Spongebob & Patrick

Interesting characters are what make stories really enjoyable to read. Some characters have all of the qualities we wish we saw in people from our own lives. Hey, wouldn't that be interesting!

This Week's Prompt:

If you could chose a character from a book you are reading to be your best friend, who would you chose and why? 

What you will need to do is describe this character's traits and explain why those traits make him or her a good friend for you. As you do this, you will need to support what you say about the character with evidence from the text that shows how he or she acts.

I would choose Rapunzel from ''Rapunzel's Revenge''. I would like to be her friend because she is nice, friendly, brave, and she stops fights from happening. Also her backstory is so sad I think she deserves a friend.

I would say Rapunzel is nice because she will go out of her way to help her friend how is in danger. Also she is brave because she ride a wild hog and stands up to people that are mean and have guns. She can use her hair ( witch is 14 yards long ) to wipe guns out of peoples hands to stop fights.

Kylie is open minded to everything because she always has new great ideas and will be up to try anything. Also Kylie thought of a great idea for her club about an order they needed for a dog kennel, she thought of peanut butter and a dog biscuit cupcake and then the dogs loved it.

5K, Sorry about the earlier response!! If I could have a best friend from the book I am reading it would be Kylie.Kylie is kind and nice because she includes everyone and is always open minded. Also kylie is normally the first one to sighn off on a agreement for a cupcake order because she loves helping people. I don't know about you but I want a best friend like Kylie. Kylie is also loyal and super smart when it comes to baking!!! The final reason is Kylie is a cupcake artist and if I had a best friend that was a cupcake artist she would have a lot to bake, I don't think she would even have a good hour to rest!

Dear class,
I just finished reading the book Percy Jackson and the Lighning Theif, by Rick Riodan. If were to chose one of the characters from this book to be my best friend I would have to chose Annabeth. I would chose her because she is loyal to her friends, Percy and Grover. She showed this by agreeing to help Percy on his quest. Another reason I would chose Annabeth to be my best friend is because she is very adventurous. I know this because she traveled a long way hitchhiking to camp half blood, being leaded be her mother Athena. She set out on an adventure even though she had a good chance of not surviving. The last reason Annabeth would make a good friend is that she is smart. For example, she learned how to read Greek symbols and then taught Percy. This shows she is smart because not many of the other campers at camp half blood don't know how to read Greek symbols. Annabeth Chase from the book Percy Jackson and the Lighting Thief would make a good friend because she is loyal,adventurous, and smart.

Great job supporting your choice of Annabeth for a best friend with many specific examples, Trisha. Like you, I would want a loyal, adventurous, and smart friend. I imagine Percy Jackson would have a very different experience in the story if Annabeth wasn't his friend. What do you think? Also, is there anything that Annabeth has done in the story that you would be hesitant to do with her if you were her sidekick?

I agree that Percy would have a very different experience if Annabeth were not there. If I were her best friend I would question her about why she carries a broze knife in her pocket. Other than the fact that monsters can sniff her out. Instead I think she is brave enough and smart enough to defend herself from harm.

A half blood is a half God and half human. Like Percy is the son of Poseidon, the sea God, and his all human mom, Sally. Also, camp half blood is a danger free camp that is for Demi gods, also known as half bloods. It is protected by Thalia's pine tree. I don't want to go through all the details to spoil it for you. Dear Miss Kimball,

Im reading No Talking by Andrew Clement. I love this book so much.
If I could pick a character in the book who would be best friends, it would be Lindsey. I would want Lindsey to be my friend because she shows that girls can do anything. How Lindsey shows how girls can do anything is because in the book Dave challenged her to be quiet for 2 days and Dave kept saying that she couldn't be quiet. But Lindsey provide him wrong and she made the contest even harder by saying " why don't we make this contest harder by not talking anywhere not even at home." This shows that Lindsey cares about girls rights. I just started the book but I haven't got very far.

I am so glad you love "No Talking"! I've haven't read it all, but based on your description, especially of Lindsey, I think I will. I like how Lindsey is a strong, assertive girl. If I had to choose a character to be my best friend, I think I would choose Peeta Mellark from the Hunger Games. This is because Peeta has shown repeatedly that he is loyal to the end. For example, when Katniss was hallucinating from the tracker jacker bee stings, Peeta stepped in and saved her. Another example is that when Peeta and Katniss were allies, they saved each other. Peeta has also shown repeatedly that he is very very kind.
That is why Peeta Mellark would make a good best friend.

When Katniss was 11, she was starving to death. When Peeta saw her, he felt bad, and I guess compassion took over, so he tossed her a loaf of burnt bread. This may not sound like much, but since food is so scarce in District 12, this is a HUGE help.

This sounds like an amazing book! How are you liking it? I have never read the book myself, so I have some questions. When you say, "Food is so scarce in District 12," what is District 12? Is that where they live? I know that a district is like a town, but I don't understand why it has a number. Are their multiple districts where they are? Also, in your first response, you said "tracker jacker bee stings". What are tracker jacker bees? Were they made up for the sake of the book, or is their an actual bee species called tracker jacker bees? Great job on your response, and I hope that you will write back soon.

Hi class!
I am reading the book The Doll People by Ann M. Martin. I would want Tiffany Fun-craft to be my friend because she is adventurous. She loves adventure and exploration. She's not afraid of going out of her doll house, and exploring the Palmer's house. Also, I would want Tiffany to be my friend because she loves having fun! Tiffany likes playing games and adding her touch of fun to everything she does. Her personality is silly and wacky, and she doesn't like to be serious. Tiffany would also be a great friend is because Tiffany is reliable. In the story, Annabelle and Tiffany decide to meet up multiple times, and Tiffany always shows up. Plus, she promises to keep Annabelle's biggest secret: She has Auntie Sarah's diary! The last reason why I would want Tiffany to be my friend is that Tiffany is fearless. Tiffany is not afraid of The Captain, the Palmers cat. All of the dolls are afraid of The Captain, because he might eat the dolls, but not Tiffany! Plus, when the Fun-Crafts meet Annabelle's family, she offers to help look for Annabelle's Auntie Sarah- who went missing-and she isn't afraid, like most of the dolls. Those are the reasons why I would want Tiffany Fun-Craft to be my best friend.

Tiffany Fun-Craft sounds like a very admirable character: fearless, silly, fun-loving, adventurous, and trustworthy. I like how you added many specific details to back up your description of her. Dear Ms Kimball,
Sorry! I totally forgot to mention that the characters are dolls. The dolls take an oath when they are manufactured that will determine whether they will become a living doll. If they do not take the oath, they will be a regular doll forever. If the doll is seen by a human while they are moving, that means that they have broken the Doll Code of Honor. They will be in Permanent Doll State, which means that they are an ordinary doll forever. So, it is not magic, but an oath that makes the dolls come alive. Sorry again that I did not make that clear.

I am reading the book called Wings of Fire, the Dragonet Prophecy.
If I were to choose a friend from the book, it would be Tsunami, a dragon. She is very loyal to her friends, Glory, Sunny, Clay and Starflight. Another reason why I want her to be my friend is because she is very aggressive against her combatants. She was very angry when she killed another dragon called Gill. She could protect
me from enemies using her fighting skills. The last reason why I think that we should be friends is because she is very nice and I am very nice and this way, we could cooperate more on things that we disagree on. As you can see, she must be my friend because she is very warm-hearted, good at fighting and because she has faith in her friends

Dear Class,
If I could pick any character from the book Percy and the Lighting Thief to be my best friend, the character I would choose would be Mr. Brunner also known as Chiron. I would chooses Chiron because he is so wise. This is good in a friend relationship because he or she can give some very smart advice. They also can help you with problems that you have because they are wise so they know how to fix most of your problems. To me this makes a great friend relationship because when I have a problem I usually ask my best friends for advice. Also Chiron would be a great friend because he is nice and relaxing and calm. This would make a wonderful friend relationship because it will make life so much relaxing because the people you are around will get you to feel calm.

Some evidence that I have from the book is that Chiron is always talking in a peaceful and calm voice. Also Chiron is very wise so most people that are very wise are calm and relaxing because they are like they already went through life so they know what will happen every single step of her/ his life. Evidence from the text to tell you that you Chiron is very wise is because he knew that Percy was a important half blood so he watched Percy. And a few days later Percy comes to Half Blooded camp and is announced a son of Poiseden the God of the sea. Also Poiseden was 1 of the most powerful gods.

Dear Ms. Kimball,
If I got to choose a friend from a book, I would choose Harry Potter, a young wizard. One reason I would choose Harry is because he will do anything for his friends. For example, in "The Chamber of Secrets", Harry saved Ginny Weasley, Harry's friend's sister, from the Chamber of Secrets which held a horrible monster. Harry knew he could die from saving Ginny, but he still went to save her anyway. This shows how brave and caring Harry is. Also, a bully named Malfoy always makes fun of Harry, Harry's best friend Ron Weasley, and Harry's other best friend Hermione Granger. In the all the books Malfoy makes fun of how poor Ron is. But Harry doesn't just stay in the side lines watching. He stands up for Ron and tells Malfoy to shut up. I believe that this is how a good friend should act.

Another reason I would want Harry Potter as a friend is because he cheers you up when he is sad and he helps his friends. Whenever Ron, Hermione and his other friends are sad, he comforts them. He will talk to them and ask if he can help. I would definitely want a friend like that. For example, when Hagrid, the Hogwarts (a school for wizards and witches) gamekeeper found out that his hippogriff (a magical animal that is half bird and half horse) was going to be beheaded, Hagrid was VERY sad. Harry cheered him up and actually stopped Hagrid's hippogriff from being beheaded.

The final reason I would choose Harry as a friend is because he is just simply nice and funny. Harry always makes his friends laugh and smile. He is very thoughtful and thinks about other people, not just himself.

I think Harry would make a very good friend because he will do anything for his friends, he cheers his friends up when they are sad, and he is nice and funny. I mean who wouldn't want a friend like Harry?

Based on what you wrote, I definitely agree that Harry Potter would be an awesome friend. There is nothing better than a friend who would do anything for you, cheer you up when you are glum, and make you laugh regularly. I wish I had Harry as my friend. Ron and Hermione are very lucky.

If you could be more like Harry as a friend, what quality of his would you most aspire to? If I could be more like Harry, I wish I was more selfless, willing to do anything for my friends, even when I'm in a bad mood.

If I could be more like Harry as a friend, a quality of his I would aspire most, is doing anything for my friends. Then they will trust you to always be there for them, and that is a good feeling. Always being there for your friends doesn't always mean fighting monsters. Just being there for them is still the best. If I could be more like Harry as a friend, a quality of his I would aspire is doing anything for your friends. I would help them when help is needed, stand up for them, and "fight monsters." That's what I want to do.

If I could chose a character from the book Scumble to be my best friend, I would pick Rocket. I would pick Rocket because he is loyal. Rocket is loyal because in the text Rocket will never go to the salvage yard without asking or taking Ledge with him because he knows that Ledge loves the salvage yard. Next Rocket is forgiving. Rocket is forgiving because in the text Ledge breaks Rockets pictures, his gardening tools, and his phone. Rocket forgave Ledge for breaking all of his things. Finally, Rocket is compassionate. Rocket is compassionate because in the text Rocket helps Ledge understand how to scumble and guides the way. Also, Rocket says "It takes a lot of strength to show up and be yourself...don't you think. All in all, I would chose Rocket to be my best friend because he is loyal, forgiving, and compassionate.

Rocket sounds like a great friend: loyal, compassionate, and forgiving. I like how you included a quote and so many specific details to describe Rocket. One thing I am curious about is how Rocket helps Ledge "scumble." I'm inferring that to scumble means to learn to use some type of magic. Is that right? Is scumbling something hard to do, requiring a lot of practice and patience?

Scumbling is the word used in this book to describe using powers. Rocket helped Ledge not "stress" and worry about controlling his powers. Scumbling is something that requires a lot of practice and patience and Rocket helped Ledge with these things.

Dear Class,
I am reading the first book in "The Worriers" series. I think a cat from the thunder clan named Graypaw would be a good friend. One reason he is is a good friend is he sticks with his friends. For example, when Firepaw, good friend of Graypaws, was hunting and alone, Graypaw went and joined him. Another reason Graypaw would be a good friend is that he's honest. When Firepaw, main character, got in trouble for talking to a cat owned by a human Graypaw didn't say "he shouldn't have punished you!" He straight up said "that was stupid." The last reason Graypaw would be a good friend is he helps others. For example when Firepaw was new to the clans camp Graypaw showed him around. I think Graypaw would be a good friend because he is sticks with his friends, he is honest and he helps others.

I'm reading The Name of This Book is Secret. The character I would choose as a best friend would be Cass. One reason why I would choose Cass would be she is very active. In other words she loves to walk her dog and play soccer at recess. Another reason why she would be my best friend is she is adventures. This shows that she would want to go and explore in other kind of ways. In other words Cass would want to explore in different places. My final reason that she would be my best friend is that she is brave. In other words from the book, she went to The Midnight Sun resort. She ended up being caught and didn't show any fright even though she felt it. Class would make a good friend because she is active, adventures, and brave.

I am reading the book Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. If I could chose a best friend form the book it would be Harry Potter. I would chose Harry Because he is brave and caring. A way Harry is brave is because when Harry could not get on the Hogwarts train Harry and his best friend Ron decided to fly a flying car to Hogwarts School for Witchcraft and Wizardry. A Reason Harry is caring is on the Hogwarts train Harry bot Ron a cart of candy. That is why I would like Harry to be my best friend.

Dear Ms Kimball
I am reading a book called The Fourth Stall. It's about a kid named Mac who runs a business in the fourth stall of a bathroom. The business is that when a kid wants something he gets it, and he also solves problems like body guarding. I don't want to be his friend because he is involved in gangs and gangs are bad because gangs are made out of criminals.
This prompt was hard for m because I haven't read a book with characters in it that I want to be friends with. I try but I haven't found one do you have any .

I agree, having a friend who is running criminal operation is probably not a wise choice. I'm curious though, why wouldn't you want Mac as a friend? Doesn't he find creative ways of solving people's problems? Wouldn't he do that for you for free if you were his friend?

I agree with Ryan that Wonder is a great book filled with many likable characters. I also like the book, Because of Mr. Terupt, which has many interesting characters in it.

I recommend the Roald Dahl series because he really get's into the character's shoes. Like in THE WITCHES Roald Dahl can really explain how the boy was feeling at the meeting with The Witches. He really get's into detail.So I hope you read some of his books.

I am reading DANNY THE CHAMPION OF THE WORLD. The character I would chose the be my best friend is Danny. The reason why I would like Danny to be my best friend is because he is nice, he likes machines, and likes nature. One reason how he is nice is because he wouldn't frown to any body. Even Mr. Hazell. And the reason why he likes machines is because as he was a kid he played with the oily gears, broken down pistons, and even more stuff. And finally he loves nature because when he was 4 ish his father has taught him every single type of bird, fox, and any other type of animal

Thank you for the comments.But unlike Danny I like nature more than machines. But unlike me, Danny likes machines more than nature because he helped his dad with automobiles since he was 4. The reason why he still likes nature is because even though he fixes automobiles, he still plays with nature in his free time. Adding on to that I think Danny will be a wonderful best friend.

Gregs personality is dull. He dose not really like to do any thing but play video games. He likes to relax and he never goes out side to exercise. When Gregs grade plays flag football in P.E. They always put him on no shirts. He is always scared to get the ball and run.
