Hello Families, I hope you had a great week! We were busy and productive in school this week, taking 2 assessments, reading books to each other, investigating 2 of Earth's natural forces, using elaborating strategies in our writing, and pushing our brains to solve complicated math problems. Students are doing a great job following routines and expectations that promote learning! Fall Conferences are coming up on November 16, 17, and 18. Here is a sign-up sheet to select a conference time for us to discuss your child's progress in so far in 2nd grade: Ms. Kimball's Class Fall Conference Sign Up Important Dates this Week:
Weekly Barrows Newsletter Here is the link to the latest Starburst from Principal Gallegos loaded with useful school-wide info and updates. Above, students learn about weathering and erosion with an informative video about Arches National Park; students sing in the All School Assembly; and students share about their fantastic broom engineering designs. Here are some more highlights from the week: Community Building This week we mingled with the other 2nd grade classes and designed fancy brooms for the witch from the story, Room on the Broom by Julia Donaldson. Students had a blast designing over-the-top features, like trampolines, candy grabbers, bathtubs, pet beds, and much more. We also had a school-wide assemble to celebrate UN day. It was amazing to see and hear all of the students in every grade sing one song in different languages. Great work by our Music teacher, Ms. Raucci! Literacy We compared and contrasted two stories about overcoming fears of taking a big jump -Jabari Jumps by Gaia Cornwall and Cannonball by Sacha Cotter. Students also read in books groups this week to practice either decoding or fluency. They read out loud with a partner to practice their fluency. Writing I demonstrated how to "orient the reader" at the beginning of a story by answering at least 3 questions, such as "When?" "Where?" and "Why?" Student volunteers shared their work and I modeled how to expand a sentence to include those answers. Next week, we'll be moving on to work at the sentence level. We'll analyze the parts of a sentence, acting as detectives who try to figure out if a group of words is a sentence or not. Phonics We took our Unit 2 Phonics test on Friday, which covered spelling with bonus letters, glued sounds, and consolidating our review of 1st grade phonics. Next week I will send the tests home along with the math assessments and some recent work (once I have a chance to grade it). If your child is struggling with reading and writing, then practicing phonics at home in a one-on-one setting, could help a lot. Here are the Home Support Packets from the Fundations program for the units we've covered so far, plus the next one, Unit 3.
Math We wrapped up our first unit of Math covering the basics of adding, subtracting, and working with data. Students took the first assessment on Thursday. Once I grade it, I will send it home with the Phonics test. Next week we will begin the next unit, Adding and Subtracting within 100. Here are the Family Support Materials for Unit 2 as well as Unit 1 if you would like to review (I just found it in our online resources for the curriculum!) Science We debriefed last week's experiment and learned about two powerful natural forces that change our landscape: wind and water. We watched videos and read books about Erosion and Weathering. Next week we will learn about engineers and how they design solutions to problems using science. We'll try to design solutions to prevent weathering and erosion, and look at some real-world examples. Any scientists or engineers in our parent community interested in a classroom visit to share about your field? Please let me know! Above, a few pictures of students acting out weathering and erosion on each other; another All School Assembly picture; and students taking their math assessments in privacy folders.
Special Message for Veterans: Is a member of your family a Veteran? Help Barrows honor those that served for our country. Two options - We are inviting Veterans to be part of our assembly on Wednesday November 9th at 8:30 OR you can send us a photo and information and it will be included in the assembly. Either way please email [email protected] to register your Veteran in order to be recognized at the assembly. Please do this no later than Monday November 7th. You will need to share the following information:
Thank you for reading! Please reach out with any questions or feedback. Have a great week!
