comparing and contrasting Ally and I. First I will compare: Ally and I both love to read, and we both like to observe the constellations and stars. I really like looking up at the stars and connecting them to make constellations, just like Ally. Also, Ally and I don't wear make-up and we think it's not important at the ages that we're at. Plus, Ally and I both have little brothers that like bugs. My brother Jack likes bugs, and Kenny, Ally's little brother in the book, loves them as well. Now, I will contrast. Ally believes in fairies and mystical creatures such as fairies, and believes that they have an entire society on the ground. Personally, I don't believe in fairies or whimsical creatures like that, but everyone is different. Also, Ally her brother Kenny get along. Me and my brother fight a lot and most of the time don't spend our time together. Finally, Ally and I contrast because Ally lives in the middle of nowhere on a camp ground. I live in a very busy town, on a very busy street, therefore, we are different. I just started the book, so I didn't have much to write.

Ally sounds like a very interesting character to follow. I like your use of the word "whimsical" to describe Ally's beliefs.

You say you and Ally both have brothers that like bugs, but neither one of you has any control over that. What you do have control over is how you relate to your brother. You contrasted your relationship with your brother to Ally's relationship with her brother. Why do you think Ally and her brother get along so well? How is that different from your and your brother's relationship?

I think that Ally and her brother get along so well because they support each other. Kenny is always saying things like, "She knows them better than anyone!" about Ally. He is complimenting her on her knowledge on constellations. Me and my brother don't hang out that much, and we are always competing against each other. Dear Ms.Kimball,
I am reading "This Isn't What It Looks Like." The character I am going to compare and contrast myself to is Max-Ernest. I am different from Max-Ernest because in the story Max-Ernest is always nervous and scared of things that normal people would not be worried about including me. Some evidence to prove this from the text is "The super size genetically mutated head lice that turned out only to be cookie crumbs left on his pillow after a midnight snack. The splinter he was positive was tapeworm. The hiccups that proved he had lung disease." This shows that Max-Ernest worries about things that would not usually ever happen and are over the top. I am similar to Max-Ernest because in the story Max-Ernest is very cautious about things he is not sure about. I am also cautious about things that I'm not sure about. For example, in the story Max-Ernest and two of his friends sneak into a chocolate factory and find three chocolate pieces lying on a table and his two friends, Cass, and Yo-Yogi, both eat a piece of chocolate and when Max-Ernest doesn't eat his piece, Yo-Yogi eats his and Cass and Yo-Yogi both pass out and Max-Ernest doesn't.
This appears to represent that Max-Ernest is cautious by not eating the chocolate.

Dear Ryan,

I like the quote you chose from the text to show Max-Ernest's fear, especially how he thought hiccups were a sign of lung disease. He has quite an imagination that creates things to be afraid of!

It seems that the author likes to be playful with Max-Ernest's fear. Sometimes it is a good fear, like when he didn't eat the mysterious chocolate and it saved him, as you mentioned. I like your choice of the word, "cautious." How are you cautious like Max-Ernest?

Dear class,
I am reading Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix by J.K Rowling. I am going to compare and contrast Hermione and I. One way we are the same is we both love to read. In all the Harry Potter books it says how much Hermione loves to read. It also says that she always has her face in a book. That is one reason why she gets amazing grades and is so smart. She loves to read about pretty much everything. I also love to read. It is one of my favorite things to do. I might not be as good of a reader as Hermione, but I still adore reading. Reading makes me happy, relaxed, and smarter, and I think it makes Hermione feel that way too. Hermione is always talking about her reading to Ron and Harry, her best friends. She reads whenever she has free time, and sometimes she reads in a cozy arm chair by the fire. I like to read whenever I have a chance too, and I talk about what I'm reading a lot, and I like reading on cozy thing like my bed.
One way Hermione and I are different is she is a wizard and I am not. She got excepted into Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry and I go to Pine Hill School. Hermione's parents are not wizards or witches like me, but Hermione is. She gets to learn all this magic stuff but I don't. But I don't mind much because I love Pine Hill and I am learning a lot. Sometimes I wish I was a witch like Hermione though.

You say you and Hermione are different based on things that seem out of your control, like being a wizard and going to Hogwarts. How is Hermione's personality different from your personality? You could also compare or contrast how you both approach school and learning.

I agree. If your are comparing and contrasting a character, you should talk about things that the character can control, not things that the character can't help.
I think that a different way Hermione and I are different is I do ballet and Hermione studies and reads. I think that Hermione can control not doing ballet. She could do ballet if she wants to and I could just read and study all the time like her. Since Hermione reads and studies all the time she does very good in school. I also think that I can control not spending all my time reading and studying. I enjoy reading and studying, but I also love ballet so I do both.

Thank you! I really like your response too. The answer to your first question is whenever Hermione has free time she reads. She also always talks about her reading. It also says that Hermione sometimes tells Ron and Haary, her best friends, that she loves to read. This shows that Hermione loves reading and it makes her happy. The reason I know reading makes Hermione smarter, is she reads so much and she learns a lot from her reading so she gets pretty much all her tests correctly and she can answer almost any question. The reason I know that reading makes her feel relaxed is sometimes she curls up on an armchair by a fire and reads for hours at a time. Sometimes she even falls asleep on the armchair while she is reading because she was so comfy and her book was good.
The reason I want to be a witch is you can do some amazing magic, and if you want to you can fly on broomsticks. And a benefit from that is maybe if you are in danger, you can use magic to defend yourself, or you can fly away on a broomstick.

Dear Class,
I am reading a book called " The Doll People." I am going to compare and contrast me and Annabelle.

First of all, I would like to tell you that Annabelle has a totally different life from what I have right now. As a doll, she needs to be careful of humans not seeing her. On the other hand, I just need to watch out not to step on any toys at home. But what makes her life much different from mine is that she will never, ever grow up because she was made as a doll and dolls don't grow. She could also play with another family called the Funcrafts forever as long as they aren't destroyed.
She has the personality to be adventurous and search around the house for her lost Auntie Sarah. She is very brave and courageous to search beyond her home because according to dolls, it is very dangerous to go into the "human world" I would probably read than go outside into a dangerous world to come looking for my lost Aunt, even if my uncle and brother were going to help me. To conclude, Annabelle can be very daring sometimes.

I don't really mean that I'm not adventurous, it's that I'm not
as adventurous as she is. She has the courage to go out the doll house into the human world which other dolls, besides Annabelle, find scary and dangerous. But Annabelle has the courage to go out there and search for her lost aunt. Her searching is another level of search. And when Annabelle never grows up, that means that she will always be a kid and never has to do any hard stuff. She could saty the same and always play with her friend, Tiffany, but I grow up and have more responsibilities than Annabelle.

Dear class,

I am reading History's All Stars: Jackie Robinson Edition. I am going to compare and contrast me and Jackie.

First, we are really good at sports. For example, baseball. First of all, Jackie can HIT. In the book, he got to a game late and drove in a run. I don't think I could do that. But when I am under pressure, I can do great sometimes and bad sometimes. In the the text, it explained Jackie had 3 0-4 days in a row. But the next day, he hit 3 homers. I did that once, but it was for 2 days and I was 0-3. But the next Day, I hit 3-3. I am different from him because, I don't really get in trouble that much as a kid. As a kid, he got in a holding sell for swimming in private property. I know I would never do that!

Dear Ms Kimball,

I think Jackie's good at sports through talent. First of all, in the story he enter's a ping-pong tournament. He has never played before. His friends try to teach him how to play, and he picks it up quickly. That is a skill of mental mailability. I think I have that strength to. In tennis, at my country club, I entered a tennis tournament. I won my first match and I haven't played in a while. That shows mental mobility and focus.

Dear Mrs. Kimball I finished my book Sisters but haven't had time to pick out another book so I am going to compare and contrast my self to Raina. How me and Raina are the same is we both have a sibling that gets something that the we don't want. Evidence in the text writes "What! she gets to get a snake. I hate snakes!". How me and Raina are different is she doesn't like snakes and I like snakes. Evidence that shows she doesn't like snakes is in the text it writes "I hate snakes!". Also another reason that me and Raina are different is she still sleeps with a teddy bear and I don't. Evidence from the text that shows Raina still sleeps with a teddy bear is in the text it writes " Raina you still sleep with teddy bear!". A reason that me Raina are the same is we go on long car rides. Evidence from the text that shows we both go on long car rides is in the text is in the text it writes " Why do we have to make a 12 hr drive to Colorado". All these reason shows how me and Raina are different and the same.

Although you write that you and Raina had similar experiences, these are not character traits. Going on a long car ride doesn't seem to be related to either of your personalities. How is your personality similar to Raina's? How is it different? You may need to look up the definition of a "trait".

I am going to compare and contrast my traits with one of the main characte, Jo from the book Little Woman. In the book it says that Jo really wants to go to college. I also can't wait to go to college. That is one way we are the same. Also another way we are the same is that we both wish we could party every night and every day. Some ways me and Jo are different is she is not looking forward to having to grow up and wear party dresses. I love wearing party dressed and getting dressed up.

I think that Jo wants to do stuff that she isn't suppose to do. For example, Jo wont be able to go to college but she is really wanting to go to college. Also, i think that Jo thinks that everybody should be able to do the same things as men do even though they are a different gender. Im reading Naruto its a manga and the character i'm writing about is Naruto. One thing me and naruto have in common is that we both love pranks. For example when he graduated from the ninja academy they got assigned to three man squads. And his sensei was late he put a chalk eraser in the crack of a slide door and when his sensei opened it, it fell on his head. This proves that he likes to do pranks. And one thing that's different is that he will do anything to get to over come his partner sasuke. For example he got poisoned through a cut fighting ant to get the poison out he had to deepen the cut so he grabbed a kunai knife and stabbed his cut so the poison would fall out with his blood because he didn't want anyone else to save him. This proves he will do anything to overcome sasuke. In conclusion this is why me and naruto are the same and different.

To answer your question naruto wants to overcome sasuke because he always make naruto look bad. And the poison relates because earlier sasuke saves naruto and rubs it in his face. And he dose the thing to get the poison out because he wants to save himself and not rely on other people. And what me and naruto have in common is we both love pranks. And what we don't have in common is he will do anything to overcome his partner sasuke and I like my partners and I don't care about overcoming them.

Hi Ms. Kimball! I miss you so much! Middle school is awesome! I actually am surprised that I ever was scared about it! I just finnished the book called Brain Jack, but I don't have the book in front of me, and I don't know who the author is. The main character was named Sam. Whenever he faced a challenge, he was able to think of a solution very quickly. When I face a challenge, I have lots of trouble thinking up a solution. That aspecially happens when I am stressed. The thing is, Brain Jack is fantasy with some science fiction, so the characters and their traits are not all very realistic.

I am so glad you are loving middle school! Congrats on finishing Brain Jack. A good word to describe Sam is "resourceful." Look up the definition --it's exactly what you were looking for!

However, I think you are resourceful, too! You always came up with clever, creative solutions to problems. I agree, you might need more time to do that, but it doesn't mean you aren't resourceful :)

I wonder what the author does to make the characters unrealistic. Are they superhuman? Even still, I bet they still have realistic character traits, otherwise we wouldn't be able to relate to them as readers and the story would be unenjoyable.

Dear Class,
I I'm reading the book Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief. I am going to compare and contrast myself and Annabeth, Daghter of Athena.

Me and Annabeth are the same because we are both terrifyed of spiders. When Annabeth and Percy, son of Poseidon, was stuck in a pool robotic spiders sent by Hephaestus, God of fire and tools, Annabeth freaked out and screamed at the top of her lungs. This shows that she is terrifyed of spiders. Also, when a spider is in the room with me I run far, far away.

But me and Annabeth also contrast. For example, Annabeth is good with weapons and I am not whatsoever. For example, Annabeth has trained most of her life to fight monsters out in the wild. Where as I have never used a weapon in my life.

These are the differences and similarities between me and Annabeth.

It seems like you share a weakness of Annabeth's --the fear of snakes. You mention that Annabeth uses weapons and you don't. It's pretty common to not share in the fantasy elements of stories. I'm curious how your personality differs from Annabeth's. What kind of person is Annabeth? Is her personality similar to yours in any way?

I am reading Percy Jackson The Last Olympian by Rick Riordan. Comparing Nico and I is not easy. Compering he and I both think 3 headed monsters are cool. We both love the color black. contesting he is a half- blood, I on the other hand am not. He loves going under ground I do not.

I was reading the book If Your Reading This It's too late . I am comparing and contrasting myself to Max Ernest . We are both similar because he becomes a nervous wreck when he gets into things that are dangerous. like when the time he was with Cass and he had to go on a sail boat. But we are different because he doesn't like to get dirty. In the seen, Max Ernest and Cass are at a warehouse. They had to get down low but he just stood behind a very wide tree.

Those are some good questions you have. I think I jotted up the words wrong. Max-Ernest becomes a nervous wreak on spy missions. While me, I am still nervous but not as nervous as Max-Ernest. By " down and dirty" I mean if I absolutely have to get on the ground.

Dear Class,
I am reading The Tale of Despereaux. I am going to focus on Despereaux, the main character. I think Despereaux is Brave. For example Despereaux sat at the princesses bed and listened to the King play music. This is bad because the King or princess could have killed him. For example in the text it says "He strummed the guitar and started to sing a song about stardust. Despereaux forgot all his fear. He only wanted to hear the music. Another reason why he is brave is because when he was being sent to the dungeon, he didn't cry. I think the main reason why he didn't cry was because he didn't know what was going on. This is why despereaux is brave.

sorry. I am going to compare Despereaux. We both love to have an adventure. I love scavenger hunts because it helps you look very closely at things. For example this year you had us find people who has a brother and sister and who has a birthday in October. Despereaux like an adventure were he hast to save people. For example when the princess was missing Despereaux went in the basement to save her. Something that we don't have in common is that Despereaux was put in jail for sitting in front of the king listening to him play the guitar. the reason why he was sent to jail was because he broke the law. I'm sure I will never do that.

I am reading "A Trumpet of a Swan" and Sam,the main character, and O are a lot alike. Sam And Ilove going to camp and we love animals. Also Sam loves birds and I love birds too!! Sorry about the vet part is was an autocorrect. Same and I both love animals and abserving them. He likes them becuase he spends most of his life with them. I like them becuase I think they are cool to watch as they live in there habbit. Sam and I both like animals because animals are a big part in our life.

Dear class,
I am doing good so far in the tournament. In the first round of the main draw I had to play the best kid who was seeded 1. Unfortunately I lost to him 6-1 6-1, but he lives at a tennis academy in Texas and trains 5 hours a day and plays 7 days a week. In the first round of consolation I won my match by just a hair. The score was 6-1 1-6 10-8 in a tiebreak for the match. I am now going to play at 1pm against a kid who lives in Estonia or Ecuador, and after that round I would most likly have to play a kid who lives in Mass that I know. Wish Me Luck!!!!!!

I'm reading Smile and the main character is Raina. Raina and I both hurt our backs some times. I know this because in the text it says "If this keeps up I am going to need a brace for my back". Raina and I both knocked out our teeth. I know this because it says in the text "My teeth!!!". Raina and I have been bulied in school befor I know thi because in the text it says "Thats not the point they humiliated me".
