What If...? Homework Project

For this fun, imaginative homework project, students had to write, model, and advertise an exciting fantasy scenario. They choose from a host of topics, everything from "What if you could change an event in history," to "What if your stuffed animals came to life." Students wrote a detailed, well-thought out story, then created an artistic representation of the most exciting scene, then planned a movie trailer advertising their story. The Dog Can Talk! November 4, 2015

“Come inside soon” my mom hollers with her loving voice to me from the front door. I was playing with the frisbee outside with Cosmo, my dog, in the warm breeze of the summer. I cast the neon pink frisbee across the grassy yard as Cosmo darts for it. I wait till Cosmo snatches the frisbee and brings it back to me. Once he gets back to me, Cosmo releases the frisbee on the firm ground waiting for me to take hold of it. I grasp the frisbee getting ready to cast it across the yard again but then something catches my eye. It was a cherry red mustang car driving down the road. I stare as it goes by, while Cosmo waits for me. I stare a little more and while I stare in my mind I think “that is a sick car”. Once the car stops there is a voice that bellows “throw the frisbee!” “I mean bark” the voice was coming from Cosmo!.

I stare at Cosmo in a weirded out face. I think in my head “did my dog just talk”. I ask Cosmo “can you talk?” He replies “um……. yes” in a weirded out voice. My mom utters “Kate it's time to come in”. I walk to the front door and open the door for Cosmo as if he was royalty.Cosmo and I go in my bedroom because we both know it is the spot to go when something urgent. We lay on the pink yogi boe. I ask Cosmo millions of questions such as “ how long could you be able to talk” and “ why haven't you told me”. Cosmo gave me explicit answers for my questions. I was still really shocked that my dog could talk, like really my dog can talk?

I needed to do something to get my mind of the whole talking thing so I went to the park with cosmo. We played with the kelly green tennis ball. Bad thoughts flashed fast in my head such “what if other people find out?” “ what if other people find out and do tests on him?” “what will happen?”. All those thoughts flashed in my head as if it was a flash of lightning. I was scared I didn't know what the future was going to unravel for me, and I definitely can't watch my Cosmo get tested on. I tell Cosmo very carefully “you can not talk to anyone or around anyone except me”. I think Cosmo got the message really quick. We both went home after park. When I got home I was famished I got a quick snack, that was popcorn. I watched tv for about an hour while Cosmo took a nap. We were both exhausted. After relaxing it was time for dinner. We were having chicken and some mash potatoes. I slipped some chicken under my seat to Cosmo. Cosmo always sits under my seat because he knows that I will drop food or give him food. After dinner I took a hot bubble bath, it was so relaxing. Then I got dressed in my pjs then watch Modern Family for a little bit while Cosmo laid down right next to me. It was time to go to bed my dad says. I slump off the couch and into my nice cozy bed. Then Cosmo jumped on my bed a laid next to me. I said “good night” to my father and then drifted to sleep. As I fall asleep I wonder “ what will the future hold?”.

What If

Maggie lay her blue eyes on one of the books in her favorite series. It was labeled “Harry Potter and the sorcerer's stone”. She started to read the text “Nearly ten years had passed since the Dursleys had woken up to find there nephew on there doorstep, but Privet Drive had hardly changed at all.” She sat in a soft rocking chair in her bedroom. In the room there were many posters of things she loved. She had a wolf calendar on her wall, and a giant bed in the middle of her room.

She read in till she saw something in the book. A black hovering liquid was growing slowly from the middle of the book. She heard whispers from inside the liquid. She placed her finger in the liquid and felt her body being stretched and her feet being planted in the middle of a dark bar.

There were long wooden tables with wipes that wiped the table itself! She felt a tap on her shoulder and she turned around to face a man about 8 feet tall and with a giant shaggy beard. He Had a long leather coat practically made with pockets. Along with him was a boy with black hair sticking up all over the place. He also had circle glasses a lightning shaped scar on his forehead. The giant man said “Hello! I'm Hagrid. You must be Maggie. You're the one from the other world right?” Maggie hesitated then replied “Yay, that's me.” “Good.” Hagrid said. “This is Harry. Harry this is Maggie.” Harry gave a shy wave and I smiled back.

They left the bar and was all of a sudden surrounded by bricks. Hagrid mumble“Uh.. This one, no, this one…” Hagrid was tapping bricks with a pink a umbrella. He tapped 3 bricks and all the bricks started to pull apart to a brightly colored street. “Welcome to Diagon Alley.” It was a diagonal street lined with buildings and the street was made of stone. There were happy voices everywhere and everyone was smiling. “We better get shopping!” Hagrid declared.

After getting a rough collie puppy with transportation powers, books and much much more, they finally went to the wand shop. It was an old shop and on the top it said “OLLIVANDERS WANDS” in big letters. They entered and a little bell rang on the door and they heard footsteps drawing nearer. A VERY old man approached them. “Young lady will you please step forward.” Maggie felt a tingle go down her spine as she walked towards Ollivander. He walked around her examining everything from head to toe. He handed her a wand and said “ 12 in., Oak, phoenix feather. Give it a wave.” She started to swish it but Ollivander immediately took the wand. Then said “12 in., Willow, unicorn hair” Maggie swished it again but this time a gold trail led out of it. “This is your wand. After all the wand chooses the wizard!” Cried Ollivander. He did not hear what Harry's wand was because she was so caught up in her own.

Finally! She was at Hogwarts school of witchcraft and wizardry. She walked with her group of 1st years up to a strict looking woman with a tight bun in her hair. “Welcome to Hogwarts School Of Witchcraft and Wizardry. I am Professor Mcgonagall, head of Gryffindor.You shall be sorted into one of the four houses. Gryffindor the brave, Ravenclaw the smart, Hufflepuff the kind, and Slytherin the cunning. When you are sorted into one of these houses, the people in the house will be your family. By doing good you can collect points for your house. By doing bad things you lose points. Good luck! Follow me into the Great Hall.” Professor Mcgonagall said this all is a very thick Irish accent and pursed lips. “Well, come on then!” She shouted As we all clambered after her into The Great Hall.

When they entered it was one of the most beautiful places I have ever been in. The ceiling looked like it was made with stars and galaxies, and the there were four long tables. They each had a color on the table Green, Maroon, Yellow, and periwinkle. There was an aisle splitting two tables apart as they walked through it Maggie heard “It’s Harry Potter! He survived the killing curse!” From whispers in the crowd. They gathered in front of a stool with a shaggy wizards hat on top.

Professor Mcgonagall took a scroll and read “Longbottom, Neville?” A short boy with two buck teeth hoped on the stool. Mcgonagall placed the hat on Neville. Surprisingly the hat started TO TALK. “Hmm….. It sat better be GRYFFINDOR!” Maggie heard a lot of other people being sorted, when all of a sudden she felt a jab in her arm. She whipped around and faced a pale faced boy with white hair“Are you friends with Potter?” He said “Ya…... Why?” I replied “Because he not that great. You can find better frien

What If Project; Job 1

What if you could go back in time and change something CRAZY? Well, that’s exactly what I did.
One day I was just walking in the woods with Tucker, my dog, when he suddenly got off his leash. He started to run, so I ran after him. That’s when I found it. The thing that changed everything. The Teleporter. It was glistening silver in the setting sun, and it felt like it wanted me to go in. It was like it was calling me. Hesitantly, I stepped forwards. Tucker had ran back home. I didn’t have to worry about him.
As soon as I stepped into the big silver box, it immediatly started to spin like a typhoon around me. I remember feeling scared, and thats when everything became blindingly bright. Reflexively, I shut my eyes. But when I opened them, I saw heaven.
Beautiful, lush trees with a stegosaurus surrounding it. I could stay here forev- DID YOU JUST SAY STEGOSAURUS? Well, yes I did. The air was thick with swampy smell. I trekked silently past the eating dinosaur and shoved my hands into my pockets. Then, I felt my phone! I pulled it out and went to my “find my iphone” app to see where I was. Unsurprisngly, it said that I was in the end of the Mesozoic Era.
Just then, I heard something that sounded like it was getting closer. “Wait a minute..” I had said quietly to myself. I racked my brain for anything that I had learned about dinosaurs. The end of the mesozoic era was when the dinosaurs died. FROM AN ASTROID. This is when I started to panic. I could hear the astroid coming closer and closer.
A gargantuan crowd of dinosaurs had crowded curiously around me. I tried to think ofwhat to do. The dinosaurs weren’t expecting the astroid. That’s why they died. But what if they did know….
“All of you!” I shouted to the crowd of dinosaurs. “You are about to die from a massive asteroid that is hurtling towards the earth at this very moment! I think that we can stop it! But I need all of your help!” I shrieked, out of breath.I saw a couple of heads nod in understanding. Now, you can imagine how silly I felt talking to a crowd of dinosaurs. But I at least needed to try and save them. I ushered all of us (there were a TON of dinosaurs) into a semi-circle shape. Then, I told the Pterodactyl’s to go and try to slow down the astroid. Somehow, they all understood me. As the Pterodactyls swarmed upward, I started to think we might have a chance. The Pterodactyls slowed down the massive asteroid, making it a lot easier to stop.
And by some miracle of miracles, we stopped it. All of us, even the T-rex, pitched in and helped. And as we all lowered this astroid onto the ground, we carved our names into the astroid. My favorite by far was a Pterodactyl named Pterry. I wandered back to the teleporter, thinking everything would go back to normal. But I was wrong. I transported back, and when I stopped, I could see my house in the backround, with Pterry standing right next to it.
It turned out that when you change something in the past, it affects the future as well. So that kids, is why a dinosaur is eating lunch next to you.

The Forest Deepening
What If Story

I am a kid named Henry and I love video games and that's how our story begins.
I was sitting in front of the computer starting up a game called The Forest. Suddenly a weird face came up on the screen. It seemed like a boy. It had puffy cheeks and was bald. Almost like a baby. And then he made a fart noise and it all went black.
I started to open my eyes. The light it almost hurt. It was blinding. I woke up to see I was stranded in a forest. Almost like the one in my video game actually it was the one in my video game. I gazed into the sky and said “oh crud.” As I looked into the sky I realized I could see through the computer screen.
I tried to signal my mom through the screen. But then I thought, “What could she do?” So I just did what I would do if I were playing the game. I grabbed the ax they give you at the beginning of the game and looked for some food.
How the game started was you were in a plane crash and you were the only one who survived. So knowing that I looked around the crashed plane site. And found the food that they were serving on the plane and ate it. I immediately felt better and got to chopping down trees. I looked at the survival guide and saw a recipe to make a small wooden cabin. It required 13 logs so I chopped down some trees. It was getting dark, so I had to hurry. I got to work on building the house. Soon I gazed upon my cabin feeling proud about my accomplishment.
I was getting tired and hungry but I couldn't sleep. I just couldn't stop thinking about how I would escape the game. I walked outside to get some fresh air. I could see a person In the woods. Stupidly I signaled him over. But he was actually was a cannibal from a native group. I knew because when I downloaded the game it said there were natives that were cannibals in the description. He started running. I thought he was another survivor but then he hit me. I fell to the ground like a rock.
It was dark. I felt I was upside down. I opened my eyes only to see I was being hung upside down In
a dark cave. They didn't remove my ax from my belt so I threw the ax and cut the rope but my ax was stuck in the rock at the top of the cave. I saw a faint light at the end of the tunnel. I snuck over and peeked from behind the wall. I was astonished. There was a portal and sitting next to it was the baby. But sadly there were also more natives.
I had to come up with a plan and fast. There was nothing I could do. I had to run for it, but I needed some pay back. I ran. They all took out knives. I almost got cut. I dived through the many natives and then slapped the baby as I ran past him and dove into the portal. Suddenly it went black again.
I woke up sitting in my chair just as my mom called, “Dinner!” I yelled, “Coming!” And that moment I swore to never to tell anyone what happened that day. And to live the rest of my life as if it had never happened.

Alive

You go to bed. Three hours later your room comes alive! A toy dinosaur, Rex, jumps off of your shelve, your teddy bear, Dribble, roles out of your arms, Barbie the Barbie doll struts out of your dollhouse, the war that you were playing with, after school, came to life, and your train track starts running! All your stuff animals come to life too, Moo Moo the cow, Arctic the polar bear, Meadow the horse, and Mr. Tie the rabbit. But you stay asleep. Every night your toys go on a mission or an adventure. Tonight they have a very important mission; they call their mission, The Door Mission.

Dribble jumped out of your arms. Fell off your bed and on to the floor. Then Dribble climbed up on to a pile of books that you left on the floor.

“The coast is clear,” roared Dribble!

Then Rex climbed down your shelf, Barbie strutted out of your dollhouse, your army solders stop the war and come marching to the pile of books, your train stoped running, Moo Moo your cow comes sauntering over to the books, Arctic strolling over, Meadow canters over to the books in a pile, and Mr. Tie comes with a bounce in each step he took.

“I have an announcement,” roared Dribble. “We have a mission to find out what the thing called a door is”. “ We will go tonight”. “ Who is with me”?

Everyone started roaring and cheering.

“Okay,” said Dribble.” Barbie get all your hair stuff in a bag”

“Hair products!” Barbie politely shouted.

“Meadow get all the other horses you can find.”

“Got it,” Meadow proudly said.
“Mr. Tie get ready to bounce really high,”

“I can do that for you any time,” beamed Mr. Tie.

“War people get your guns loaded,”

“Yes sire,” shouted the army men.

“Train be on the lookout for any people coming into the room.

“On it,” the train said in a very, very, very low voice.

“Arctic get all the ice you can get.”

“Okay,” pepped Arctic.

“Moo Moo get sum butter so we can squeeze under the thing called the door.”

“I can squeeze under the door?” Questioned Moo Moo.

“Rex get your tail ready for waking.”

Rex roared.

“And I will be me,” roared Dribble.

They got all their stuff they were told to get.

Once they got all their stuff they gather around the pile of books. Then Dribble said:
“Help me thrust the pile of books to the door.”
Everyone forced the pile of books to the door. For about 10 seconds everyone stared up at the door in amazement. Then Dibble roared:

“Rex, Arctic, and Meadow stay with me and Barbie, Mr. Tie, the war people go with Moo Moo. Moo Moo you are going to take your group and try and fit then under the door with your butter, I am going to take my group and try to make a ice tower and have the horses kick foot holes and hand holes in the ice. LET’S DO THIS!”

Everyone started screaming and cheering. Then they got in there groups. At Moo Moo’s group no one had successes squeezing under the door. Also Dribble’s group didn’t have any successes because the horses were not strong to kick through the ice. So Dribble decided instead of using horses to make the hand holes and foot holes he was going to use the war guns to shoot the holes. So the war people line up their guns at the ice and shot many times and that worked. Everyone started to clime up the ice tower but then the train yelled:

“It is 6:30a.m.”

Everyone started to panic. But then Arctic climbed up on the pile of books and pepped:

“Calm down.”

But no one heard her. Then he yelled

“CALM DOWN!”

Everyone stopped in their tracks and looked at him.
“I know you’re scared. But all we have to do is to clean up. Army men get the ice on to the heater.”

“Got it.”

“Umm. Moo Moo, Barbie, umm, and
umm Dribble clean up the butter. Everyone else clean up the stuff that was not where it was before.”

That mission was not a successes but at lest they did not get seen. Plus Arctic learn that her voice should be heard.
