Weekly Update 2/17

Hi Families,
Happy February Break! Students did a great job working hard, helping each other, and keeping the good vibes flowing all week! I hope everyone enjoys their time off from school. Students certainly earned some relaxation and fun.

We had a blast at our Valentine’s Day Party! Thank you parent volunteers for making it such a hit. We played BINGO, made crafts, scratched drawings using scratch paper and special materials (a little science connection there), and wrapped classmates up with Valentine’s-Day-themed decorations. It was super fun! Check out pictures below.

Community Building
We changed table groups on Friday and students named their new groups. We also played some fun class games during morning meetings: Silent Ball, Coseeki, and more! Students are doing a great job being encouraging, fair, and kind.

Literacy 
Our literacy work this week consisted of:

• A read aloud story about The Great Migration of African Americans from the south to the north to cap off our study of immigration and migration;
• Reading about adjectives and multisyllabic phrases;
• Learning more about how the brain reads;
• Making inferences throughout a read aloud, “Camp Tiger.”

Writing
This week we: 

• Wrote silly stories using adjective and multisyllabic phrases;
• Wrote a short literary essay describing a character we liked from Winnie the Pooh.

Phonics
Our phonics work this week focused on:

• Prefixes that are open syllables (pre-, de-, re-, and pro-) and their meanings;
• Using suffixes -y, -ly, and -ty and how they change words from/to nouns, adjectives, verbs, and/or adverbs;
• A progress check of our phonics skills.

Math
We continue in Unit 4 on Addition and Subtraction on a Number Line. We learned how to:

• Model addition and subtraction on a number line;
• Write equations based on number line representations and represent given equations on number lines;
• Represent subtraction methods on a number line and compare how each representation shows the difference.

Science
In Science, we learned about properties of matter such as color, flexibility, hardness, texture, and absorbency. We explored various materials, grouped them based on their properties, and described their properties using precise adjectives.
