Ms. Kimball's Grade 5 At Pine Hill, 2017-2018
A truly fantastic group of kids! You guys had "the goods" --great leadership, enthusiasm, energy, humor, personality, talent, kindness, and so much more. I was so sad to have to leave you for maternity leave through the rest of the school year. In the 4 months I was with you, you proved to be a top-notch class! Adie, Alex, Anthony, Amari, Ava, Brayden, David, Finley, Hazel, Gabe, Jack, Lilah, Luca, Mia, Matthew, Paoli, Sanat, Selina, Silas, and Will.
Classroom Action
Writing PresentationStudents read excerpts from their personal narratives during our writers' cafe presentation. We set the mood with colored lighting, a fancy backdrop, and trendy transition music.
Graphing ProjectAfter designing and conducting an experiment to test which variables impacted water evaporation, students graphed their data so they could analyze it and compare it with other groups.
|
Hands-On Math ProjectTo understand the size of cubic units, students worked in teams to create life-size models of a cubic inch, cubic foot, and cubic yard using chart paper and tape. This helped to make the concept of volume come to life.
Science ExperimentGroups of students gathered materials and created models of earth, complete with heat lamps to represent the sun. In another project, they tested different filtration materials in home-made water filters.

Reading Response Blog
|
Read through our class Reading Response Blog where students analyzed their independent reading each week (from Sept-Dec). I posted a prompt once a month, and students responded to the prompt, then commented on one another's response, then wrote back to their comments. It was amazing to read their insights about their own reading, and then, in turn, their responses to one another's questions and feedback!
