Human Rights Project

Students explored human rights in this project. They created a mini book about what they feel should be the top 10 human rights. They researched a person or organization that defends human rights and created a presentation to inform the class. Lastly, students designed artwork to express their vision of what it means to be human.

#1 Equal pay

Imagine you are a single woman and live by yourself.
It could be a struggle to support yourself. Now imagine you
are a man living by yourself. It probably will not be as hard
of a struggle as the woman. This is because many men get
paid more than women when each of them are doing the same
job. It is not fair that a woman has to have a harder life than a
man just because she is not receiving the same pay for the
same job that a man has. That is why I believe we should
have this right.

#2 Religious beliefs

Many people today are being forced out of their
homeland because of their different religious beliefs.
Why should this happen? This happens because some
people do not want to be around people with different
beliefs and they feel so strongly about this that they
force other people to leave.

I like this right because if you were a poor family
and you believed in a different religion than the citizens
of the country, you might be kicked out of your homeland.
Not having the financial means to buy a new home and
being forced to live in an unfamiliar land would be a
significant hardship. A wealthy family would not have
as hard of a time.

#3 No Slaves
Some people like having workers that they do not
have to pay, but put yourself in the slaves shoes! Being
captured and taken from your homeland and then being
sold to a stranger, and having to work for them without pay.
That is your life if you are a slave. Some people say slavery
has been truly abolished but that is not true. There are over
27 million people that are slaves today. There are twice as
many slaves today as there were in the 1800’s.

Personally, I would not like going through all that torture
of being a slave and having no control over my life. When I
think of all the people that go through that torture, my heart
aches so much inside.

#4 Equal Education

Imagine being a girl from Pakistan and not being allowed
to attend school or an inner city child where the education system
does not meet his or her education needs. In both situations, these
children can not support themselves when it is time for them to work.
That happens so much that over a billion adults are unable to read
and therefore unable to work in a job that pays enough to support
them in life.

If I were a girl that was unable to read because I did not
have a chance to go to school or an inner city child whose school’s
goals were to pass children along because they do not know how
to meet the needs of the child, I know that I would not be
successful in life. I do not think that people want to be
unsuccessful in life. They want to be able to support
themselves. I think, every person no matter who they
are should have the opportunity to be truly educated.

#5 Freedom from Discrimination

The color of my skin should not prevent me from doing
or getting things that I want.

I like this right because it tells me inside that it doesn’t
matter what race I am but I will always be treated with respect
and if I am qualified for a job I am applying for, I will have a fair chance.

#6 No Child Labor
Kids do not want to have to work at factories during the
day. If the kid did not go to work the kid would not eat. They
would not be able to go to school, which would lead onto not
knowing how to read and do math. Which would lead to not
being successful in life.
