Science Experiment Excitement

To learn more about why we have weather, students investigated how hot and cold interact with each other. I allowed them to come up with their own experiment where they mixed hot and cold water in two jars. Nothing remarkable happened except we combined water. Lame!

To improve the experiment, students came up with a wide range of suggestions. The ones we decided on were: get hotter and colder water, use food coloring to see the hot water, and make a handle to lower the jar of hot water slowly into the cold water. They worked! Students witness a very excited interaction. You will have to ask them about it to get the full details.

Sand, Soil, Water Experiment

Objective: We are going to heat sand, soil, and water to see which substance changes temperature the most?

Hypothesis: I think sand will change temperature the most because when you go to the beach on a hot day, the sand feels like it is burning your feet off. When you go to the beach on a cold day, the sand will feel like the sand is freezing your feet off.

Materials:
1. Sand, Soil, Water samples
2. Thermometer
3. Cups
4. Heat Lamp

Procedure
1. Put sand, soil, and water in cups
2. Check the temperature of each substance before heating.
3. Put cups under heat lamp.
4. Record temperature of each substance every 10 min. while substance heats up.
5. Turn off heat lamps.
6. Record temperature of ever 10 min. While substances cool down.

Analysis:
We heated sand, water and soil in our experiment to see which substance changed temperature the most. In our experiment, sand heated up the most. Water heated up the least. When we turned off the heat lamp, sand cooled down the fastest. The temperature of the water didn’t change as much. Soil, in both heating up and cooling down, was somewhere in the middle.
We had a couple unusual results in measurement. All of the materials had a point when they cooled down when the heat lamp was on. I think this happened because we replaced the material in a spot farther away from its original spot under the heat lamp. Unlike the time before when we placed the material right under the heat lamp.
Our experiment relates to the science topic we are studying because sand, water and soil is on the earth and the sun heats them up like the heat lamp did in our experiment. In the desert there is sand. The sand does not move that much so the sand sit lying in the sun. The night is the time for the sand in the desert to cool down. Alike the water in the oceans.
The water is moving every second. So the heat is not moving with the water. Also the water makes waves that jump in to the air and then crush down. Once the water attacks heat the heat gets stuck in the water.
