Hi Families, We had an amazing experience at Project Adventure this week. The kids showed perseverance, collaboration, and cooperation. Be sure to ask your child about our trip if you haven’t heard from them already. Parent Teacher Conferences are next week! Here is the link to the sign up document if you need to check or change your time: Ms. Kimball’s Fall Conference Schedule. I am looking forward to meeting with you! Barrows Student Council is hosting a food drive! Beginning on November 12- November 20, students are welcome to bring in an item from the Reading Food Pantry’s donation list. Students may also choose to donate a dollar by filling out a thankful turkey feather and enter a raffle to be the Turkey Trot Grand Marshall.
Here is what we’ve been up to this week: Math Unit 3: Multiplying and Dividing Fractions We analyzed our End-of-Unit Assessment on Fractions as Quotients and Fraction Multiplication. I sent the assessments home in students’ Home/School Folders. Please review your child’s work. If you have any questions about my notes or corrections, please reach out. I took notes on how you child did and am providing those who were challenged by this assessment more structure, support, and explicit practice during our math block. We started our third math unit, focusing this week on area models for multiplication of unit fractions. Students wrote expressions and drew diagrams to represent situations where, for example, someone eats ⅓ of ½ a pan of mac and cheese (that is the same as ⅓ x ½ , and would equal ⅙ of the entire pan).
English Language Arts Unit 2: Ecosystems: Matter, Energy, and Organisms. We wrapped up our research on producers in our ecosystems. Students explored both books and digital resources and took notes in a graphic organizer. We launched our Google Classroom and overviewed expectations for writing a page about producers in our ecosystem. Some students began completing a structured multi-paragraph outline using their notes. Next week we will type a short report using the outline.
Science Unit 2: Earth’s Materials We read about the types of tectonic plates, the Ring of Fire, and earthquakes and volcanoes. We used longitude lines and latitude lines to plot the location of documented earthquakes and volcanoes to discover that their location is tied to the fault lines of earth’s tectonic plates. Community Building Project Adventure was our big community building experience this week. We also enjoyed our All School Assembly in honor of Veterans Day. Students learned about the many community members and student and teacher family members who have served our country. It was very moving! We had student council elections this week. Congratulations to Erin and Tommy, our class representatives! Kudos to Anna and Katherine as our gracious runner-ups. It was a close race! We finished the week off with a lovely visit with our buddy class, Ms. Hill’s 2nd grade. We snuggled with our stuffies and had a pleasant outdoor snack together. Homework Here is the usual reminder: Don’t forget to check your child’s reading log in their planner each week, have them total their minutes for the week, and sign your name next to the total by Monday morning. You can stay on top of your child’s homework with my Homework Assignment Log. Important Dates:
Below are some pictures from the week. Since I have SO MANY pictures from Project Adventure, I put them in a shared folder. You can check them out here: Ms. Kimball's Class Project Adventure 2024 Photos Thank you for reading! Have a great weekend!
