Hi Class,

This week's in class reading response blog is by the same author as "Slower Than the Rest." The story is called, "Boar Out There," by Cynthia Rylant. You can find it posted on Google Classroom. Go read it!

Dear Class,

Hi, it's me again! For my In-Class Blog I am doing a Great Description.
A great description I found was at the climax of the story. The description was, "The boar's large gray-black body shivered as he waited just behind the shadow of the tree Jenny held for support. His nostrils glistened, and so did his eyes; but astonishingly he was silent. He shivered and glistened and was absolutely silent!"
This description was describing the boar and his surprising qualities. The fact that he was silent was said twice, as if to exaggerate the fact that such a terrifying and fearsome creature was so silent! I love this description because it describes the important feature of the boar, and cuts out all the not-important details, which is unlike a lot of descriptions I have read.
That is my In-Class Reading Response.

Dear Class

(this is a message inspection)
Boar out there is a nice piece of writing and I liked it. I think the meaning of the story is that if people are big and strong they are soft and fragile on the inside. This is explained when Jenny thinks that the boar is very vicious and ugly meaning that she thinks the boar is big and strong. But when Jenny enters the forest and finds the boar it is really beautiful and i afraid of blue jays and little girls proving that the boar is not as dangerous as people think it is.

Dear Class,
I found a great description on page 2 of Boar Out There. Here it is: “ She imagined him running heavily through the trees, ignoring the sharp thorns and briars that racked his back and sprang away trembling. She thought he might have a golden horn on his terrible head. The boar would run deep in the woods, then rise up on his rear hooves, throw his head towards the stars and cry a long, clear, sure note into the air. The note would glide through the night and spear the heart of the moon.” I think this description is AWESOME because it has so much detail and elaboration. I think the author wrote it because she wanted you to be able to hack into Jenny’s brain and know how she thought the boar looked like.

Dear Class,
For this reading response blog, I’m writing a message inspection for the story “Boar Out There” by Cynthia Rylant.
I think that the message of this story is not to be afraid of the unknown. I think that this is the message because in the story, Jenny goes looking for a supposedly, “Terrible and golden horned” boar. But, when she finds him, it turns out that “his ear are caked with blood” and he’s afraid of her! Lastly, I think that this is the message because a whole town was afraid of a boar, and it turns out the boar was afraid of a little girl.

Dear Class,

I think Jenny sounds rather paranoid. She is afraid of a PIG. But that is only in the beginning. In the climax where she sees the boar firsthand, she feels sorry for him, since he is injured and living a life of fear. Now I can tell that Jenny has a strong love for animals.

Dear Class, I am writing a great description. A part of the excerpt of Boar Out There by Cynthia Rylant that I found descriptive is when the author described the boar. “Jenny matched his silence, and her body was rigid, but not her eyes. They traveled along his scarred, bristling back to his thick hind legs. Tears spilling and flooding from her face, Jenny stared at the boar's ragged ears, caked with blood.” I like this description because it not only describes what Jenny was looking at but it also describes how it was “scarred.” or “caked with blood.” That is part of the excerpt that I found descriptive.

Dear Ms.Kimball,
I am doing a message inspection. I think that the message of the story is that even if something seems terrifying it really isn’t as terrifying. I think that because all the people don't like the boar or are afraid of him. Except Jenny. Jenny isn’t scared of the boar. She actually wants to see it and she keeps saying “Boar out there”. Than Jenny actually goes into the woods to find the boar. When she sees him the boar gets very scared. So I think the message of the story is as I said above. The people are scared of the boar but they have never seen him and don't know that he is afraid of them and the blue jays.

Dear Ms.Kimball,
I’m doing Great Description. A vivid word I found is “Jenny could sense her ears tingle and fan out as she listened for thick breathing”. I thought this sentence was unique because she was explaining what was happening with her ears even though she couldn't see them. Which I thought was cool because it's something what most authors wouldn't do because sometimes people focus more on inner thoughts and emotions.

Dear Ms.Kimball,
I have created a character study I hope you like it.
Jennie sounds like a very quiet and modest girl she is very grounded and connected to nature. When she came across a wild boar that everyone in her town is afraid of. Jennie decides to go out in the woods to see this creature.When she comes across the the bore the author quotes ¨ the bore ran past her¨ past her… I think she cares about this creature and feels bad for it.Because in the text it describes that ¨she stared at the bore matching its silence tears dropped on the leaves next to her. The bore had ears caked with blood¨. You definitely have to be a caring person to have that much worry about a creature. In conclusion I really liked that reading response.

Dear Class,

This is my Message Inspection. In Boar Out There I realized a certain piece of text which was “ But mostly she is sorry that he lives in fear of bluejays and little girls, when everyone in Glen Morgan lives in fear of him.” This piece of text made me think that maybe this Boar is ugly on the outside but lives in fear on the inside. I wondered if maybe the people of Glen Morgan misjudged this Boar and maybe he has a heart. So since this piece of text supports the fact that people judged the boar by the way it looked, I think that the message of the story is don’t judge a book by it’s cover which means don’t judge somebody by the way they look. To support this I also found this piece of text, “High in the trees a bluejay yelled, and suddenly, it was over. Jenny stood like a rock as the boar wildly flung his head in terror and bolted past her.” This supports the fact that this boar was more scared of Jenny and the bluejay than Jenny thought she was of him. So this is why I think the message of the story is don’t judge a book by it’s cover. And that’s my message inspection.

Dear Class,

In “Boar out there” The character Jenny was really intriguing. She is really curious about the boar. She is so curious. That she goes to find the boar. Then she came face to face with the boar. The book explained how the boar looked like. His ears were caked with blood. He had scars all over his back. The boar is also a he. In the last sentence of the third paragraph said. “The only thing she could here was his slow breathing.” The fact that Jenny would se that horrific thing for curiosity. It also explained that she would do it again. The text said. She always twist a piece of grass in her mouth and says”Boar out there.” I could just picture her there with the boar with all the descriptions from the text . The wet leaves, her tears dripping down, the battered boar, the look on her face. This Is why I think that Jenny is a curious character.

Dear Ms.Kimball,

“Boar out there”

Jenny is a girl who here's a boar at night and imagines him as a boar with a golden horn. I think that she believes in alot and has a great imagination. Outside her house is a big black dodge which blocks her and a dangerous forest surrounded with poison ivy. Next she goes to a tree near the forest. Later on she hears hoofs walking along near the tree she knew it was the boar. She went completely still but then it rounded the corner it was not what Jenny thought he was like no golden horn just a normal horn and torn up ears. As you can see Jenny is brave because she did not run for dear life. Also I think she is smart because she did not move did not yell or scream and tried to stay calm. Finally I think she is very caring to conclude she was worried about the boar for being scared of blue jays and scared of her and all people when people thought he was not scared of them they were just scared of him. But turns out he's probably more scared of people than people being scared of him.

I am doing a Message Inspection. I believe that the meaning of the text is that you should always learn about someone or something before you judge it. The last paragraph of the text is “But mostly she is sorry that he lives in fear of bluejays and little girls, when everyone in Glen Morgan lives in fear of him.” This means that everyone in Glen Morgan including Jenny judged him before they meet him. Jenny judged him when she thought “She imagined him running heavily through the trees ignoring the thorns and briars that raked his back and sprang away trembling. She thought he must have a golden horn on his terrible head. The boar would run deep into the woods, and rise up on his rear hooves, throw his head toward the stars and cry a long, clear, sure note into the air.” Jenny goes on to explain how horrible and terrifying the boar is when she hasn’t ever seen him and nobody in Glen Morgan has! Then when she sees him she finds that his ears are ragged and caked with blood and when he hears blue jays he runs in terror. Clearly, Jenny and all of Glen Morgan judged him before they ever saw, or meet him, and it turns out that he is not a terrible horrifying beast but a scared, timid, ragged, animal. So you should always meet someone, or learn about something before you judge it.

Dear class,

For this in class reading response blog I’m doing a character study, for this character study I am doing the boar. I think the boar is cowardly, I think the boar is cowardly because when Jenny is in the woods and meets the boar she is frozen in fear, and the boar could have rammed her, he could have speared her, but no the boar just stood maybe evan more scared of Jenny than she was of him. Then the boar ran away. The boar also had raggedy, torn and bloody ears so the boar had to have had some sort of accident happen to him, and it must have been recent for there still to be blood. Boars are very tough creatures so for it to be scared of a little girl, it had to have a serious accident to be that scared, or the boar was just like that.
That the best I think I can pull of a personality out of the boar, because the story isn’t the boars point of view.

Dear class,
I am doing a great description.
The description I chose is when Jenny was going through the woods looking for the wild boar.
“Deep in the woods she kept her eyes to the sky.” This is a confusing phrase. I inferred that she was scared to look ahead in case of the boar being in front of her. I am also inferring that she is looking up at the sky, because no human has eyes on the top of their head.
I am wondering why she is scared of the boar because in the beginning of the chapter she would hold grass in her teeth and try to track it to her. I am also wondering why she is keeping her eyes to the sky because she might trip if she doesn't lookout where she is going. I like this description because it can describe emotions and feelings. It also gives you an image of what she is doing.

Dear Ms.K,
I am doing a Great Description. I found a vivid description in the text that I thought it was very creative. This is in a part of the story where a girl named Margaret is imagining a boar that is really scarey. They haven’t seen it before, no one has gone past this doge car. The author wrote “ Throw it’s head toward the stars and cry a long, clear, sure note in the air”. I think the meaning of the quote was the boar would jerk it’s head to the stars. The boar would make a loud racket and howl to the stars and the moon.
I think the author wrote that sentence really well because they didn’t say they would picture a boar howling at the stars.

Dear class,
I just read the excerpt from ‘Boar Out There” by Cynthia Rylant, I chose to do a Great Description. The Excerpt I choose was “She imagined him running through the tree’s, ignoring the sharp thorns and briars that raked his back and sprang away trembling. She thought that he might have a golden horn on his terrible head”. In this summary Jenny imagines the boar in the woods being all tough. I think the boar was tough because the author wrote Jenny thinking, the boar ignoring the sharp thorns and briars.
To point out what the author did well writing, I think he made the setting clear. What I mean by this is that he puts in details that make me feel like I’m in the woods. These small details are very subtle but make the setting clear. “ Running through the tree’s” or “ ignoring the sharp thorns and briars” . These subtle words really helped me feel like I was right next to the boar. These descriptions are why I like this excerpt from, ‘ The Boar Out There’
