Interesting characters are what make stories really enjoyable to read. Some characters are so realistic and have such great personalities that we wish we could bring them to life to be our actual friends.

This Week's Prompt:

If you could chose a character from a book you are reading (or have read recently) to be your friend, who would you chose and why? 

Describe this character's traits using examples from the text. Explain why those traits make the character a good friend for you. Here are some common traits: loyal, funny, kind, adventurous, brave, goofy, competitive, nerdy, smart, easy-going, honest, dependable, and so on.

Dear Class,

Hi! I have been reading a book called El Deafo by Cece Bell, and if I could chose a friend from it I would choose Martha. Martha, in the book, became the main character's best friend, not caring that the main character was deaf and wore a big, bulky hearing aid. I would also choose her because she is funny. I know she is funny because she cracks a lot of jokes and people laugh. If she wasn't funny, then nobody would laugh!
I would also want to be Martha's friend because she is smart. I know Martha is smart because she gets straight As in her tests. If she wasn't smart she would get more Cs and Ds.
That is why I would become Martha's friend.

Dear Ms. Kimball,

Thanks for the compliment! Martha became the main character's friend by asking her, "Hey, Cece (that is the main character's name), do you want to have a sleepover?" Cece says yes, and from then on they become friends, until the time Martha showed her serious side.
One day, when Martha and Cece were playing together, Cece tripped and got a serious black eye. Martha believed it was her fault, and at one point Cece overheats her talking to a classmate that she missed Cece and felt lonely, which is a serious comment. Cece offered to become friends again, said that it wasn't her fault, and they become friends again.

I have read and reared these series a lot and one character is always so happy I would love her as a friend.That is Mildred Hubble.She has a very nice personality.And although she is mischievous her face always has a grin on it.I really want to have her as a friend not just because she is a witch and I love witches but she is just a very nice person to be with.I think that she would make perfect company.I would also like to meat and become friends with her friends Maud and Enid but I'll talk about them later.\

Mildred is very nice and she has lots of friends but I think that I should have said happy instead of nice.She is never sad for long even when she gets into a lot of trouble.She is also trying to do her best but things just seem to go wrong.As for her mischieviousnes there is a lot of it.In the first term she: failed a potion test,made trouble at the halloween festival turned a mean girl called Ethel into a pig [she made fun of her cat] and turned some evil whitches into snails [which is kind of a good thing].As you can see she is very mischievous.As for things I would like to do whith her:I'd like to fly on a broomstick,make potions and spells but most of all just be her friend and have fun with her.

Dear class,

I'm read a book called Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. Our assignment was to think of a character and write why you think he might make a good friend . My characters have to be Fred and Gorge. Fred and Gorge could be my friends because they are extremely funny in many ways. One way is when Fred and Gorge were greeting Harry and they made there mom, Mrs. Weasley, irritated. I know this because in the text it says" "Harry!" said Fred,elbowing percy out of the way and bowing deeply. "Simply splendid to see you old boy-"Marvelous," said Gorge, pushing Fred aside and seizing Harry's hand in turn." Absolutely spiffing." Like to Fred and Gorge I like to use weird vocabulary. They use words like spiffing,splendid, rubbish and more.
This is why I would want to be Fred or Gorges friend.

Dear Emma,

Fred and George (not Gorge, right?) sound like very playful and amusing characters. You said that they made their mom very irritated, which makes them funny. What happens in the scene you described that is so funny to watch or hear? Are they purposefully using weird vocabulary to make people laugh?

Also, as their friend, I imagine you would like to do similar activities with them. Does that mean that you like to irritate your mom to be funny?

I don't like to irritate my mom, but I do want to make people laugh, and be funny. Also Yes, Fred and George Do use Funny Vocabulary to make people laugh, sometimes. I think the funny part to that seen was that Fred and George used funny vocabulary, and they interrupted each other. In my opinion I think that that is funny. Sorry that I messed up in George's name. Sometimes I don't pay much attention. And I forgot to proof read, Sorry

Dear Class,

In the past couple of weeks I have been reading the Mr. Terupt series by Rob Buyea. If I could choose a character from the series to be my friend, I would choose Jessica because she is courageous, kindhearted, and clever. These are good traits of a friend because that means I can trust her. First of all, Jessica is brave because she will stand up for what she believes in, like in the third book, she stood up and was a leader when Mr. Terupt was in jeopardy. Secondly, Jessica is kind because she forgave Luke and Anna for not believing her when she said that nothing went on when she was in the closet. Finally, she is also intelligent because she reads lots of books and likes to. Also, Jessica figured out the Westing Games mystery that occurred in the second book, and that takes a sophisticated person. Thanks for reading!

Jessica is not completely perfect and she has faltered. For example, in the Westing Game competition, she didn’t solve the riddle all by herself. Luke helped her a lot with solving it. That’s also why I like Jessica. She knows that it’s okay to ask for help.

I'm Reading a book called "Return to the Isle of the Lost". If I we're to choose a character from my book to be my friend, it would be Evie. This is because she always makes the best of situations and when you give her a needle and thread the possibilities are endless. Also Evie isn't just talented she can also always make someone feel better about themselves like she did with her best friend Mal when Mal was sad. Also Evie is kind, compassionate, thoughtful, and she is such a ray of sunshine. Evie would be such a good friend too, because I know that she has been through troubles herself, like when she was pressured by her evil mom The Evil Queen so I know if I was sad she would't make fun of me.

I think that resourceful would be a good word thank you for pointing that out to me. Also by "pressure" I meant that in the first book Evie and her friends by order of their evil villain parents they had to go to Auradon to steel Fairy Godmothers wand so that Evie's best friend Mal's mom Maleficent could take over Auradon and control the whole kingdom. So what I meant was that Evie was under pressure by all of her friends villain parents including her mother to get the wand. I hope that this explains to you why Evie was under pressure and I hope that this will help you understand Evie as a friend better.

Dear Class,

I’m in the middle of the reading the first book in the series The Chronicles Of Narnia, and the person in the book who I think would be the best friend for me would have to be the youngest sister Lucy, because she is truthful, imaginative, and brave. Lucy is truthful because she tells her other siblings about her adventure into Narnia and even though they don’t believe her, she sticks with her story saying things such as ”I don’t care what you think ,and I don’t care what you say.” She always sticks to what she says, and never lies. Lucy is also very imaginative because in the book when her brothers, and sister don’t believe her, about her trip to Narnia they think she is imagining and because they have known Lucy for her whole life and, because she is very imaginative so far in the book she must be a very imaginative person. Lastly, Lucy is brave. She is brave because in the book once she finds Narnia she keeps going, she doesn't stop and go back home she keep returning, she has adventures there with Mr. Tumnus, the Beavers, and Aslan, these many adventures take a very brave young girl to indulge in them. All in all, I think Lucy would definitely be the best friend for me in the book.

Lucy is definitely a positive person to be around. I think we are similar in that I can be very imaginative, and for the most part truthful, though not everyone is perfect. In addition, I think we are different especially when it comes to braveness, I don’t think I could ever be as brave as Lucy and explore unknown land alone.

For my friend I would have Dumbledore from the Harry Potter series (I'm reading Harry potter and the Order of the Phoenix). He may be old, but he's a really strong wizard and never lies. He is Wise, friendly, and kind. He would be a good friend because I can trust him. For example, in the book it says that Dumbledore tells the truth about Lord Voldemort, but no one believes him! I think that eventually, Dumbledore will have proof of his return. Also, He is a powerful protector. In the book, it says, "Leviosa!" Said Dumbledore, countering the spell. Harry was relieved to see him."
I also would want Dumbledore as a friend because of his kindness. He is incredibly nice, and kind to any friendly person.
This is why Dumbledore would make a good friend.

Dear Ms Kimball,
Being old is cool. I like old people. Also, Dumbledore is very kind because in the first book, he means to expel Harry and Ron for breaking a ton of rules. But instead, for saving the school, Dumbledore shows his kindness at the end of the year feast, announcing both of their bravery and choosing to not expel them.

Dear Class,
I think Josh from The Other Boy would be a good friend because he is understanding and friendly. In the book, Shane who is the main character, keeps a secret from Josh for a long time, and when he finally comes clean, Josh gets a little annoyed but handles it fine. This shows that he is understanding. The story is in Shane’s point of view, and the book is based of of Shane’s secret. Josh is Shane’s best friend and I think it's cool that Josh hangs out with him, even after the secret is spilled. Shane talked to someone with the same secret as him, and she told him that when the secret slips, some people will not like him anymore. Shane’s girl friend dumps him, and Shane thought Josh would to. But he didn't, and I think that shows that he sticks with his friends, even though they may be different.

I am reading a book called Harry Potter And The Sorcerer's Stone. If I could have any friend it would probably be Hermione because having a friend like Hermione you would learn fast because you’re with someone that knows a lot and is quick to learn. Also say you were in trouble she could get you out of it and what's better than that? Also Hermione is basically always right like when Hermione tried to help Ron and show him what to do and Ron made here do it and on first try she made the feather rise. That's the reason I think Hermione would be a great friend plus here voice is soothing.

Dear Class, I think Calvin from Calvin and Hobbes by Bill Watterson would make a good friend because he is very creative. He likes to imagine he is a dinosaur and eat and terrorize people. He also can also make detailed snow monsters, men, snakes and tiny men. Calvin would also be very fun to be around because he likes to sled down steep hills and doesn't care if he crashes and gets covered in snow. Calvin also would probably go skiing and sledding at burke without decision. That is why I think Calvin would make a good friend.

I just finished a book called Because of Mr. Terupt by Rob Bueya. In the book there is a girl named Jessica. I would want to have Jessica as a friend because she seems loyal, a leader, and just a strait up good friend. Jessica never card about what Lexie was saying about daniel, she didnt care she staill made friends with her and she was happy. I would like this kind of friend because she wont let anyone push you around. Also Jessica almost always had a book in her hands. I would also like her as a friend because I love reading. I would love to bring Jessica to life and has her as a friend.

Sorry for the bad spelling, I must of had a brain fart!
Jessica showed leadership when she stood up for herself and didnt listen to lexi's mean words. I thought this was leadership because it seemed like she wanted the other girls to follow her and stick up for whats right.
When lexi was saying mean things about daniel, Jessica reminded daniel that lexi was being mean. She made sure daniel was okay and took care of her.

If I could choose a character from a book to be my friend it would be Gregor from the book “Gregor the Overlander” by Suzanne Collins.

I would choose Gregor because he is shy like me. He is shy because in the book there are a lot of parts that involve gregor trying not to talk to people. Also, I would choose him because he loves his family and I do too, in the first and second book he falls into the under land trying to save his family.

In addition, Gregor never does things that only benefit him and I like that because if he helps other people then those people will help him and be his friend.

Gregor seems like caring friend. You mentioned that he "never does things that only benefit him." A great word for that is "selfless." It's the opposite of selfish. Although being shy is a common trait in people, sometimes it can be a challenge, especially when it stands in the way of making friends or speaking up for yourself. Do you think Gregor will find ways to overcome his shyness? Is he learning to become more confident?

I agree with you that selfless is a better word.
Also, farther in the books he overcomes his shyness and make a lot of friends.

In addition to what I wrote Gregor becomes nicer (if that is a word) to every one around him because he becomes more accustomed to the under land. For example, He always says "hi" to every one he comes across and doesn't go against anyone anymore because Gregor used to disagree with everyone.

I just finished The Long Hall by Jeff Kinney. If I had super powers to suck some one out of my book it would be Greg. Greg would be a awesome friend because. He is that average mix off everything. He is about 25% wimp,30% dork, 5% nerdy, 30% awesome, And 20% average. These are all the things that make Greg, Greg. To sum it up. He is kind off o scaredy cat. He is also your normal every day guy. And a whole lot of awesome. And that is why I would use my super powers to pull Greg Heffly out of the book.

You asked why he is a scaredy cat and I will tell you why. Through out the book, he keeps running into the same family. He then becomes enemies with the family. The family is the Beardos. When ever they how a run in with the Beardos, he want's to leave as soon as possible. At the fair he saw the Beardos. He went back to the van to escape the Beardos. Thats why he is a scaredy cat. He is normal because he does all the stuff that a normal kid would do. Like play video games, Sleep in late go to school, and the number one thing, obey your parents. That is why I think greg is kind of normal because, he does those through the book. The only one he doesn't do in the book is playing video games. Because they are on a family trip. And he is awesome because, he does epic stuff like run across a highway carrying a squirming pig, look around an entire water park to find the locker key, and get shot in the butt by a paint ball. Those are just some of the many reasons that greg is awesome. I hope that you understand greg better from this. Reading the moment from Alex over, it does add up to 110.

I am reading the book Hatchet by Gary Paulsen. I would want to be Brian's friend because he is so optimistic. Brian has his life at stake and he doesn't say I'm going to die. And just puts one foot in front of the other and keeps on moving. A reason I want to be his friend is because he could teach me how to be optimistic, calm and steady. These are good skills to have in life.

Dear ms. Kimball,
Thank you for your feedback. Some of the skills Brian uses, for example using nature as a resurse. Brian followed a flock of birds and found a bush of berries so he wouldn’t starve. Also, Brian read a lot of books, and that came in handy. The pilot had a heart attack and Brian had to give him CPR. Also, someone had to steer the plane. Brian read books about it so he didn’t panic and knew what to do. I am similar to Brian because he looked for shelter first and if I was in his shoes I would of done that first.

I read a book called Kid Owner and the character I would choose is Ryan because he doesn’t always put himself first like the time he took himself out when he was starting QB because he wanted the back up to get a touchdown. Another trait he has is he doesn’t brag like his “evil la evil” step brother like when his stepbrother won the game he rubbed it in but when the judge said Ryan owns the team he just was proud of himself. Also another trait he has is he has courage he never gives up and he keeps on trying.In conclusion I would chose this charecter.

An example of my not putting myself first like Ryan is when I had a breakaway and I dropped back passed it and my teammate got the winning goal scored the winning goal.An example of Ryan being determined is when he was told by the judge that he had a 10.00 percent chance of winning the team and he was still determined to try to get the team back.

So great to hear from you! I hope you like your middle school teachers and are getting used to all of the class switching. I hope you can come back for a visit sometime and tell me all about it.

My year is pretty good so far. We've been doing some fun activities about the US government to tie in with the upcoming election. We're also going to try to publish a class newsletter, although there is so much to do that it is hard to find time.

I am reading a book called The Summer Of Gypsy Moths, and if I had to pick a character to be my best friend I would pick Angle. Angle would be a great friend to have because she is funny, passionate, and ,kind.Angel is a great friend because she is “out of the box”. most of the time Angle is quiet and not outgoing but towards the end of the book angle is the nicest character that I have ever read about.Another great part about Angle is that she thinks sky's the limit like forensics: driving her aunt's car! “She is very run with the wind”kind of person. Angle is a great person you just have to get to know her.

Dear Ms.Kimball,
When I said "Angle thinks sky's the limit" I meant when her aunt Louise passed away she and her sister were left to survive on their own. So she had to go to the grocery store to buy food. And she's tried to drive her aunts car but it did not turn out so well! And when I meant "that she was nice" is it because that when her aunt passed away she helped her sister Stella survive without her.

I love el defo it is one of my favorite graphic novels. I want to know, how does Matha feel about this giant hearing aid strapped to her chest? Other than that I think you had a very good and thoughtful summary.

Dear class, if I could be friends with any book character, I would choose Turtle from Wings of Fire. Turtle is a Seawing dragon who sort of is the comic relief to the eighth book in the wings of fire series. He is a little shy, and the main character calls him "boring green puddle dragon," just to be a little humorous. He is always making silly little comments, but is also hiding a deadly secret (please do not ask what the secret is, because I do not want to ruin the book for everyone)

Dear Thomas,

I won't ask about the secret that Turtle is hiding. However, I do want to know more about that hilarious description of him as a "boring green puddle dragon." He's a dragon! How can a dragon be boring?! Also, how is Turtle shy in the story? Usually I wouldn't think that a dragon could be shy, but I'm guessing that Turtle is not a typical dragon.

Dear Ms.Kimball, What I mean by without decision I mean without a doubt. Also we both have blond hair, my used to be a mess. And we hate homework and like hot-chocolate. Plus we both like playing in the snow. We both have a cat that we love. Lastly we are very picky eaters.

Dear Ms Kimball, Turtle is a little boring because, unlike the other dragons, he doesn’t talk much, and he is not very active. Also he gets nervous easily, and does not like to talk to anybody that often, although later in the story these details change.
