At-Home Reading Response #8: Inferring

3/5/2017

Authors like to make us think when we read. They don't always make the meaning of their words obvious. Instead of stating things explicitly, authors say things implicitly. While this can be confusing to some readers, finding the hidden meaning in the text can be exciting. It is also similar to what we experience in real life when interacting with other people. It's not always obvious what another person is thinking or feeling.

As readers, we need to make inferences to find the hidden meaning in text.

This Week's Prompt:

Describe an important inference you had to make recently in your independent reading.
To do this:

First provide a little introduction that gives us some background information on the story.
Next, tell what the author wrote that you believe had hidden meaning (as best you can remember, or you can quote it).
Finally, explain the hidden meaning of the text.

Need a hint? Inferences about characters can often be made by how the author describes their body language (eye roll, sigh, slouched shoulders, fidgeting, etc.) or the way they say something (with a sigh, quietly, loudly, while keeping busy, etc).

Dear ms.K,
I am reading a book called The One and Only Ivan. This book is about a gorilia and his name is Ivan. He lives in a zoo and he is learning english but nobody knows that. He wants to talk to the humans but they can't understand him. One girl comes to the zoo and likes to draw the animals. She gave Ivan finger paints and I think that Ivan likes them and is happy about that. Ivan said " It's cool and smooth, like a bananas underfoot. I also think that Ivan likes to play with it and discover new things about it. I think that the hidden meaning of the text is that Ivan is happy.

I think your response was good overall, but, there were a few mistakes that could be easily avoided if you had proofread your work. Also, you didn’t really explain why you think ivan is happy. You just said that “I think that the hidden meaning of the text is that ivan is happy”. So, why do you think ivan is happy? And also, is there a reason that the little girl gave him finger paints? Otherwise, your response was pretty good.

Dear Ms.kimball,

I will be doing a inference on Harry Potter and the sorcerer's stone. In the latest chapter Harry and Ron are leaving from Dursleys to go the Quidditch cup. My inference will be on when the whole Weasley family comes down the fire place in the Dursleys house to pick up Harry. When they first arrive Mr.Dursley looks up and says “What is this?” growled Mr.Dursley.” I think this line of text means Mr.Dursley is mad. I Think the hidden meaning to this text is that in the past Mr.Dursley and Mr.Weasley have not got along. However, when Mr.Weasley bursts through the fire place all the bad memories of him come back into Mr.Dursley's mind.

First of, this sounds like the Goblet of Fire. Other than that you did a nice job but I still have a few questions. It sounds like you made an inference about one thing and found hidden meaning in another. Also, how do the Weasleys come down the Dursleys fireplace? You said, “ when Mr.Weasley bursts through the fire place all the bad memories of him come back into Mr.Dursley's mind.” how does this happen? But overall your response was solid.

Sorry for the misconception with the names of books, I was recently reading Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone. But to answer your question about how the Weasley family got down the Dursley's fireplace, they simply used Floo power. Floo power is a magical dust that can make a portal out of fire. Next, to answer your question about the dark memories of Mr.Weasley, Mr.Dursley had these memories about him because his children and himself have shown up at the Dursley's many times before.

I am reading a book called A Snicker of Magic. It is about a girl who moves to Midnight Gulch in Connecticut. People say that it used to be magic. Here is the text I will be inferring : The bus driver Day Grrisom asks the girl to say hi to her aunt Cleo. But when she does aunt Cleo just says "Ptah" or "Pass me that pack of cigarettes". I infer that aunt Cleo does not want to talk about Day Grissom for a certain reason. That is my inference

Dear Max,
I do not think you understood my response. Felicity the girl moved to a town in Connecticut called Midnight Gulch. People say that Midnight Gulch used to be magic because long ago every family that lived there had their own magic. For example one family could sing up some rain. But that was very long ago. There were these brothers called the brothers Threadbare who played music that made everyone want to dance. But then they had a fight and both brothers left Midnight Gulch. One brother the loser of the fight got cursed with a wondering heart. Ever since the brothers left all the magic disappeared from Midnight Gulch. At least that is what most people think. Felicity is pretty sure that there is still a snicker of magic in Midnight Gulch just playing hide and seek. Also Felicity's family is cursed with wondering hearts because they are descendants of the brothers. Felicity wants to break the curse but in order to do that she has to convince her mom to actually stay in Midnight Gulch. Day Grissom is a person who just happens to like Cleo. They used to be in love but they must have broken up or something so Cleo does not want to talk about him. A snicker of magic is very good book and you should definitely read it.

Dear Class,
I pulled a piece of text from, “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone.” In this part of the book so far Hagrid is hiding something from everyone else,dddd and is about to show Harry, Hermione, and Ron what it is. “When they knocked on the door of the gamekeeper’s hut an hour later, they were surprised to see that all the curtains were closed. Hagrid called ‘Who is it?’ before he let them in, and then shut the door quickly behind them.” I think this shows that Hagrid is obviously hiding and doesn’t want the wrong people to know about it. This makes sense because the curtains were closed, he called “Who is it?” instead of just opening the door, and he shut the door quickly behind Harry, Hermione, and Ron.

Thank you for the compliments. “dddd” was a typo. Some other details from the text that Hagrid is hiding something is that before this happens in the book, this happens: “‘SHHHH!’ said Hagrid again. ‘Listen- come an’ see me later, I’m not promisin’ I’ll tell you anythin’, mind, but don’ go rabbitin’ about it in here, students aren’ s’pposed ter know.’” this obviously means that he’s hiding something that is a secret from students that only certain people are supposed to know, but somehow Harry, Ron, and Hermione find out about it. I can’t go on in more detail because it will give away the part, but thank you for the feedback!

Dear Class,
I was formerly reading Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, and being that my independent reading book is told from the main character, I decided that that was the book to do. Anyway, Harry is leaving the dursleys for good, and everything seems well. But then, Dudley doesn’t like the fact that Harry is leaving. It gets emotional, and this is what he says: “Harry says, “The dursleys think I’m a waste of space, actually, but--” “I don’t think you’re a waste of space.” If Harry had not seen Dudley’s lips move, he would not have believed it.” I inferred that there was some honest and heart-touching emotion between Dudley and Harry. The hidden meaning is that Dudley doesn’t like that Harry’s going. I hope you enjoyed reading.

Great response! I most definitely enjoyed reading. I like how you used spicy vocabulary, like "emotional" and "heart-touching" in your response. I just have a few questions about your response.

The first is, why do you think Dudley says that Harry is not a waste of space? What makes Dudley say that? Why do you think the author makes Dudley show emotion like that?

The second is, what does the author mean by, "If Harry had not seen Dudley's lips move, he would not have believed it"? Why did the author write that and not something else?

Thank you for the feedback. First, I think Dudley shows emotion like that because the author made this the last goodbye. Second is that Harry and Dudley have always been enemies. their backstory makes it seem impossible for Dudley to say that.

Dear Ms. K.,
I am doing my response on Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. So what's been happening is Harry is at Privet Drive and he's walking with his cousin, Dudley and these messed up creatures called dementors attack them. Harry is able to defend them both with magic, but underage wizards aren't supposed to use magic outside of Hogwarts. Then Harry's old cat loving neighbor reveals herself as a Squib, which is a pureblood that doesn't have magic in them. Harry gets taken away by some of his professors and discovers that they have been hiding a lot from him. Harry starts yelling at his two best friends, Ron and Hermione. So I’m guessing that the hidden meaning in him yelling and being kept secrets from him is that he's pretty mad and frustrated.

I liked your inference on Harry Potter and The Order Of The Phoenix. I had a question about your summary though. When you said "Harry is at privet drive and he is walking with his cousin, Dudley the demeanors attack them." Why did they attack them?
Next, the other question I had was: What is a Squib and why did Harry get in trouble for finding one? Overall I think you had a good inference. My final question to you is why did Harry get mad at Ron and Hermione. I challenge you to find the deeper meaning.

Thank you for the feedback. I am not exactly sure why the dementors attack Harry probably because of you-know-who. A squib is a pureblood that is not very magical and Harry didn't get in trouble for finding one. Im sorry if I did not make that clear. Harry got mad at Ron and Hermione because 1 they did not send him any owls and 2 they had kept the Order a secret under Dumbledore's orders.

I read the book "Eldest" by Christopher Paolini. In the book the main characters name is "Eragon" who is a dragon rider. When Eragon goes to train in the land of the elves, he "snapped" at his mentor when he got mad at him. I inferred that Eragon was mad because people snap at other people when they are mad.

Dear Class,

This is my RRB. This is from the book Ingo by Helen Dunmore.
In this spot in the book, Sapphire (the main character) is talking to her brother Conor when he spotted him talking to a stranger. The quote is: " 'Who was that?' I ask, not expecting him to tell me. Conor goes pale. 'Nobody,' he says. Side by side, we walk up the sand to our house." I think that Conor was lying and trying to hide something, because if he wanted to tell Sapphire, he wouldn't have said "nothing". Also most people if they are lying go white as a ghost, which means Conor was probably lying.

You gave us a good example of an inference. I agree that Conor was probably lying. What do you think he is hiding? This example makes me wonder who the stranger was, and why Conor wouldn’t share more information with his sister. I think it would be helpful if you gave the reader a little more info on Sapphire and Conor's relationship. This would tell us if they usually share secrets. Also, how old are they? Lastly, I think it is an assumption when you say most people turn white as a ghost when they lie. Maybe he is scared or nervous.

I am doing m inferance from the book Escape from Mr. Lemoncellos Library and on the character Mike, Kyles older brother. In this scene Kyle takes a shortcut through the window and beets Mike in a game. This is my line and inference "I can't belive you won!" moaned Mike. Who wasnt used to losing anything."
I think this shows that Mike is clearly annoyed, and slightly mad at himself for letting his younger brother win.

For my inference I pulled one from Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone. Right now the first years have just arrived at Hogwarts and Draco Malfoy is talking to Harry here is their conversation up until where I made the inference. “You’ll soon find out some wizard in families are much better than others, Potter. You don't want to go making friend with the wrong sort. I can help you there...I think I can tell who the wrong sort for myself thanks...I'd be careful if I were you, Potter, unless you're a bit politer you'll go the same way as your parents. They didn't know what was good for them, either. You hang around riffraff like the Weasley and that Hagrid, and it'll rub off on you.” Then, is the part where I made an inference here is the bit of text. “Both Harry and Ron stood up. “Say that again,” Ron said, his face as red as his hair. This shows that he is either embarrassed or angry, or in this case most likely both. It makes sense because Malfoy who has already been provoking him on this topic called him “riffraff” and the “wrong sort”, so clearly Ron is both angered at Malfoy for insulting him and his family but he is also embarrassed that he thinks that. That is the hidden meaning in Ron's body language in the text.

Dear, Emma,

Thank you! First, Malfoy doesn’t necessarily have anything to dislike Ron for, but he thinks that all wizards who don’t dislike muggles (people who aren’t magical) are bad people. This however is not true. Ron likes muggles so Malfoy doesn’t’ like him. Also, their parents know each other from work and dislike each other as well and that’s why they picked a fight having just met. Hagrid is a good person, Draco Malfoy doesn’t like him either though because he likes muggle. Clearly, there are not a lot of people that Draco is friendly with in this story. If I was in Malfoy’s shoes I wouldn’t do something like that, but I guess he might do it because he wants attention or doesn’t have high self esteem.

I have just started reading a book called “Fish In A Tree,” by Lynda Mullaly Hunt. So far, I’ve learned about a girl named Ally. Ally is almost at the end of the school year, and refuses to write her letter to her future teacher. Here is the line I have pulled from the book that I’m inferencing from. “The back of my neck heats up./ I don’t get it. She usually lets me slide.” I think in this thought Ally is a little nervous. I know this because, most of the time when you get nervous you all of a sudden get hot. And in that snip it of that text it says that ally’s neck heats up. This is why I think in Ally’s thought, that she was nervous.

I like your inference, you gave good background information, and you found a piece of text that I think does have hidden meaning. Furthermore, I agree with you in saying that Ally would most likely have been nervous. About your quote from the text, who is the she that usually lets Ally slide? What does “she” usually let Ally slide from doing? Is it a teacher who’s kind of a pushover? Why does Ally not want to write the letter? If you were Ally would you refuse to write this letter or would you oblige, if you did refuse to write it would you get nervous?

To answer your first question, usually her teacher. How Ally can get away with this is Ally can distract the teacher by asking another question to change the topic. Then the second questions answer is homework assignments. To answer your third question, no the teacher is not a pushover she just really wanted Ally to do her letter. The answer to your fourth question is that Ally does not know how to read and since she doesn’t know how to read it’s very hard for Ally to write. The reason this is bad is because none of the teachers know this. To answer your last question I think I would oblige. The reason for this is because I really don’t want to take in the guilt of not doing the letter.one other reason is I don’t think I have the guts to say “no” right to a teacher's face.

Dear Class,

I am reading "Joey Pigza Swallowed the Key". Basically in the beginning Joey got in trouble for responding to all of Ms. Maxy's questions "Can I get back to you on that." So Joey has to sit in the hall. But Joey starts acting out what he saw on T.V.. What Joey acts out is the "Tasmanian Devil" spinning around like a tornado. he does by wrapping his belt around his waist, and tugs it real hard. Joey said in the book that he starts spinning but I don't really think thats possible. That is some hidden meaning I think at least that is in "Joey Pigza Swallowed the Key"

I am reading "The Land of Stories" by Chris Colfer.
This book is about a girl named Alex and her brother, Conner, who receive a mysterious book from their grandmother. I have not read farther than this. The sentence I chose was when Alex and Conner's Grandmother visits for their birthday.
"When do you leave?' Alex asked her grandmother.
'Tomorrow," she said. 'As soon as I take you to school.'
The twins' postures sank a bit."
this shows that Alex and Conner are disappointed.

Dear Class,
I am reading the book Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix by J.K. Rowling. So far Harry has done a lot of things and I do not want to go through all of them. The part that I found hidden meaning is when. I read "Professor Trelawney slammed a copy of the oracle down on the table" I think this means the professor is mad because nobody slams something down for no reason. And I also know people usually do physical things when mad instead of a mental breakdown or crying. That is when I found hidden meaning in my book.

Thank you for the complement. To answer your first question, The professor slammed the oracle on the table because she was mad at the high inquisitor of Hogwarts, professor Umbridge, for saying she isn’t very good at what she teaches. And to answer your second question, I did not really mean to say that people only get physical when they are mad but really only mad people get physical. Now you may think that sad people do that to but that is when it is a combination of sadness and anger or sadness and frustration. I think that would answer your questions.

Dear Class,

In the book I read, “Shadow Children”, the main character is a boy that is a third child. (Third children are against the population law. There are only supposed to be 2 kids per family.) So all third children were supposed to hide. I pulled a piece of text from one paragraph, the author wrote, “His heart was pounding, sweat coming down his cheeks, looking beyond the horizon, totally frozen in place.” This lead me to infer that this third child was afraid. The kid was outside in the open, where others could possibly see him. That's why he was so afraid.

I'm reading Home of the Brave. What's happening is that this boy named Kek has just moved to America from Africa. He is waiting for his Mother to come and join him. They were separated when the refugee camp was attacked. The inference I'm using is, "Mother will come for me. . . she's fine," I think this means that inside Kek thinks his Mother won't come but he still has hope. I think this because every time in the book when they mention Kek's mom all he says is that she's coming and that she's fine. this is my inference.

I think Kek mentions these things because even though he may not have hope he hasn't excepted the fact that he may never see his mom again. Last, if I was Kek I would want someone to make a more happy inference like anyone would, but to be realistic I would want someone to make a more concerning inference to see that someone cares. But that's just me personally. I hope this answers your questions.

In the book, I’m reading, the main character goes and steals a diamond Ring from a shop and gets caught by the police. When he gets caught, the author describes him as a very red tomato. This means that he is humiliated that he is caught. He was also humiliated because everyone was looking at him and taking pictures of him. I think he was humiliated and not mad because he was not a bad person, he just wanted to sell the ring so that he could afford feed himself and his dog.

I am reading a book called Wings Of Fire And The Brightest Night at the moment Sunny (A sandwing)has gotten captured and when she is going in she see's one of the sisters of the thrones brother named Smolder (who's also a sandwing) and Sunny is just meeting Smolder and Smolder says ""Who are you?" he asked her,and she liked that ,too, that he spoke directly to her instead of over her head as though she was nothing but a piece of treasure." I chose that because it compares Sunny to a piece of treasure which I thought was very interesting. And I think the hidden meaning is that a "piece" of treasure is not good enough and Sunny is always seeing people look "over" her head.

Dear class,

I am reading the Tale of Deasperaux. There is a character named Miggery Sow. She has hearing problems from clots to the ear. When she is a castle maid, the head maid has gave her every job, but she couldn't do any of them except one. Bring the jailor his lunch. Mig has to go down into the dungeon to bring the jailor his food. I think Mig is going to get lost in the dungeon because of her hearing problems. Can't wait to see what happens to Mig!

I liked your response. The difficulty I had was that this didn’t seem as much of inferring but it seemed more like a small summary of Miggery Sow. Was there anything else in the book that had more deeper meaning? I think you got the first step of adding background information but just needed a little more of the other two steps of finding hidden meaning and explaining the hidden meaning.

I think that the "stranger" may have told him something that he didn't want Sapphire to hear, because when people go on the defensive and say "Nothing" or something like that, they might be scared or nervous for that person, and Conor may have been scared to tell Sapphire what he heard. Also Conor is Sapphire's older brother - he's 16, and Sapphire is 12. Before this scene in the book, Sapphire says, "Conor is never secretive with me; we like to share secrets." So that is more evidence why I think Conor is hiding something that is important or is something that he believes Sapphire shouldn't hear - the odd behavior.

yes my inference is kind of a re-telling. It was mostly to make sure the class knows Migs disability. I think the hidden meaning is in some way Mig might end up helping Desperaux out of the dungeon. All Desperaux wants is to have a happily ever after with the Princess Pea. If Deasperaux can get Mig to take him out of the dungeon. Mig can deliver him to the Princess Pea. So the hidden meaning might be nobody is useless. The head of the maids describes Mig as useless. Mig could still be in use to Desperaux.

Dear Thomas H,

It is a very exciting book. First, the main character is Luke, and he hates hiding and just wants to go in the public and run outside and venture. He’s adventurous, playful, and always tries to make the best of things. He lives hidden in the attic and watches the outside world through a vent. The only company he has is his family. Sometimes he tries to look out a window at his neighbors, but his dad gets mad because he worries that someone may see him. After watching the neighbor’s home, over time, he discovers that they also have a third child. He counts the people as they leave the house and one day they turn off the television and leave and then another person inside turns it back on. He decides to sneak over there to meet the third child, a girl, and they become friends. After a short time of visiting her every day, she tells him her plan to come together with others and confront the government to allow third children to be legal once again. In the end, the boy decides not to go with them because he feels it is too unsafe, and sadly the girl and the others in the group are killed by the population police.

That you for your feedback. To answer your first question I think Ivan is happy because he likes painting and craft like things. Also the answer to your second question is that the girl gave Ivan the finger paints because Ivan likes to paint. Also, she give Ivan paper and crayons a lot and they color different shapes around the dome.

Dear MS Kimball
In the book, Ginger Pye, the main character’s (Jack) dog gets stolen. Jack searches everywhere and when he comes to his classmate’s Wally’s house he says to jack that he can’t be there and he has to go away because he has a big dog.
Here is my inference
Jack comes to Wally’s house and asks “Have you seen my dog?” but then Wally replies “go away… I have a big dog”, but Jack hears a faint bark of a small dog in the distance. I think that Jack is inferring that Wally stole his dog.
