Hi Families, Happy Martin Luther King Jr. Day! For those who have the day off, I hope you’re enjoying the long weekend. I hope students are getting some outdoor time playing in the snow! My apologies for the late Weekly Update –I had some family matters this weekend that kept me busy. Barrows Weekly Newsletter Here is the link to the latest Starburst from Principal Gallegos. There are a couple of requests that Ms. Gallegos is making school-wide:
Thank you for your help! Below, students using inch tiles to measure lengths in math. Community Building
We continue to work on staying safe and respectful when the weather and muddy school grounds prevent us from going outside for recess. I’ll be working on some tactics to help students expel excess energy when they are trapped indoors all day. Students continue to enjoy their comfy chair privileges. We’ll be changing desk groups this week, so students will get a new day of the week to sit on the comfy chairs. Literacy Last week we learned a little bit about Irish and Italian immigrants and some of the push and pull factors that caused them to move to the United States (for example, the potato blight in Ireland). We also took a little break from immigration and learned about the legendary baseball player, Babe Ruth. Students practiced their reading fluency with an informational text about The Babe. Writing In Writing last week students practiced writing different types of sentences: statement, question, exclamation, and command. Students wrote sentences about immigration to show our understanding of the topic, and then tried to vary their sentence structure in their own writing on an informational topic of their choice. Students also wrote short narratives using multisyllabic, unrelated phrases and had to tie them all together in a story. The different ideas students had for how to do that were hilarious! Phonics In Phonics last week we FINALLY studied the all-important vowel-consonant-e syllable, often referenced using the phrase "magic e" or "silent e." This opens up so much of our English code in reading and spelling. This week we will build multisyllabic words that contain vowel-consonant-e syllables.
Math In Math we learned about feet and inches and measured objects around the room using inch-tiles and rulers. We also reviewed adding and subtracting with two-digit numbers using a variety of strategies based on place-value. This week we will learn to use measuring tape and solve one- and two-step story problems using representations. Then we’ll learn about line plots. I am in the middle of administering district-mandated math assessments on number sense, and those will continue this week as well.
Social Studies Last week we learned more about the countries in Europe and then moved to Asia, studying its geographical features. We’ll hopefully speed up our world tour of continents and oceans this week so we can switch to Science next week. Thank you for reading! Please reach out with any questions or feedback. Have a great week!
