Hi Families, Although the excitement is building for the holidays and the winter break, we still accomplished a lot of great learning this week! Our class Winter Party will be this Thursday, December 22 from 1:20-2:30. If you are interested in volunteering at our party, please sign up on our Winter Party Sign Up Sheet. The slots for leading an activity are filled up, but we can still squeeze in another if you would really like to volunteer. Thank you to those who have already signed up to volunteer! The kids will have a blast! A few updates and reminders:

Community Building We had some fun rounds of 4 Corners, Coseeki, and Alibi at our Morning Meetings this week. Our class conversations this week covered how we treat each other, especially this time of year. First, I ranted to students about being “kind and gentle” to one another. Second, I explained how to “build goodwill” with peers and teachers by doing and saying small, kind things without expecting anything in return. Next week we’ll practice singing “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer” and do a craft with our fourth grade buddy class for our school sing-along. Literacy This week we read Island Born by Junot Diaz and had some deep, analytical discussions involving abstract representations of political strife –yes, in 2nd grade! Students were very intrigued by the mysterious, unnamed “monster” that terrorized the island on which the author was born, so I did a little research and shared the fascinating story with students. They learned a little about the history of the Dominican Republic. Next week we’ll read some winter and holiday related stories, including books about Kwanza, Hanukkah, and Christmas. Writing In Writing this week, students wrapped up their informational writing on Libraries. Students will next be writing an informational text about a topic of their choosing. Here are some student topics: lions, hockey, piano, dragons, rocks and minerals, pigs, being funny, and much more! We read some informational text examples and started listing facts we know and questions we have. Phonics In Phonics we launched Unit 5 on multisyllabic words and new suffixes. Students are learning how to divide words into syllables, which will help them read and spell big words. We played a fun team game where students matched syllables to make multisyllabic words. We took a phonics Progress Check, which I will send home next week. Next week we’ll add more suffixes to our arsenal and begin learning some of their meanings: -ful, -less, -ment, -ness, -en, -ly, and -able.
Math In Math we took our Unit 2 assessment on adding and subtraction 2-digit numbers. I’ll grade them early this week and send them home mid-week with the phonics Progress Check for your review. Next week we’ll begin Unit 3 on Measuring Length, beginning with the metric system –centimeters and meters. Here are the Family Support Materials for this unit: Social Studies We learned about features of North America this week, watching videos and labeling maps. Students should be able to located the Atlantic Ocean, the Pacific Ocean, USA, Canada, Mexico, the Rocky Mountains, the Appalachian Mountains, and the Great Lakes. Next week we will wrap up our tour of North America. Thank you for reading! Please reach out with any questions or feedback. Happy Holidays!!
