I hope that you have finished a few good books so far this school year. One of the best ways to figure out what to read next is to hear about the books that your classmates love.

This Week's Prompt:
What is your favorite book that you have read (or are reading) so far in fifth grade? Give us a succinct summary and tell us why you like it. Also, if you can tell us where we can find a copy of it, that would be helpful!

Dear class,
I have read almost the whole series of the Kane Chronicles by Rick Riordan and am finishing the last one. I have read the first one and suggest that you read it. There are these kids Sadie and Carter Kane. After some very interesting things have happened they realize that they can do egyptian magic. There is also this serpent Apophsis who is trying to end the word by swallowing the sun. The Kanes and their team are trying to stop them. The adventure continues throughout the other two books. I believe that the first and third book(The Red Pyramid and The Serpents Shadow)can be found in the class library. You will have to look for the second book(The Throne of Fire)elsewhere.

Dear Nadya,

Yo Nadya! I like how you described the snake and the kids, Carter and Sadie. It sounds like a good series and I will be sure to check it out!
I'm wondering what kinds of "interesting things" happened to Sadie and Carter. How did they get to learn Egyptian magic? Have they encountered the snake before?
I am also wondering why you chose the third book in the series. Why not the first or second? What made you choose this book over the others? Does something happen in it that you really like?

Dear Class,
The best book that I have read this year is Middle School the Worst Years of my Life.
I haven't seen the movie that this book is based off of, but I want to. The book is about a boy named Rafe. Rafe feels like middle school is a prison and their are too many rules. So he starts Operation R.A.F.E., which means Rules Aren't For Everyone, where he breaks all the rules and gets in a LOT of trouble. I think the book has really funny drawings. Some of them are teachers that look like monsters and aliens that are yelling. You can find this book in the Kimball Class Library.

Who is "They" and do the teachers look actually look like monsters and aliens?Finally, is Rafe breaking the rules with anyone elce? Dear Class,

One of the best books that I've read in the Fifth Grade and still reading is Out of My Mind by Sharon Draper. Out of My Mind is about a girl named Melody who is disabled. Everyone in Melody's class including some teachers think that Melody isn't smart but on the inside Melody understands everything. In this book Melody wants to prove to people that she is smart so with the help of some friends Melody finds a way to talk. I like this book because it really stays in Melody's point of view and says what she feels inside. I also like the way the author set up the plot and I can't wait to finish it. You can find this book in Mrs. Kimball's class Library in the Realistic Fiction bin.

Dear Class,
My favorite book so far would be “Because of Mr. Terupt,” but it seems that a lot of kids would do that. So, my second favorite book would probably be the “Divergent” series. I like this series because it’s not completely Science fiction fantasy, and has some realistic fiction to it. I also like it because it includes action and adventure. It is about a girl living in a world that is different from our own and is organized into factions. You can find these books in Ms. Kimball’s classroom library.

Could you tell me why you think its Science fiction, fantasy,realistic fiction ,action and adventure? Could you tell me more about these "factions" because I do not know what a faction is could you explain? And what are here feelings does she like it organized as factions or does it make her mad? And whats the adventure like? I think your explaination is awesome and you described it very well! One more question why do you think the title is named divergent what does it have to do with the book or can you not tell me that? If yes look it up!

Dear class,

A book I am really passionate is a book my teacher from last year read to my class. The book is called The City of Ember by Jeanne Duprau. The City of Ember story is well written with lots of similes and other writing strategies to really tell an awesome story. here is a distinct summary of the book, the story is about a girl named Lina Mayfleet and a boy named Doon Harrow. in the story Lina finds a document that her little sister Poppy was eating,( by the way Poppy is three.) and Lina tries to decode it. But she is not alone Doon helps her in the story. Once they figure out it is direction's out of Ember. They want to get out of Ember because it is a small dying city that is in total blackness and the only light they have is from light bulbs. When Doon and Lina find a door they think leads out of Ember they try to get out, but the door is locked when they finally are able to get through the door they find out it is a place where their mayor is hoarding food and drinks all for himself so everyone else will have nothing except for him. When Lina and Doon try to arrest him they end up getting arrested themselves! but they are able to escape and get out of Ember. If you read this story I guarantee you will love it

I think The City of Ember sounds like a good book. Here are a few questions to think about: Is the book in Doon AND Lina’s perspective? I was also wondering if Doon and Lina are friends, siblings or what. How do they know each other? Also, do they live in Ember? If not, how did they get there? Also, I saw a lot of sentences were the beginning wasn't capitalized. Finally, where can I find The City of Ember?

Dear Classmates,

Yo! It's me again! For this RRB I am going to write about one of my favorite books of all time: Book Scavenger by Jennifer Chambliss Bertman. It is about a girl named Emily who moves to San Francisco. She is part of an online game called Book Scavenger. People on the game look for and hide books around the entire country and post it on the website. The website's creator, Garrison Griswold, lives in San Francisco. Then, Garrison gets shot while making a treasure hunt for all Book Scavenger users. When Emily figures out that he got shot, she goes and tries to finish the game for Garrison before Garrison's attackers come after her. I love this book because it is funny, adventurous, and fast-paced, making me not want to put it down. Not only that, but the website is real! If you haven't read this yet you really have to!

Dear Class,

At the very beginning of the school year. I finished the last book in this series and I loved it. The book is called “The House Of Hades” by Rick Riordan. Also, the series is Percy Jackson and the Olympians. I loved this book so much, it really had a great sense of closure for the series. Furthermore, the second to last book in the series was a major cliff hanger so this book was even more exciting than it would have been if the book before wasn’t so mysterious. This book is about 7 demigods who go on a journey to stop the goddess Gaea, also known as the Earth from waking up and destroying the world! The whole series is filled with many adventurous elements of Greek mythology. Each of the demigods play different roles in stopping Gaea and none of them could’ve done it alone. At the beginning 2 of the demigods fall into Tartarus and they have to navigate their way to the doors of death, these doors are their ultimate goal because if they get to the doors they can close the portals and stop monsters in underworld from coming back to the mortal world. Meanwhile, the other 5 demigods travel to Greece to face their final battle with Gaea. Clearly, this is an exciting story and I encourage you to read it if you haven’t already. I own a copy of the whole series including The House Of Hades and I could bring it in if anybody wants to read it. I like this book because I love fantasy, and the adventurous elements Rick Riordan brought in. Lastly, I love this book because Rick Riordan, the author is such a great story teller and all of his books are so elaborate, and detailed.

Dear class

My favorite book series is "Gregor the Overlander" by Suzanne Collins.
I love this series because it is funny, well written ,and has a great story line. For the first book Gregor falls into a vent which really leads into the underland. The people living in the underland bring him on ridicules quests saying that he is the "warrior" that will save them all. The book is really nice and I think more people should read it.

Dear Class,

The best book I have ever read is Warriors: Into The Wild by Erin Hunter. It is about a cat named Rusty who ventures from his life with humans and escapes into the forest where he meets wild cats from ThunderClan. He learns from them that there are 5 Clans: ThunderClan, WindClan, ShadowClan, RiverClan, and StarClan. But ThunderClan has a problem. Noble warriors are dying, and the sinister ShadowClan grows stronger every day. Can Rusty, now known to his Clanmates as Firepaw, stop the evil that threatens the peceful forest?

I loved your description. It makes me wonder what the cats look like-do they have gray fur, blue eyes..? Your descriptive words- noble, sinister, evil, peaceful- makes me want to know more about the book! Do each of the clans have allies? Do they have special powers, like can the ThunderClan control thunder? If not, what is the reasoning behind the names of the clans?

Dear Class,

My favorite book is “Because of Mr.Terupt”. It's my favorite because it has so many different perspectives. I finished the book, and it’s about a bunch of kids who each have their own sad or troubled back stories about their personal lives. Mr.Terupt is a teacher who is new to the school and all the students loved him from the beginning because he is kind and teaches them by adding humor. As he teaches them more, they change and become happier, nicer people. Although the characters always were good people with nice traits. You can find this book in the classroom library or the school’s library, located near the 4th and 5th grade classrooms.

I am still reading this book and it is called because of mr. terupt by Rob Buyea. Probably everyone in the class is doing this book, but I like it too much not to do it. This book by far is my favorite book I have ever read. The book is about a teacher that is new to the school. He is teaching 5th grade and his name is mr. terupt. Each kid has their own chapter and every event that happens they describe it from all of the kids point of view. What makes it funny is all of the kids are completely different. From kids that are smart and kids that are stupid. And this one rookie teacher knows how to deal with all of them. One winter day things all change… I love this book because it is so humorous and immature. The book also has kids that are arch enemies be partners in a science project or something. If you read the back of the book you can’t wait to see what is going to happen.
You will be able to find this book in Ms. Kimball’s classroom in the Realistic Fiction section. And maybe you can find it in the library, but is probably taken because it is so popular.

I am reading possibly the best series in 5th grade. I am reading the Emily Windsnap series by Liz Kessler. The series starts off talking about a girl Emily, who discovers she is a mermaid. She goes on many adventures and trips. But in the seventh book (I am reading) Emily takes a biology trip with her eighth grade class. But then she finds out this trip is much more. Emily and her friend Aron find something. Something that is big and is caught between life…….And death. “look a ship” Aron said “let's go swim for it he continued. Will Emily and Aaron find their way to the ship or will they be caught between eternal life and,.........DEATH. You can find this book and all of the series at the Sherborn library.

Dear class,
I am also reading the Emily Windsnap series. I am on book two, and so far, it's really great. I read book one when I was little, so I forget the story a little. But, I know the main character is a girl named Emily, and she is both a human and a mermaid. This is because her mother married a merman. In book two, Emily Windsnap and the monster of the deep, so far, Emily has just moved to an island where her family can live together. She has been told the dangers of the 'triangle' which, the story hasn't exactly told me what it is yet. On a scale of 1-10, I'd rate the books that I've read so far an 8.

This book series sounds incredible, I would have to argue with you about it being the best series, but that is a conversation for later, and since I haven’t read it I don’t know everything about it so I can’t argue with you anyway. But, in your summary I love how you included dialogue to help the reader understand what was happening in the story, and you really helped me understand the general idea very quickly, so great job on your details. My only question is what specifically do like about the book and/or the series? Next, when you say “big” do you mean that it’s really, really important, or is it just big in size? Also, great job building tension with saying “will Emily and Aaron find their way to the ship or will they be caught between eternal life and,.........DEATH?” I just don’t understand what you mean by that, specifically how the whole eternal life and death concept ties into the story. It’s kind of confusing, but it definitely makes me want to read the book.

Dear Class,
So far my favorite book this Year is, “ Mr. Terupt Falls Again” by Rob Buyea. This book is the sequel to “ Because of Mr. Terupt”. This book is about 7 kids who have a loop year with a teacher in school. These students go through Life changing events that moves all of them closer and closer as a group. In this book you read about seven differents lives, and get to go on a roller coaster of emotions. Feeling what these kids feel, and imagining what it feels like to be in there shoes. I like this book because the author puts in so much feeling and meaning and thought. Also because I like the way the author made it in different points of view so that way you know what's going on in all their lives. I found this book in the Pine Hill School library.

My favorite book is Mr. Poppers Penguins by Richard and Florence Atwater. This book is about a wall painter, Mr. Popper and his family who becomes famous. In the begging mr. Popper and his family is on the edge of being poor. One day Mr.Popper gets a package from admirable drake that has a peguin in it. Mr. popper teaches the peguin to do tricks. Soon the peguin gets sick and they get another penguin. The penguin has babies. Then mr.poppers creats an act with the penguins and becoms famous. Mr. popper and his peguins go on a wild journey through fame and then that goes back to mr. popper leaving his family to make sure that the penguins survive.

Hi, Caroline it’s Emma. I have a couple of questions about your Reading Response to Best Book Ever. One I have a question about what your ending means. “ Mr. popper and his penguins go on a wild journey through fame and then that goes back to mr. popper leaving his family to make sure that the penguins survive.” I don’t get what you mean by, “then that goes back to Mr. Popper leaving his family” Because you never mentioned him leaving his family till the end. Also what do you think is the meaning in this book?(if it has one). Why do you like this book? And who do you think would like to read this book. Is it a book for people who like action?, or is it a book for people who like Romance? But besides those little tweaks, I think you did a great job.

I am doing a succinct summary. I am reading the book harry potter and the sorcerer's stone. I have not finished yet but I'll summarize what I have read. Harry started with his uncle and aunt and his cousin because his parent's died, who were famous wizards. Then a giant from the wizard school hogwarts to him to hogwarts. He is learning magic and even though he's a first year he's on the quiditch team. (First years aren't aloud to have brooms and quiditch involeves brooms.) But, after some reasearch it turns out harry thinks a teacher at hogwarts is trying to steal a very important ________. That is all I have read

Dear Class,

For best book I am doing the Sisters Grimm By Michael Buckley

The Sisters Grimm is about two sisters who lost their parents. And they had to go to an orphanage and were treated terribly. They went to a lot of foster homes but in all of them the parents used them for chores and not love them a bit. And when they did not like it there they would run away. But one day they were being taken to their grandmother's house Sabrina (the older sister) states that her grandmother is dead because their parents told here and Daphne (the younger sister). Then they meat this old lady that Sabrina believes is not their grandmother but Daphne does. The old woman calls them lieblings, gives them strange colored food and Daphne loves the food but sebrina does not eat a thing.

This story is so good you're lucky if you read it and if you like adventures and fairy tales this is the book for you!

Dear Ms.Kimball,

My favorite book of all time is called The Fifth Wave by Rick Yancey and the reason why I would recommend this book is because it's a really heart warming story. But, it is also sad because, well, a lot of people that you will get attached to will die. But onto the summary.

The Fifth Wave is a three book heart touching story that revolves around the main protagonist, Cassy. WARNING, this book does have a lot of characters and will confuse you if your not prepared. So there are aliens who are sending these "waves" of things trying to kill off the rest of the humans left on earth so they can populate it. But, of course, there will be survivors who are to hardcore to be killed and will eventually be rescued by the military. Cassie are on of these people and works with Zombie, Flint, Poundcake, etc. But I feel like this summary was worthless because of how confusing it is in general.

The Fifth Wave sounds like an entertaining book, even if it is confusing. I like the science fiction elements --especially aliens! Is this a post-apocalyptic story? Or more of an alien invasion on modern society?
