Hi Families, We wrapped up the month of October in great spirits. I’m looking forward to meeting with you soon for parent teacher conferences! Here is the link to the sign up document if you need to check or change your time: Ms. Kimball’s Fall Conference Schedule Project Adventure Information - November 7 We are excited for our trip to Project Adventure next week! Here are some pieces of information for you to have ahead of time for your student. Kids should plan to dress in layers and wear their Barrows 5th Grade Tshirt. It sounds like the weather on the PA campus is 5-10 degrees cooler than the town of Beverly and can be quite windy. Students must wear sneakers. Crocs, Uggs, and open toed shoes are not allowed.
Here is what we’ve been up to this week: Math Unit 2: Fractions as Quotients and Fraction Multiplication. We wrapped up the unit this week, completing our End-of-Unit Assessment by Friday. We learned how to multiply whole numbers by fractions using models as well as the distributive property. We also learned how to round fractions to 0, ½, or 1 to estimate products efficiently. I will grade assessments as soon as I can and get them home for your review. A flurry of Cool Downs from this unit went home, so please review those.
English Language Arts Unit 2: Ecosystems: Matter, Energy, and Organisms. This week we learned about some key characteristics of ecosystems and about producers. Some of the domain-specific vocabulary words we focused on were: climate, geography, producer, photosynthesis, chlorophyll, and carbon dioxide. Students received their ecosystem assignment for this unit. Each student began researching their ecosystem using our book bins. Students worked to gather information about the producers in their ecosystem (an organism that creates their own food through photosynthesis.) Students identified what producers (mainly plants) need in order to get energy, explored their adaptations, and learned about what they give back to their environment. We have begun to compile this information into a graphic organizer. Students will use this information to plan and write a well-developed paragraph about the producers in their ecosystem.
In language skills, we practiced some spelling rules to help us spell those big vocabulary words from our study of ecosystems. We also learned how to make sense of some complex sentences from our reading about producers by recognizing pronouns that refer to a previous noun or noun phrase. Science Unit 2: Earth’s Materials This week we enjoyed another visit from Science from Scientists. Students explored more engineering strategies for solving design problems (how to move a bookshelf from room to room in a school). We reviewed how properties of a mineral can be used to help identify it. We then began learning about Earth’s tectonic plates and how they relate to earthquakes and volcanoes. Community Building We had a super fun Halloween party on Thursday thanks to our amazing room parent, Heather Wicken (Cole’s mom), and our awesomely helpful volunteers Lori Barcikowski (Kaden’s mom) and Kerry Stakem (Tommy’s mom). Students had so much fun making cute craft monsters and bookmarks, playing a quick game of Halloween bingo, and (best of all) playing ping pong ball toss. It was a very fun team building experience for all. Homework Here is the usual reminder: Don’t forget to check your child’s reading log in their planner each week, have them total their minutes for the week, and sign your name next to the total by Monday morning. You can stay on top of your child’s homework with my Homework Assignment Log. Important Dates:
Check out the fun pictures from indoor recess, research, science, and our party below! Thank you for reading! Have a great weekend!
