Hi Families, We had a great week of learning and a very fun field trip this week. The Discovery Museum had many fascinating exhibits. Students especially loved the water play area and the air tubes. We also had a special guest visit from a software engineer (Emma’s dad), who taught us how to program a computer to play Tic Tac Toe. Students were very engaged! Our class Winter Party will be on Thursday, December 22 from 1:20-2:30. If you are interested in leading an activity with students (a craft, game, read aloud, or activity, please sign up on our Winter Party Sign Up Sheet. Thank you! Community Building We had conversations this week about how to solve problems with friends, emphasizing the importance of “using your words” to say how you feel and listening to the other person patiently. We also discussed treating others kindly and gently, especially this time of year. Everyone carries an “invisible backpack” of experiences and challenges, many of them adverse, that we don’t know about and we need to be kind and gentle to our peers and each other. Literacy This week we continued learning about immigration and read stories that help us understand the immigrant experience. In our literacy skills work, we practiced working with sentences, finding verbs, and unscrambling words to make sentences. We also applied our phonics knowledge of suffixes. Writing In Writing this week, we worked on writing an informational text about libraries, answering the questions: What is a Library? What do you do at a library? And How does a library help the community? Students either wrote a short essay or completed a more structured writing assignment. Some students are making posters to accompany their writing. Phonics In Phonics we reviewed suffixes -s, -es, -ed, -ing, -er, and -est and took our Unit 4 test. We kicked off the next unit on multisyllabic words and new suffixes.
Math In Math we continued working on 2-digit addition and subtraction using models and equations. We tackled story problems and learned how to break them apart into meaningful chunks and align them with a visual model. Here are the Family Support Materials for this Math unit. Social Studies We began our World Tour for our study of geography, learning about the seven continents and five oceans. We will be exploring each continent and learning about its main features. Thank you for reading! Please reach out with any questions or feedback. Have a great week! Check out some photos below from our field trip to the Discovery Museum!
