Hi Families, What a beautiful Fall week! It was wonderful how summer made one last appearance, giving us gorgeous sunny days and warm weather. We finished Term 1 of our school year. I will be sending a separate email out with my conference sign-up document. I look forward to meeting with you! Here is what we’ve been up to this week: Math Unit 2: Fractions as Quotients and Fraction Multiplication. In this section, students have been learning that they can reason about the area of a rectangle with a fractional side length the same way they had with rectangles with whole-number side lengths: using diagrams and multiplication. Students have been using unit fractions, mixed numbers, and improper fractions to label the side length of a shaded rectangle. They then write a multiplication expression using those fractions, and can solve for the area while seeing the multiplication they are doing representing within the diagram. Please check their Cool Downs when they come home to see the amazing work they have done.
English Language Arts Unit 2: Ecosystems: Matter, Energy, and Organisms. This week we’ve split our time between launching our new unit on Ecosystems and writing a fun narrative based on My Teacher is an Alien. I asked students to rewrite the final scene in My Teacher is an Alien from the perspective of Peter, who willingly runs away with the alien Broxholm into outer space. Students have been eager to imagine what happens to Peter once he leaves Earth. I’ll give students an opportunity to share an excerpt of their writing next week. We kicked off our next ELA unit on Ecosystems. We learned about the difference between biomes, ecosystems, and habitats. Students read about matter and energy, which we will track later in our study of food webs and food pyramids. Students chose their top three ecosystems that they would like to become experts on throughout this unit. We also discussed the 6 syllable types and practiced reading and spelling words from our Ecosystems unit by breaking them into syllables. Lastly, we learned about reading fluency: accuracy, rate, and expression. I modeled fluent reading, teaching students how to pause at punctuation and chuck words into meaningful phrases. Please require the 20 minutes per day of independent reading practice to help your child improve their fluency.
Science Unit 2: Earth’s Materials This week we investigated minerals by conducting tests for properties such as transparency, luster, magnetism, conductivity, hardness, streak, fluorescence, and color. We learned what minerals are and had fun exploring their properties in teams.
Community Building We had a fun All School Assembly this week celebrating the United Nations. The whole school sang a round of Freres Jacques, each grade singing in a different language. Our class also began delivering the morning announcements over the intercom. We also got a special visit from Officer Matt and Rusty, who joined us for a fun Morning Meeting! Homework Don’t forget to check your child’s reading log in their planner each week, have them total their minutes for the week, and sign your name next to the total by Monday morning. You can stay on top of your child’s homework with my Homework Assignment Log. If your child ever forgets their planner and folder at school, I will try to leave it on the table outside of the front door so it can be picked up after school hours (if you want to!) Important Dates:
Thank you for reading! Have a great weekend!
