Hi Families, What are you feeding your kids each morning?? They have been FANTASTIC this week! I am totally feeling a synergy in the room. Students have been so responsive, attentive, hard working, and cooperative this week –even on Thursday for the substitute! She wrote, “Dear Mrs. Kimball, your class was excellent today! Respectful, well-behaved, good listeners, and hard workers. We had a great day!” Now that is music to my ears! Thank you to those of you who donated tissues and disinfectant wipes! We should be good for a while now! Barrows Weekly Newsletter Here is the link to the latest Starburst from Principal Gallegos. Friendly reminder from Ms. Atwood, our P.E. teacher: Don't forget to bring your sneakers on Mondays and Tuesdays! Important Upcoming Dates:
Play Day: Our class will have a day of Free Play Time on Wednesday! As part of the Global School Play Day, our classroom will have a day of unstructured play time all day, including an afternoon playdate with our buddy class. Students can bring in TOYS without batteries to play with. The goal is to encourage kids to engage with each other by playing. Play is not just fun; it is an important activity that develops children's problem-solving skills, creativity, independence, social skills, and much more. I will be as hands-off as possible to allow students the freedom to play, so long as they are safe. Students may bring in toys: board games, card games, dolls, action figures, dress up, building materials (like Legos or Magna-tiles), jewelry-making, crafts, etc. No electronics. Please let me know if you have any questions about what your child may bring in to play with. It will be a TON of FUN! I also included a picture of our Immigration vocabulary chart that we have regularly referred to throughout the unit. Community Building
Students have been doing a nice job of showing respect and kindness to one another. I see this in the way the play during indoor recess; in the way they talk about one another’s thinking during math; in the way they turn and talk to a partner during our literary discussions on immigration; and in the way they help each other when someone is confused or stuck. As I said above, there is a great synergy developing within our class community. Literacy Early this week we took a quiz to assess our understanding and knowledge of early immigration to the US. This week we explored how immigrants have contributed and continue to contribute to our country today through a read aloud and discussion. Students got a treat on Thursday –the substitute read aloud the lovely story about the origins of Winnie the Pooh, called Finding Winnie: The True Story of the World’s Most Famous Bear. Plus, students got to watch another Winnie the Pooh movie, seeing the characters they’ve come to love from the book come to life in all of their charm and absurdity. We’ll be finishing the Winnie the Pooh chapter book next week. Writing To apply our knowledge of immigration, we pretended we were immigrants to the US between 1860-11920 and drafted letters back home describing our experience. Students completed planners and pulled details from those planners into a letter writing template. We learned about the parts of a letter and why they are important. Students also worked on publishing their informational writing pieces. Most still need more time, but hopefully they will finish early next week. Phonics We took our Unit 6 Phonics Test this week which assessed students’ understanding of vowel-consonant-e syllables and multisyllabic words. Next week we will study open syllables. They end in a vowel and the vowel has a long sound. We’ll learn about “y” as a vowel in open syllables and the two sounds it can make: long i as is “cry” and long e as in “baby.”
Math We wrapped up our study of line plots this week. Next week we take a day to review concepts and then take our Unit 3 Math Assessment, which asks students to apply their understanding of measurement units, measure and compare lengths, add data to a line plot, and solve multi-step addition and subtraction story problems. We will move into Unit 4 later next week, which is about Addition and Subtraction on a Number Line.
Social Studies switching to Science We explored South America this week, learning a little about the continent’s geography and features. We’ll take a break from our world tour to focus on Science for the next month. In Science next week, we begin exploring the properties of matter. We will explore states of matter and materials, and learn about various properties, such as texture, flexibility, hardness, and absorbency. Thank you for reading! Please reach out with any questions or feedback. Have a great week!
