Dear Students,

You did well last week replying to my "Test Post." Now we'll start the actual "Reading Response."

Each Sunday, I will post a question or prompt for each of you to answer about your independent reading. It's my way of getting inside your brain to learn how you are making sense of your own reading. It also helps me make sure you are doing the assigned reading at home.

By Friday of each week, you will need to respond to my question or prompt by commenting on my post. Make sure you have read the Guidelines for Commenting so you know the requirements for appropriately posting a response. It should be easy!

Well, let's get started!

The Week's Prompt:
Tell me what your book is about.
Write a brief summary of the book you have been reading at home. Help me follow what is happening in the story by describing characters, the setting, and the plot as though I have never read the book. Keep your summary simple and clear.

Dear Class,
I am reading Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. It's really good! In this book of the Harry Potter series, the world of magic is in disbelief. Lord Voldemort--or 'you know who'--has been unleashed, and the wizard government, the Ministry of magic, doesn't believe Harry and Dumbledore's statements. During the horrific summer, Harry and his cousin, Dudley, are attacked by Dementors, and Harry is forced to use magic to defend himself and his cousin. But this gets Harry in trouble and almost expelled from Hogwarts, the wizard school. The part where I am is Harry has just gone to bed on his first night back at Hogwarts. He is feeling furious because one of his friends stated he's lying about Voldemort, right in front of his face. This Harry Potter book is defiantly recommended, along with the entire Harry Potter series.

Wow! Excellent summary! You did a great job giving an overview of the plot while also providing enough detail for someone who hasn't read the book to follow along. I like your use of commas to add information about a character or a place.

You wrote, "This Harry Potter book is defiantly recommended." I think you meant to write "definitely." Hehe. Do you think someone can "defiantly recommend" something? I ask to play with your mind.

Anyway, do you think the Harry and/or Dumbledore could do anything differently to get people to believe them?

Dear Ms. Kimball,
Sorry about the spelling error. I did mean "definitely". Anyway, I appreciate the question. I think that Harry and/or Dumbledore could prove to the wizard world that Voldemort is back by finding more evidence, more people would realize that he's back. Also, they could find a way to draw him out of hiding so he would be forced to make a different move than hiding.

Dear Class,

At home I'm reading the book "The Tale of Despereaux". It's about a little mouse named Despereaux who is born with big ears and is full with curiosity. Desperaux lives in a castle with his family and is trying to learn the mouse ways but just doesn't seem to get it. Despereaux also has a love to read and one day his imagination got him in trouble with the Mouse Council. Now the Mouse Council is determining what will happen to Desperaux. That's all I've read so far and I can't wait to finish.

Good summary of the start of the story. I like how you described Despereaux as "full with curiosity" and unable to get the ways of being a mouse. Can you give an example of him being curious and an example of him not getting the "mouse ways"? I'd love to hear more about him!

I would love to give you an example of that. When Despereaux's sister Marlough was trying to teach Despereaux how to nibble on corners of pages in books, instead of eating the book he started reading the book so he didn't understand why mice would eat the corners of pages. Thank you for asking me for an example so I could tell you more about the book. I hope that this helped you understand Despereaux better.

Dear Ms. Kimball,
I am reading a book called Bed Knob and Broomstick.The 3 main characters Carey Charles and Paul go to there aunts house.Their neighbor Ms. Price turns out to be a witch.She gives them a magic bed knob.When put on the bed it can take take them any place they wish to go.They have lots of fun and dangerous adventures and even have to escape an island with cannibals.

Dear Nadya,

Your story sounds really fun! When I was little, there was a movie called "Bed Knobs and Broomsticks," and I imagine they are related. This Ms. Price character sounds interesting. You said she's a witch, but then she gives them this cool thing that lets them go on adventures. I usually think of witches as being up to trouble. Why does Ms. Price give the kids the magical bed knob? What are they supposed to accomplish with it?

Let me tell you a little more about the book.The children accidently find out about her being a witch. To keep them from telling and instead of doing it in an evil way she gives them the magical bedknob.If the children tell the knob will lose its magic.They don't have to accomplish anything with it just keep from telling.Witches aren't always up to trouble and Ms.Price is a begginer

Dear Ms.Kimbal,
Niki is the new girl and she starts out kind of lonely at her new school. But she make some friends and all of her friends want her to go to a Halloween party. And in addition to that her little sister wants her to go to her ballerina Halloween bash but Nikki can only attend one so she decided to split her time between all of her friends. But her friends Chloe, Zoe and Brandon find out anyway but they're great friend so they support her in anyway. After the party she feel so bad that she let down her friends but her friends are great supports and they help her and forgive her apologies. And that's what friends are all about.

Dear Class,

I am reading Mr. Terupt Falls Again by Rob Buyea. This is the sequel to Because of Mr. Terupt, which I read earlier this year. This book is about Mr. Terupt and his students. This story is directed from some of the students point of view. So far, Alexia has gotten in way over her head with some high school girls, Peter has experimented and failed at trying to carry forty books at once, and Jeffery has saved an abandoned baby. Also, Danielle is curious to know what her family is hiding from her, Jessica has beaten her teacher in a class competition, Anna has helped Mr. Terupt move to their new 6th grade classroom, and Luke has become a detective. Over all, I'm really enjoying this sequel.

It sounds like Alexia, Jeffrey, Peter, Danielle, and the rest each have a very unique plot line going on separately from the others. How are some of the characters' separate experiences tied together in the story?

Dear Ms. Kimball,

Some of the characters separate experiences do tie together. For instance, Anna and Mr. Terupt helps Lexie with the issues that she's having with the older girls I mentioned earlier, and Jeffery saving the baby brings him and Anna closer together. Also, all of the kids and Mr. Terupt go to the annual Snow Hill Carnival and start their own annual contest. Although it was there that another crisis happened.

Dear Katie and Class,
The Mr. Terupt series are some of the best books ever! The books are Because of Mr. Terupt, Mr. Terupt Falls Again, and Saving Mr. Terupt, and I've read them all. I think we only have Because of Mr. Terupt, but the library ( school and town) have the other two. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS SERIES!!!

Dear class,

I'm reading a book called Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. In this book Harry Potter is being followed by a killer, his name is Sirius Black. Even all the muggles( Also Known As non-magic people) know that Sirius Black is a killer on the lose. Even at Hogwarts Harry is constantly followed by professors and his two friends Ron and Hermione, to keep him safe. Will Harry be able to hide from Sirius Black? Or have to face the consequences of being found.

Dear Ms. Kimball,
J.k Rowling gives me details like in the text it says" Black is deranged, Molly, and he wants Harry dead." or "...., the magical community lives in fear of massacre like that of the twelve years ago. When Black murdered thirteen people with one curse." These details are only in the first part of the book. One way they describe him is"...a sunken-faced man with long, mattered hair blinked at Harry." These are the details from the book that keep me terrified of Sirius Black.

Hi Class,
I am reading the book On The Run by Tristan Bancks. It is about a boy named Ben, his sister and his parents. One day, the police come knocking on Ben's door, asking for his parents. Then, right after the police leave, his parents rush Ben and his sister, Olive, into the car. They drive up to Ben's grandfather's cabin in the woods. The next day Ben finds LOADS and LOADS of money hidden in the roof of the cabin. That all I've read, but based on the inside flap, Ben finds out his parents committed a crime. The police almost catch them, and Ben and Olive are forced to split up with his parents, together and alone in the wild.

Dear Ms. Kimball,

Yes! I read more last night and Ben's parents force him and Olive to leave the cabin to find an offshore bank account. Before that happens, Ben reads an article that basically says, Bank error in your favor. Seven point three million dollars got transported into Ray and Alice Silver's ( Ben's mom and dad) bank account. Then, the Silvers transported the money to an offshore account.
And that's all I have read so far.

Dear Class,
Hi! I am reading a book called The Menagerie by Tui and Kari Sutherland. It starts with a boy named Logan who finds a Griffin cub under his bed. The Griffin lives in a place called the Menagerie, which is top secret and is run by a girl in his class. If an agency that works to help mystic creatures finds out that the Griffin and his siblings escaped, then the Menagerie gets shut down. It is among my favorite books and I highly recommend it!

I love the word "menagerie." It has two somewhat interesting definitions that I imagine relate to the story. (If you don't know what a menagerie is, look it up!)

I might need some more detail about the characters and the setting in order to figure out what exactly The Menagerie is about. Why is the Menagerie top secret? You said that it is run by a girl in Logan's class. Who is she? How does Logan know she is running this agency if it is supposed to be top secret? And where is this agency in the overall setting of the story?

The answers to these questions will help me understand the story a bit better.

Dear Ms. Kimball,
Thanks for the questions! The Menagerie is top secret because if people found out that magic existed, they may use it for their own gain. The girl's name is Zoe Kahn, and her best friend is a mermaid (well, only sort of; what do you call a male mermaid?) And Logan found out the Menagerie existed because the Griffin he found said, "I escaped the Menagerie! Yay for me! Would you like to see it?" Logan said yes and found Zoe there. And the book takes place in a made-up town called Xanadu, Wyoming.

Dear Class,
I am reading a book called Hatchet by Gary Paulsen. This book is about a 13 year old kid named Brian going to visit his dad in Canada. But Brian's plane crashes and Brian is stuck in the Canadian wilderness. The only things he has are a ripped windbreaker and a hatchet his mom gave him as a present. I recommend this book to someone that love action.

Dear Class,
I've just started reading a new book called Out of my Mind. This book is by Sharon M. Draper. So far in this book the main character Melody is almost eleven, and she has a disease called cerebral palsy. This means Melody can't walk, can't control her own body movements, and by far the most frustrating for Melody is she can't talk. She goes to school and learns in a classroom for kids with disabilities. Melody is so sick of everything they teach them, because it's the same material year after year after year. Melody is probably the smartest kid in the school, but because of her disability no body knows! As you can see life is very, very frustrating to Melody. This so far is a really great book.

Thanks! I've now finished the book and one of the characters I think that that recognizes her for her abilities is her neighbor Ms. Valencia, she always encourages Melody to learn and grow. Also, most characters especially her teachers and classmates don't have much hope for Melody and never believed Melody was smart at all. They were suprised by Melody's intelligence when Melody entered in a Whiz Kids competition at her school and made the team. Sadly the team and teacher "forgot" about her when they took a trip for the competition, they left Melody behind!

I am reading a book called Kid Owner by Tim Green.The book is about a kid named Ryan and he never got to meet his father and he was an only child with his mom.His friends are Jack and Kyle and he goes to his father's will and finds out he owns the Dallas cowboys, and he joins a highschool football team because he want to learn more about football.
I recommend this book to any one who likes a combo of fiction and sports.

Kid Owner sounds like an interesting book. I'm guessing that Ryan's father passed away when he was very young. You wrote that Ryan "finds out he owns the Dallas cowboys, and he joins a highschool football team because he want to learn more about football." Does Ryan now own the Dallas Cowboys? What kinds of problems does Ryan face now that he is a "kid owner"?

I read your comment. Yes, Ryan's father did pass away and he owns the Dallas Cowboys. He does have to try to keep the team from his "evil" step brother and try to find help from his fellow football player and he has to make "the play of his life to keep the team".I have a few chapters left to go!

I am reading I am Malala by Patricia Mccormick. So far it is about Malala and how she is luckey to go to school. But there is a bad group called mufi's that believe that women don't have the rights that women have here. Right I like were the book is going with it.I would recommend this book to people who believe in women's rights and equal rights.

Dear Class,
Im reading a book called Pax by Sara Pennypacker. This book is from two point of view, Peters and Paxs. Pax is a fox who has been with Peter since he was a kit. This os a story about how Peter travels over 300 miles to get his fox back, but on the way he runs into some troubles. He sprains his ankle and gets taken in by a woman named Vola who takes care of him for a while. Pax on the other hand is trying to get used to living in the wilderness since he has always been taken care of by Peter. He meets some other foxses and starts traveling with them. Will they get back together? you will just have to read the book to find out! I recomend this book to anyone who likes happy endings

Some of the lessons Pax learns to survive in the wild is he learns how to hunt, he learns how to take care of himself, and he learned about territorys. The author makes Pax come to life by having Pax sound likes hes a human when he talks with a little bit of animal twists. I definatley think you should red this book. I loved it.

Dear Class,

I am reading a book called Who Was Doctor Seuss/ Theodore Geisel. You probably guessed it is a biography about Dr. Seuss, and if you did you are correct. Any way what has happened so far in my book is Dr. Seuss goes to Dartmouth College and dreams to work at the college's humor magazine called Jack-O-Lantern. When Theodore throws a party and shares alcohol he got arrested because Prohibition, and was not allowed to write for Jack-O-Lantern. But he found a way around that, instead of signing his name Theodore Geisel he signed with fake names. Eventually Theodore started to get bad grades, and his father thought he might not get a job. But Theodore told his dad he is going to Oxford. But he really just applied to Oxford. So his dad to pay for it. while he was in Oxford he met a woman named Helen Palmer. While he was in college he preposed to Helen, and so Helen stayed in school to get her degree, and Theodore dropped out. a few years later Theodore got a job in a magazine. and his article was called Boids And Beasties. Where he could let his crazy creatures become published. then Theodore could finally pay for him and helens wedding. Later on Theodore got hired to do Flit adds, and got loads of money which was helpful during the Great Depression. Eventually Theodore moved into a apartment in New York, which the phone number was one digit different form a fish store, and sometimes people would buy fish, but get a drawing. A little while later the editor for Vikings Books asked theodore to illustrate a children book. The book got so popular that Viking Books had him do a sequel. Thats how far I have gotten into my book, for now and I suggest you read it.

Wow! You sure learned a lot about Dr. Suess. I didn't know all of those details about him. I like the part about how he had a phone number that was almost the same as the number of a fish store. That might explain why he draws so many fish in his stories!

What is something that you admire about Theodore Geisel now that you have learned more about who he was as a person?

Also, I know you love to draw comics. Does the work of Dr. Suess inspire you in any way?

Dear Ms. Kimball,

Something I admire about Theodore Geisel is that he is persistent, and never gave up when people rejected his books. To me that would be pretty hard, and I probably would have given up, that takes hard work.

Something that inspires me about Theodore Geisel is his fun drawings, because they are so creative, I probably couldn't do the kinds of drawings he did, or it would be really hard.

I am reading a book that is called warp speed by Lisa Yee. It is about a kid who feels invisible because he is not called on and has no friends, but the only people who seem to see him are the bully's who pick on him. He tries to run away from them and does. It is a good book and very funny.

Based on your short summary, Warp Speed sounds rather sad instead of funny. The main character "feels invisible," "has no friends," and gets picked on by bullies. How does the author turn these sad circumstances into something funny? Who is this main character and what is his personality like?

the end he gets friends and is not "invisible" anymore,

I am reading the first Harry Potter book it is a very good book and here it goes. So it starts as a family known as the Dursleys, and they are not very nice to Harry actually not at all nice to him. also he lives in a cabnit under the stairs and his older step brother Dudley hates Harry and at school Dudley bully's Harry. but then he goes to get the mail and he finds a letter to him to he picks it up and Dudley tells dad and he snatches the letter from Harry and looks at it and it says on the front to Mr.H Potter address the cabinet under the stairs which is super funny.Then the dad shreds it up but the next day more letters and more. Until the dad has had enough and they go to a hotel but then the a worker brings in a hundred letters. So then they go to a shed on a rock in the sea and then theres a knock and a giant walks in and tells the Dursleys that harry is a wizard which is a big surprise so they go to town and get him all set up and thats it so far.

You retold the story in a very amusing way! It had a bit more detail than necessary for a summary. It was more of a retelling, but I still enjoyed reading it.

You wrote, "so they go to town and get him all set up." Who is the "they" that you are referring to? You mentioned how awful the Dursleys are to Harry. Does he get away from them? What is life like now that he knows he's a wizard?

Dear Class,

I am reading "Geronimo Stilton and The Journey Through Time." It is a really funny book about a mouse that ends up going through time. He goes to three time periods, first the Jurassic period,then Ancient Egypt, and finally to King Arthur in the Medieval Time. If you like funny books read this book and at the end, he learns an important lesson.

How does the author make this adventure humorous? Also, you said Geronimo "learns an important lesson." What does he learn?

Geronimo has a cool and funny adventure because. There is all these little details that just make me crack up, like this one. "There he goes fainting again." And you asked about the important lesson at the end. The lesson is, that know matter what time period you are in. The most important thing is that being with your family, can never be better. No matter what time period you are in.

Dear Ms Kimball, I am reading, or rather have read, an amazing book called The Last Wild. It is about a boy named Kester who cannot talk to humans but later realizes that he can talk to animals. Meanwhile, almost all the animals on Earth have been wiped out by a dreaded disease called the red eye. Also, an evil food company called Facto has taken over the world, which at that point in time is now a huge island in the middle of the ocean that has flooded the rest of the world. And now Facto is making artificial food for the people. But really all the Facto company wants is power. Now Kester, the remaining animals on earth, and a girl named Polly have to stop Facto and save the world. This book sets a dark and dreary yet adventurous mood.

Wow! Great summary of The Last Wild! I'm very intrigued by the post-apocalyptic setting. Facto sounds like a very nefarious organization. Are there any characters in the story from the food company? How does Kester, the animals, and Polly hope to stop Facto from getting more power?
